The essential role of upper airway muscles in maintaining patency has led to the hypothesis that alterations in tongue muscle properties may contribute to the development of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Prior studies comparing the mechanical characteristics of tongue muscles in OSA patients and healthy controls have yielded inconsistent results. In this study, we evaluated tongue muscle mechanics using an objective, non-volitional method: surface electrical stimulation of the genioglossus (GG) muscle. Tongue protrusion force, whether generated volitionally or by electrical stimulation, was s

It is not clear whether swallowing, which is induced by electrical stimulation of the superior laryngeal nerve (SLN), dominantly suppresses respiration. We examined how the swallowing coordinates with respiration in adult rats under continuous infusion of dexmedetomidine, which possesses α2-adrenoceptor/imidazoline I1 receptor (α2AR/I1R) mediated sedative-analgesic profile with minimal direct GABAergic potentiation, thereby reducing interference with swallowing circuitry. Prior to the experiment, adult rats (203-322 g, n = 12) under isoflurane anesthesia had their tail vein cannulated for dexm

OBJECTIVE: Ultrahigh frequencies (UHF) have been shown to selectively suppress the sensory pathway with a rapid onset and prolonged effect compared with low frequencies. Few studies have explored the feasibility of UHF electrical stimulation in treating overactive bladder. This study aimed to investigate whether bladder overactivity could be inhibited by UHF stimulation at the L6 nerve root.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Female Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 12) were divided into two groups: sham and UHF groups. Bladder overactivity was induced by continuous intravesical infusion of 0.5% acetic acid (AA).

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has demonstrated potential in mitigating Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the invasive nature of DBS presents challenges for its application. The olfactory bulb (OB), showing early AD-related changes and extensive connections with memory regions, offers an attractive entry point for intervention, potentially restoring normal activity in deteriorating memory circuits.
AIMS: Our study examined the impact of electrically stimulating the OB on working memory as well as pathological and electrophysiological alterations in the OB, medial prefrontal cortex,

OBJECTIVE: Electrical stimulation of the pudendal nerve (PN) is a potential therapy for bladder dysfunction, but voiding efficiency (VE) produced by PN stimulation appears limited to 60-70%. We conducted experiments in rats and cats to investigate the hypothesis that introduction of artificial phasic bursting activity of the external urethral sphincter (EUS) would enhance VE under conditions where such activity was absent.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cystometry experiments were conducted in 17 urethane anesthetized female Sprague-Dawley rats and 4 α-chloralose anesthetized male cats. The effects o

1. Studies of the effect of vagus nerve stimulation on ventricular myocardial function in mammals are limited, particularly in the human. 2. The present study was designed to determine the effect of direct electrical stimulation of the left vagus nerve on left ventricular contractile state in hearts paced at 10 % above the natural rate, in anaesthetised pigs and anaesthetised human subjects undergoing open chest surgery for coronary artery bypass grafting. 3. Contractility of the left ventricle was determined from a series of pressure-volume loops obtained from a combined pressure and conducta

Massed electrical stimulation of the anterior piriform cortex (PC) in rats using short (5 min) interstimulus intervals has previously been reported to induce severe chronic epilepsy with spontaneous seizures and has thus proposed to represent a novel model of temporal lobe epilepsy. In the present study, we used this stimulation protocol to evaluate the frequency and severity of recurrent spontaneous seizures produced in this way. In addition to the locus in the anterior PC previously used for massed stimulation (MS), we also stimulated rats via a locus in the transition zone between anterior

To elucidate the origin of the early component of the trigeminal sensory evoked potential (TSEP) we reported in 1985, we recorded evoked potentials on the trigeminal root and the brain stem surface intracranially when suboccipital craniectomy was done for exploration of the C-P angle. Patients consisted of 4 who had idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia with microvascular decompression, 1 with glossopharyngeal neuralgia who also had microvascular decompression of the left glossopharyngeal nerve, and 5 patients with different tumors, specifically, Meckel's cave meningioma, two epidermoid cysts of the

Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is the principal cause of chronic low back pain, characterized by extracellular matrix (ECM) catabolism and an exacerbated inflammatory milieu. Given the inherent difficulties in achieving biological restoration through conventional clinical modalities, we herein designed an ultrasound (US)-driven electroactive composite system aimed at non-invasively modulating the degenerative disc via exogenous bioelectric signaling. To overcome the charge carrier recombination drawback typical of single-phase piezoelectrics, a BaTiO3/ZnO heterojunction (shortened as

