The most common cause for the persistence of poliomyelitis in developing countries has been the failure of routine immunization programs to provide > or = three doses of poliovirus vaccine to a high proportion of infants. However, a more worrisome pattern of disease can be attributed more to vaccine failure than failure to vaccinate, as illustrated by epidemics in selected African and Asian countries during the 1980s. The efficacy of oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) has been shown in these and other instances to be considerably lower in developing countries than in industrialized countries, indic…

In a number of developing countries, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, infection with both M. tuberculosis and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is highly prevalent. HIV infection results in an impairment of the immune system and entails a substantial risk of TB in those individuals who are or become infected with the tubercle bacillus. Because persons with both infections have an increased risk of developing clinical TB and further transmitting M. tuberculosis infection, some of these countries are facing, or will have to face, a rapid upsurge of the TB problem. The interaction between HIV…

While the UK was declared free from rabies over 100 years ago, the disease remains a significant cause of death in many other countries around the world. It is hoped that eradication programmes in affected countries will succeed in the long term but, until then, prompt and thorough treatment can prevent people who have potentially been in contact with the rabies virus from developing this infection. This article provides a review of the disease and its prevention.

Escherichia coli O157:H7 is frequently isolated from cases of diarrhea in many industrialized countries; however, it is seldom found in developing countries. The present manuscript reports the presence of E. coli O157:H7 in Ecuadorian livestock, a country where enterohemorrhagic E. coli disease in humans has never been reported. The Ecuadorian isolates were genetically related to some strains linked to clinical cases in the United States as assessed by multiple-locus variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) analysis.

Chemical leukoderma denotes an acquired hypopigmentation caused by repeated exposure to specific chemical compounds simulating clinically idiopathic vitiligo. The ailment has been increasing in developing countries like India in recent years. Etiologically, a lot of chemicals, especially phenolic group, have been identified in various countries including India. The term, "chemical leukoderma syndrome" has been described to encompass all the various manifestations of chemical leukoderma. Clinical diagnostic criteria have been proposed to diagnose chemical leukoderma clinically more confidently.

The Safe Motherhood Initiative has successfully stimulated much interest in reducing maternal mortality. To accelerate programme implementation, this paper reviews lessons learned from the experience of industrial countries and from demonstration projects in developing countries, and proposes intervention strategies of policy dialogue, improved services and behavioural change. A typological approach with three hypothetical settings from resource poor to resource rich environments is used to address the variability in health behaviours and infrastructure encountered when programming for safe mo…

Chancroid is the most prevalent form of genital ulcer disease in developing countries and is undergoing a resurgence in industrialized countries. As a result of a nonspecificity of the clinical findings, the etiologic diagnosis of genital ulcer disease requires laboratory support. Genital ulcer disease is a risk factor for the transmission of human retroviral infections. An understanding of this interaction is emerging and will impact on the treatment and control programs for the agents causing genital ulcer disease.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the current status of initiatives carried out in developing countries to improve therapeutic management of people with epilepsy.
METHODS: A literature review was performed in 2015 to identify and analyze interventional programs carried out in countries with low- and middle-income economies. Electronic databases were reviewed with no time restriction. Each intervention was categorized according to the level of evidence achieved (A: blind randomized controlled trial, B: randomized controlled trial, C1: randomized trial, C2: controlled trial, D: prospective cohort, E: retros…

Climate change creates hostile living conditions in various regions, provoking climate-driven migration. The literature points to a polarization between the countries responsible for climate change and the regions suffering its consequences. Given this dichotomy, this study analyses the link between unsustainable consumption by world powers and the increasing vulnerability of some developing countries. We identify the most vulnerable countries to climate migrations and perform a responsibility assessment on environmental migration through historical consumption-based contributions to climate c…

Cancer and malaria exemplify two maladies historically assigned to separated research spaces. Cancer, on the one hand, ranks among the top priorities in the research agenda of developed countries. Its rise is mostly explained by the ageing of these populations and linked to environment and lifestyle. Malaria, on the other hand, represents a major health burden for developing countries in the Southern Hemisphere. These two diseases also belong to separate fields of medicine: non-communicable diseases for cancer and communicable diseases for malaria.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal diabetes mellitus (NDM) is a monogenic form of diabetes mellitus. Until now, patients in developing countries who had this condition had been misdiagnosed as having type 1 diabetes mellitus and accordingly directed to erroneous, ineffective, and costly therapeutic regimens.
OBJECTIVE: To detect Egyptian patients who harbor pathological variant in the KCNJ11 gene, so that their treatment regimen can be modified as needed to increase its effectiveness.
METHODS: We sequenced KCNJ11 in 17 ethnic Egyptian probands diagnosed with diabetes mellitus before age 2 years.
