Artesunate is derived from the Chinese medicinal herb qinghao. Many animal studies suggest that systemic artesunate has immunoregulatory act … om day 3 to day 1 before challenge (p > 0.05). Artesunate had no effect on toxic (irritant) contact dermatitis from 20% croton oil (p > 0.05). The results indicate that topical application of artesunate may offer a novel treatment of allergic contact dermatitis and other cutaneous immune-mediated disorders.

We have examined 6 construction workers who developed chronic skin diseases on their hands over a period of 15 years (1970-1985). 4 developed a Trichophyton rubrum infection, and the other 2 an irritant contact dermatitis. All of them carried out jobs which caused traumatization of the skin, due to the presence of ethylene glycol and mineral oils during operation of pneumatic hammers in winter. They also suffered other types of skin trauma during their work. Construction workers may be at risk of developing an occupational skin disease involving fungal infection.

BACKGROUND: Platinum is one of the most widely used agents in clinical oncology today. Serious toxic effects are well recognized.
FINDINGS: To our knowledge, the current report describes the first case of severe allergic exfoliative dermatitis associated with ischemia and necrosis of the hands in a patient who had received multiple doses of this agent. We postulate that the tissue damage was caused by vasospasm of small vessels from the initial injury triggered by platinum or its associated immune complexes.

Patients who noticed worsening of their skin disease after using topical corticosteroid preparations were patch tested both with the commercial preparation and the corticosteroid itself. Between 1987 and 1989, 10 cases of contact dermatitis due to topical corticosteroids were detected in this way. Diseases of the skin and visible mucous membranes are important signs of HIV infection. Dermatitis and eczema present mostly as seborrheic dermatitis. Thirty-one % of asymptomatic patients in seropositive latency period and up to 83% of AIDS patients present with this common symptom of HIV infection. Up to now there is no clear answer about the importance of atopic manifestations in AIDS. In children with pediatric AIDS, atopic eczema has been described in up to 50% of cases. In adult patients however there are contradictory results about the frequency of atopic diseases.

Irritant contact dermatitis to sulfite hair preparations most commonly occurs when users do not follow instructions. Allergic eczematous reactions are very rare; immediate urticarial reactions seem to occur principally in patients with asthma. Pretesting should be done in such patients in a physician's office where medication for the treatment of shock or asthma is available.

Cyclosporine (CSA) is an effective immunosuppressive agent and is used in tissue transplantation. The present investigation was undertaken to determine the effect of topical delivery of CSA on allergic contact dermatitis in guinea pigs. Topical 15% CSA in an azone (1-dodecylazacycloheptan-2-one)-containing vehicle blocked local elicitation in previously dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) sensitized animals that received a single topical application just prior to elicitation. Topical cyclosporine applied to the test site substantially inhibited the elicitation reaction of contact sensitivity in the guinea pigs previously sensitized with 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB). This suppressive effect of the drug was short lived and reversible. Cyclosporine was not effective when given six hours or later after antigenic challenge to the test site. Patch testing with 7 irritants has been performed on a panel of 42 healthy volunteers, with the aim of determining concentrations which would induce mild to moderate reactions in at least 75% of individuals tested. An outbreak of dermatitis occurred among employees of a microelectronics firm. In a cross-sectional epidemiologic investigation, we found that dermatitis of the hands or arms had occurred among 14 of 29 (48.3%) employees of the incoming inspection department where plastic tote boxes recently purchased from one manufacturer had been used, compared to only one case among 17 (5.9%) employees in another department which had not used these boxes.
