Regulation of the gut-specific carboxypeptidase: a study using the binary Gal4/UAS system in the mosquito Aedes aegypti.

Pathogen transmission by mosquitoes is tightly linked to blood feeding which, in turn, is required for egg development. Studies of these processes would greatly benefit from genetic methods, such as the binary Gal4/UAS system. The latter has been well established for model organisms, but its availability is limited for mosquitoes. The objective of this study was to develop the blood-meal-activated, gut-specific Gal4/UAS system for the yellow-fever mosquito Aedes aegypti and utilize it to investigate the regulation of gut-specific gene expression. A 1.1-kb, 5(') upstream region of the carboxype

Fast track surgery to reduce short-term complications following radical cystectomy and intestinal urinary diversion with Vescica Ileale Padovana neobladder: proposal for a tailored enhanced recovery protocol and preliminary report from a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Different fast track programs for patients undergoing radical cystectomy (RC) can be found in the current literature. The aim of this work was to develop a new enhanced recovery protocol (ERP). PATIENTS AND METHODS: The ERP was designed after a structured literature review focusing on reduced bowel preparation, standardized feeding, postoperative nausea, vomiting and pain control. In order to test the ERP, a pilot observational prospective cohort study was planned, enrolling all patients consecutively undergoing RC and Vescica Ileale Padovana (VIP) neobladder. These patients were c

"Fast proteins" with a unique essential amino acid content as an optimal nutrition in the elderly: growing evidence.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Adequate protein intake is crucial to maintain body protein content in elderly subjects, but quality of dietary proteins should be also considered since amino acid composition and rate of protein digestion modulate amino acid availability. This study investigates whether the efficacy of optimal protein intake levels for protein retention in the elderly is influenced by protein quality. METHODS: We investigated the effect of a 10-day adequate-protein (AP) or high-protein (HP) diet together with the protein source as caseins (CAS) or soluble milk proteins (PRO) on whole-body

A corn oil-based diet protects against combined ethanol and iron-induced liver injury in a mouse model of hemochromatosis.

BACKGROUND: Combined iron overload and alcohol may promote synergistic chronic liver injury and toxicity. The role of specific dietary fats in influencing the development of co-toxic alcoholic liver disease needs further evaluation and is investigated in this study. METHODS: Wild-type (WT) and the iron-loaded Hfe-null (Hfe(-/-) ) mice were fed chow (CC), a AIN-93G standard control (SC), or a corn oil-modified, AIN-93G-based (CO) diet with or without the addition of 20% ethanol (EtOH) in the drinking water for 8 weeks and assessed for liver injury. RESULTS: WT mice on CC, SC, and CO diets had

The impact of early nutrition on health: key findings from the Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey (CLHNS).

INTRODUCTION: The Philippines' Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey (CLHNS) is one of the longest running birth cohort studies in Southeast Asia. This paper illustrates the pathways through which maternal and infant nutrition influence later health outcomes using selected CLHNS findings. METHODS: The CLHNS initially examined the determinants and consequences of low birth weight and early nutrition on child growth and development. It has since expanded to study other health, nutrition, and demographic issues in the life course of the cohort participants such as the consequences of ear

Temporal lobe arteriovenous malformations: anatomical subtypes, surgical strategy, and outcomes.

OBJECT: Descriptions of temporal lobe arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are inconsistent. To standardize reporting, the authors blended existing descriptions in the literature into an intuitive classification with 5 anatomical subtypes: lateral, medial, basal, sylvian, and ventricular. The authors' surgical experience with temporal lobe AVMs was reviewed according to these subtypes. METHODS: Eighty-eight patients with temporal lobe AVMs were treated surgically. RESULTS: Lateral temporal lobe AVMs were the most common (58 AVMs, 66%). Thirteen AVMs (15%) were medial, 9 (10%) were basal, and 5

Can antenatal ultrasounds help predict postnatal outcomes in babies born with gastrochisis? The West Virginia experience.

