BACKGROUND: Whether minimally invasive plating osteosynthesis (MIPO) or other operative interventions is superior in the treatment of humeral shaft fractures remains controversial. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to quantitatively compare the clinical outcomes of MIPO and other operative interventions in the treatment of humeral shaft fractures.
METHODS: Pubmed, Embase, and Web of Science were systematically searched to identify all available studies comparing clinical outcomes between patients receiving MIPO and other operative interventions. The weight mean difference (WMD) was pool

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the coronoid process or the supinator crest, as well as arthroscopic resection of osteophytes around the coronoid process, can endanger the attachment of the annular ligament (AL) to the proximal ulna. The purpose of this study was to investigate the corresponding insertional areas of the AL within this context.
METHODS: In 30 embalmed human cadaveric elbow specimens, the insertional area of the AL at the anterior and posterior margin of the sigmoid notch was characterized. The distances and relations of the AL insertion anteriorly to the coronoid surface, the coronoi

Patients with poststroke complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) show different symptoms compared to other types of CRPS, as they usually complain of shoulder and wrist pain with the elbow relatively spared. It is thus also known by the term "shoulder-hand syndrome."The aim of this study is to present a possible pathophysiology of poststroke CRPS through ultrasonographic observation of the affected wrist before and after steroid injection at the extensor digitorum communis (EDC) tendon in patients suspected with poststroke CRPS.Prospective evaluation and observation, the STROBE guideline checkli

The use of awkward wrist postures and unskilled techniques might induce lateral epicondylitis. This study thus investigated the effects of wrist deviation combined with extension and movement velocity on the dynamic performances of the wrist muscles during the coupling posture via a custom-made bi-planar isokinetic dynamometer. Thirty subjects were recruited to perform the isokinetic testing. We measured the muscle strengths and activities for the wrist extensors and flexors during concentric and eccentric contractions at three movement velocities, 30°s(-1), 90°s(-1), and 180°s(-1), combined w

Pathological snapping secondary to posttraumatic subluxation of the extensor tendon at proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ) of the finger is rare. Here, we want to describe a patient with snapping of the left small finger at PIPJ due to retinacular ligament injury. A 24-year-old man was admitted because of a 5-year history of a snapping sound in the left small finger. On examination, the radial side lateral band of the small finger was dislocated volarly at the level PIPJ with flexion of >50°, which was clearly felt over the skin. There was an obvious snapping sound at the time of dislocation

BACKGROUND: Joint structure damages due to overstrain often occur even in commonly not injury-prone golfing. Triggered by the golf swing's repetitive movement pattern and technique deficits of the player these structural damages are most likely to affect the lumbar spine as well as shoulder and elbow joint. As a synonym for shoulder impingement symptoms in golfers the term golf shoulder has been established in medical terminology. Despite this fact, currently there exist no studies addressing the relation between shoulder impingement syndrome and club head velocity.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this

Development of osteomyelitis in a closed fracture is rare. Although it has been reported that trivial trauma may be associated with the subsequent development of acute osteomyelitis, no evidence has been found that fractures are involved in the etiology of osteomyelitis. Only 25 cases (11 in adolescents) of osteomyelitis after closed fracture have been reported in literature. The authors report a case of osteomyelitis in an 8-year-old girl after a forearm fracture involving the diaphysis of the radius and ulna. Radiographic examinations were performed 5, 14, and 30 days after trauma. At last e

HYPOTHESIS: Nonunion of the medial epicondyle can cause symptoms of pain and instability in certain high-demand individuals. Problems with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) have led some to recommend excision of the nonunited fragment, followed by soft tissue repair. This study tests the hypothesis that patients with symptomatic nonunion of the medial epicondyle can be successfully treated with ORIF using a tension band construct.
METHODS: Five male patients were identified who underwent ORIF of a chronic, nonunited medial epicondyle fracture. Patients were a mean age of 15.8 years

Muscle fatigue alters neuromuscular responses. This may lead to increased sensitivity to perturbations and possibly to subsequent injury risk. We studied the effects of muscle fatigue on movement stability during a repetitive upper extremity task. Twenty healthy young subjects performed a repetitive work task, similar to sawing, synchronized with a metronome before and after performing each of two fatiguing tasks. The first fatigue task (LIFT) primarily fatigued the shoulder flexor muscles, while the second fatigue task (SAW) fatigued all of the muscles of the arm. Subjects performed each task

A 44-year-old woman with a history of borderline personality disorder, Hepatitis C, and multiple hospital admissions for cellulitis and cutaneous abscesses presented with pain of several days duration in her left upper extremity following getting her left arm "stuck" in a subway turnstile. The pain and swelling had progressively worsened following the injury. At the time of presentation the patient's temperature was 98.6 degrees F, heart rate was 82 beats/minute, blood pressure of 116/60, and an oxygen saturation of 98% on room air. The left upper extremity was diffusely swollen but minimally

Iatrogenic deltoid injury can result in severe shoulder dysfunction and pain. We used an augmentation patch (porcine submucosa) concomitantly to assist in deltoid repair. We prospectively studied 14 patients (mean age, 57.9 years). All underwent deltoidplasty for postoperative deltoid dehiscence with the orthobiologic patch placed around the detached deltoid and subsequent transosseous repair to the acromion (mean follow-up, 30 months [range, 24-62 months]). Ten patients underwent concomitant revision rotator cuff repair. All patients had undergone at least 1 previous operation. All improved p

The development of heterotopic ossification (HO) as a complication of toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) has not been previously reported. TEN, also known as Lyell's syndrome, is a rare but serious skin disorder that typically occurs after the administration of drugs, especially sulfonamides, barbiturates, phenytoin, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents. TEN is characterized by the development of large fluid-filled bullae with separation of large sheets of skin. Complications of TEN can include extensive denudation of skin with dehydration and electrolyte abnormalities, gastrointestinal hem

Investigators have suggested that the greater prevalence of lateral humeral epicondylitis (tennis elbow, TE) in novice tennis players compared to expert players may reflect the novice players' use of faulty mechanics for the backhand stroke. We investigated the wrist kinematics (flexion/extension), grip pressures, and wrist muscle electromyographic activity in novice (N = 8) and expert (N = 8) tennis players performing the backhand stroke. Experts performed the backhand stroke with the wrist extended (re: neutral alignment of the forearm and hand dorsum). Collision of the ball and racket occur

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Monteggia equivalent fractures, a spectrum of proximal ulnar and radial injuries extending beyond classic Monteggia patterns, are rare and diagnostically challenging, particularly in adults. Delayed presentation further complicates management and increases the risk of long-term morbidity. This report details a case series of two adult patients with Type I Monteggia Equivalent fractures, one with a delayed presentation, successfully treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of the radial fracture. We aim to elucidate effective diagnostic and treatment