This case report describes a patient (male, 10 years old) with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and multiple comorbidities, including epilepsy, gastrointestinal and sleep disturbances, and obesity. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) identified two variants of uncertain significance (VUS) in the GRID2 gene. Mutations in this gene are associated with spinocerebellar ataxia type 18 (SCA18). However, this finding did not correlate with the clinical presentation of the patient. This study evaluates the effects of Radio Electric Asymmetric Conveyer (REAC) stimulation on the cognitive-behavioral dysfunctions

This cross-diagnostic study aims to computationally model electric field (efield) for prefrontal transcranial direct current stimulation in mood disorders and schizophrenia. Enrolled were patients with major depressive disorder (n = 23), bipolar disorder (n = 24), schizophrenia (n = 23), and healthy controls (n = 23). The efield was simulated using SimNIBS software (ver.2.1.1). Electrodes were placed at the left and right prefrontal areas and the current intensity was set to 2 mA intensity. Schizophrenia and major depressive disorder groups showed significantly lower 99.5th percentile efield s

Faecal incontinence and urinary incontinence are common and often associated. Sacral neurostimulation is a validated technique for treating each of these two types of incontinence, taken separately. The purpose of this study was to review the literature on the results of this treatment for double incontinence. A literature search was conducted using MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library using the keywords "faecal incontinence", "anal incontinence", "urinary incontinence", "urgency", "urinary disorder", "neurostimulation", "sacral nerve stimulation" and "electric nerve stimulation".

OBJECTIVE: We propose, design and test a novel thin-film multichannel electrode that can be used for both recording from and stimulating a muscle in acute implants.
APPROACH: The system is built on a substrate of polyimide and contains 12 recording and three stimulation sites made of platinum. The structure is 420 µm wide, 20 µm thick and embeds the recording and stimulation contacts on the two sides of the polyimide over an approximate length of 2 cm. We show representative applications in healthy individuals as well as tremor patients. The designed system was tested by a psychometric charac

1. The cardiovascular responses to electrical stimulation of the central nucleus of the amygdala (c.n.) have been studied in chloralose-anaesthetized rabbits. A pattern of response involving bradycardia, hypotension and hind-limb vasodilatation, accompanied by an increase in the rate of phrenic nerve discharge, was evoked only in response to stimulation within the medial portion of the c.n. 2. The cardiovascular responses were not secondary to the changes in respiratory activity since they were unaffected by altering central respiratory drive by either hypo- or hyperventilation of the animal.

Human corneal epithelial cells respond rapidly following injury to restore the integrity of the ocular surface. What stimulates and guides cells to move into the wound to heal? One candidate is the wound-induced electric field. Using vibrating probe techniques, we provide detailed temporal and spatial mapping of endogenous electric currents at rat corneal wounds. We find Cl- and Na+ are the major components of electric currents in rat corneal wounds. Na+ is the major component of ionic transport in the resting (nonwounded) rat cornea and of the wound center leakage current, whereas Cl- is a mo

INTRODUCTION: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) and peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) are used to treat refractory pain, but even well-selected patients can fail to have analgesic benefit following implantation. The analgesia afforded by SCS/PNS may be enhanced or attenuated by the ongoing use of analgesic medications that are often consumed by patients who receive SCS and PNS implants. We undertook a scoping review to scan and summarize the evidence for impact of adjuvant pharmacotherapy on SCS and PNS therapy in animal and human settings.

Currently, clinical practice and scientific research mostly revolve around a single disease or system, but the single disease-oriented diagnostic and therapeutic paradigm needs to be revised. This review describes how transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS), a novel non-invasive neuromodulation approach, connects the central and peripheral systems of the body. Through stimulation of the widely distributed vagus nerve from the head to the abdominal cavity, this therapy can improve and treat central system disorders, peripheral system disorders, and central-peripheral comorbidit

Perseverative cognitions can provoke psychophysiological stress in the absence of an actual stressor and are considered important transdiagnostic vulnerability factors for several (mental) health issues. These stress-related cognitive processes are reflected by both cognitive (assessed by self-reports) and autonomic inflexibility (assessed by heart rate variability; HRV), with a key role attributed to the vagus nerve. Interestingly, modulation of the afferent branches of the vagus can be achieved with transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS), a non-invasive technique that emplo