OBJECTIVE: Gastrochisis is a congenital condition resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. Multiple studies have been done to evaluate the value of prognostic indicators with conflicting results. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of ultrasound in this condition at a single institution while limiting the provider variables that may affect neonatal outcome. METHODS: The antepartum charts of expectant mothers of affected fetuses as well as the neonatal hospital charts were reviewed at length. The cases were identified over a period of 4 years from April 1998 to February 200

Cranial nerve IX and X impairment after a sports-related Jefferson (C1) fracture in a 16-year-old male: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Jefferson (C1) fractures are rare cervical spine injuries that usually do not result in cranial nerve (CN) impairment. However, case reports of Collet-Sicard syndrome (impairment of CNs IX-XII) and impairment of CNs IX, X, and XII have been reported. All reported cases involved adult patients in high-impact collisions, such as motor vehicle accidents or falls. To our knowledge, a Jefferson fracture with selective CN impairment due to a low-energy, sports-related injury in a pediatric patient has not been reported. METHODS: Chart and radiographic data for a single case were reviewe

Combination treatment of parenteral arginine and nitric oxide inhibitor N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester in rats with peritonitis.

PURPOSE: It has been shown that parenteral arginine may facilitate ureagenesis and improve leukocytic and splenocytic immunity and that the infusion of nitric oxide synthase inhibitor N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) may facilitate the production of arginine-associated amino acids in rats with subacute peritonitis. Herein, we investigated the effects of the combined treatment of parenteral arginine and L-NAME on arginine metabolism and inflammatory response. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Male Wistar rats underwent cecal puncture for induction of subacute peritonitis and were infused with

Swietenia macrophylla extract promotes the ability of Caenorhabditis elegans to survive Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Swietenia macrophylla or commonly known as big leaf mahogany, has been traditionally used as an antibacterial and antifungal agent. AIM OF THE STUDY: The unwanted problem of antibiotic resistance in many bacterial species advocates the need for the discovery of the new anti-infective drugs. Here, we investigated the anti-infective properties of Swietenia macrophylla with an assay involving lethal infection of Caenorhabditis elegans with the opportunistic human pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a slow killing assay, Caenorhabditis el

Utility of pharmacologic provocative neurological testing before embolization of occipital lobe arteriovenous malformations.

OBJECTIVE: Endovascular treatment is an established option for treatment of cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). However, embolization has been associated with postprocedural neurological complications. We sought to evaluate the usefulness of intra-arterial pharmacologic provocative (superselective Wada) testing before embolization of occipital lobe AVMs. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of cases of occipital AVMs that were embolized at our institution (Millard Fillmore Gates Hospital) while the patient was under conscious sedation. Visual field testing was performed befor

Triple tube therapy: a novel enteral feeding technique for short bowel syndrome in low-income countries.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a global malabsorption syndrome that results from extensive intestinal resection. We report our experience of 10 neonates with short bowel managed by a novel triple tube enteral feeding technique. The aim of this research was to provide justification for enteral nutritional strategies to enhance intestinal adaptation, especially in developing countries where parenteral nutrition is either unavailable or expensive. METHODS: From March 2004 to January 2006, 10 neonates underwent extensive bowel resection, enterostomy, and mucous fistula for necr

Influence of adding fish oil to parenteral nutrition on gut-associated lymphoid tissue.

BACKGROUND: Lack of enteral nutrition reduces gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) mass and function, a mechanism underlying the increased morbidity of infectious complications in severely injured or critically ill patients. Strategies to restore parenteral nutrition (PN)-induced changes of GALT mass and function have been pursued. However, the influences of adding fish oil to PN on gut immunity remain to be clarified. METHODS: Male Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) mice (n = 50) were randomized to 4 groups: ad libitum chow (chow), fat free PN (fat (-)-PN), PN + fish oil (FO-PN), and PN + s

Assessment of spinal cord circulation and function in endovascular treatment of thoracic aortic aneurysms.

BACKGROUND: In thoracic stent graft repair, the importance of segmental artery (SA) occlusion and the role of blood pressure management during the intraoperative and directly postoperative period are not clear. To study these aspects in relation to spinal cord ischemia, our protocol in the endovascular treatment of descending thoracic aneurysms covering segmental arteries T8 and lower includes preoperative assessment of the spinal cord circulation using magnetic resonance angiography, intraoperative cerebrospinal fluid drainage, and spinal cord function monitoring using motor evoked potentials

Relative implant volume and sensibility alterations after breast augmentation.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have provided diverging results regarding the factors that may affect sensibility after primary breast augmentation. Implant volume is believed to be an important factor, but the relation of implant size to breast volume has not been adequately addressed. In addition, the literature shows that a conflict exists when the periareolar and inframammary approaches are compared. This study aimed to refine the volumetric analysis comparing the implant and final breast size as well as the intrinsic association of these two factors with postoperative sensory alteration of the
