Thermoregulation, incubator humidity, and skincare practices in appropriate for gestational age ultra-low birth weight infants: need for more evidence.

BACKGROUND: Although not universal, active care is being offered to infants weighing < 500 g at birth, referred to as ultra-low birth weight (ULBW) infants appropriate for gestational age. These infants have the greatest risk of dying or developing major morbidities. ULBW infants face challenges related to fluid and heat loss as well as skin injury in the initial days of life from extreme anatomical and physiological immaturity of the skin. Although there is an emerging literature on the outcomes of ULBW infants, there is a paucity of evidence to inform practice guidelines for delivering optim

Resveratrol and clofarabine induces a preferential apoptosis-activating effect on malignant mesothelioma cells by Mcl-1 down-regulation and caspase-3 activation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: There is a risk that disturbances of activities of daily living (ADL) due to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are increased by the occurrence of fractures, including vertebral compression fractures and femoral neck fractures, in RA patients receiving oral corticosteroid therapy. Bisphosphonates are most commonly used in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. In a large-scale, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study that was performed to assess the prophylactic efficacy of bisphosphonates, alendronic acid decreased the incidence of vertebral fractures by app

Expanding physical assessment education in pharmacy curricula: A qualitative study to identify and implement high-value skills for clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: The expanding scope of pharmacy practice and the growing demand for accessible frontline healthcare underscore the importance of integrating physical assessment (PA) skills into pharmacy curricula. While basic vital signs are commonly taught, the inclusion of more advanced PA skills remains inconsistent, and little is known about how these skills should be prioritized within entry-to-practice programs. OBJECTIVE: To explore pharmacy educators' and practitioners' perspectives on the prioritization of PA skills in undergraduate pharmacy education and to identify key barriers and fac

Incorporating self-management in prosthetic rehabilitation: case report of an integrated knowledge-to-action process.

BACKGROUND: In improvement of clinical practice, unidirectional approaches of translating evidence into clinical practice have been pinpointed as main obstacles. The concept of engaged scholarship has been introduced to guide knowledge-to-action (KTA) processes, in which research knowledge and practical knowledge derived from therapists, patients, and organizational structures mutually inform each other. Accordingly, KTA experts should engage end-users earlier in knowledge translation and work in concert with them on both knowledge creation and knowledge implementation. PURPOSE: The purposes

Implementation methods for delivery room management: a quality improvement comparison study.

BACKGROUND: There is little evidence to compare the effectiveness of large collaborative quality improvement versus individual local projects. METHODS: This was a prospective pre-post intervention study of neonatal resuscitation practice, comparing 3 groups of nonrandomized hospitals in the California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative: (1) collaborative, hospitals working together through face-to-face meetings, webcasts, electronic mailing list, and data sharing; (2) individual, hospitals working independently; and (3) nonparticipant hospitals. Nipple care, sore nipples, and breastfeeding: a randomized trial.

Sore and cracked nipples are common and may represent an obstacle to successful breastfeeding. In Italy, it is customary for health professionals to prescribe some type of ointment to prevent or treat sore and cracked nipples. The efficacy of these ointments is insufficiently documented. The incidence of sore and cracked nipples was compared between mothers given routine nipple care, including an ointment (control group), and mothers instructed to avoid the use of nipple creams and other products (intervention group). Breastfeeding duration was also compared between the two groups. Eligible mo

Sexual practices, sexually transmitted diseases and other risk factors for HIV among injecting drug users.

Data were collected from 814 clients attending anonymously for counselling before tests for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection at the Burnett Clinic in Auckland. Just over 10 per cent of clients (n = 83) reported ever having injected drugs. This group was matched according to age, gender, ethnicity and sexual orientation with an equal sized control group drawn from clients who had not injected drugs. The groups were compared in terms of their sexual practices, sexual partnerships, other drug use, current and past health status and their perception of HIV risk. The injecting drug user

Normal values for peripheral blood white cell counts in women of four different ethnic origins.

Total and differential white cell counts were studied in 399 women living in the same community in Britain but drawn from four different ethnic groups. The groups were white (northern European), Indian, black (African and West Indian), and Oriental. The total white cell count and absolute neutrophil count were significantly lower in the black group than in each of the other groups. The absolute monocyte count was higher in whites than in each of the other groups. Contrary to earlier reports, the absolute eosinophil count in blacks was no higher than in whites, suggesting that the high eosinoph

Artificial Intelligence-Driven Clinical Decision Support for Postoperative Delirium Prevention: A Pragmatic Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative delirium affects up to 50% of older adults with cognitive impairment, yet preoperative identification of at-risk patients remains limited. Artificial intelligence methods, such as natural language processing, can extract cognitive impairment signals from electronic health records and enable targeted clinical decision support interventions to promote adherence to perioperative best practices and reduce postoperative delirium. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an artificial intelligence-driven non-interruptive clinical decision support intervention in reducing p

Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices About the Use of Silver Diamine Fluoride Among Dentists in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Introduction Dental caries is a worldwide disease affecting children and older populations. There are multiple interventions to treat dental caries that could be sometimes hard to deliver, due to the general status of patients such as insufficient cooperation or medically compromising conditions. Therefore, another alternative to control dental caries is being used and has been recently introduced and approved by the Saudi FDA which is silver diamine fluoride (SDF).  Objectives This study aimed to investigate the level of knowledge, attitudes, and practices about the use of SDF among dentists

Improving patient education about tobacco withdrawal and nicotine gum use by registered nurses in inpatient psychiatry: A feasibility study.

UNLABELLED: WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Many psychiatric inpatients use tobacco, but most psychiatric hospital units prohibit tobacco use. Psychiatric nurses do not receive adequate education about how to teach patients to best manage tobacco withdrawal symptoms. WHAT DOES THIS PAPER ADD TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: Psychiatric nurses who receive a brief educational intervention about tobacco withdrawal symptoms and best practices for using nicotine gum may be more prepared to teach patients about these topics. In turn, patients may use nicotine gum more often during their hospitalization, leadi

Community perspectives on canine-mediated rabies risk in the Klang Valley, Malaysia: implications for outbreak preparedness.

BACKGROUND: Despite being declared rabies-free in 2012, Malaysia has experienced a resurgence of canine-mediated rabies since 2015, with the Klang Valley, a densely populated urban hub, facing an increasing threat. The success of elimination efforts hinges on community engagement. Yet, baseline data on public knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) in this critical region are limited. This study aimed to assess the cognitive (knowledge), affective (attitude), and behavioural (practice) domains of the Klang Valley community regarding canine-mediated rabies to inform targeted public health int

Which bath is better? Evaluating comfort and vital signs in pediatric intensive care unit: A quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Bathing cleanses the skin, and the wiping and scrubbing movements during bathing stimulate blood circulation and help oxygenate tissues. There are two types of baths commonly used in intensive care: the traditional bath is washing the child with running water in the bed, and the wiping bathis wiping the child with warm, damp cloths. We planned this study to determine the effect of traditional and wiping baths on vital parameters (pulse rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, body temperature, mean blood pressure) and comfort of children in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
