Specific risk factors for contracting Q fever: lessons from the outbreak Jena.

A Q fever outbreak with 331 reported cases in seven weeks occurred in a densely populated residential district in Jena (Germany) in 2005. Prompt identification of a stable infection source follow by an intense information policy, well defined and stable meteorological conditions and a large number of reported cases within one small community all allowed us to study promoting and protecting factors of Q fever. We conducted a cross-sectional study and investigated a part of the affected area for 100% sampling (in-home interviews). Out of 608 residents at home 460 (75.7%) participated in the stud

Oscillating central motor networks in pathological tremors and voluntary movements. What makes the difference?

Parkinsonian tremor (PD), essential tremor (ET) and voluntarily mimicked tremor represent fundamentally different motor phenomena, yet, magnetoencephalographic and imaging data suggest their origin in the same motor centers of the brain. Using EEG-EMG coherence and coherent source analysis we found a different pattern of corticomuscular delays, time courses and central representations for the basic and double tremor frequencies typical for PD suggesting a wider range defective oscillatory activity. For the basic tremor frequency similar central representations in primary sensorimotor, prefront

Pulmonary blood volume imaging with dual-energy computed tomography: spectrum of findings.

Dual-energy (DE) pulmonary blood volume (PBV) computed tomography (CT) has recently become available on clinical CT systems. The underlying physical principle of DECT is the fact that the photoelectric effect is strongly dependent on the CT energies resulting in different degrees of x-ray attenuation for different materials at different energy levels. DECT thus enables the characterization and quantification of iodine within tissues via imaging at different x-ray energies and analysis of attenuation differences. Technical approaches to DECT include dual-source scanners acquiring two scans with

Nonsurgical pneumoperitoneum in a dog secondary to blunt force trauma to the chest.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the medical management of pneumoperitoneum without surgical intervention in a dog that sustained blunt force trauma to the thorax. To review the mechanisms of how a thoracic injury (ie, extra-abdominal source) can lead to pneumoperitoneum. CASE SUMMARY: A 4-month-old Shih Tzu puppy was attacked by a larger dog and sustained various injuries including a pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum, and a pneumoperitoneum. The dog presented minimally responsive and in respiratory distress secondary to pulmonary contusions and noncardiogenic pulmonary edema. No penetrating wounds to th

Consistency between most important reasons for using contraception and current method used: the influence of health care providers.

OBJECTIVE: To identify factors related to consistency between women's "most important" reason for using contraception and their current contraceptive method. METHODS: A sample of 433 women completed a written questionnaire on demographics, contraceptive use history and the "most important" reason for using contraception. Women were grouped by whether their current contraceptive method "agreed" or "disagreed" with their "most important" reason for contracepting. Multivariable regression was used to identify factors associated with consistency between stated "most important" reason and current

Obsessive-compulsive disorder, tics and anxiety in 6-year-old twins.

BACKGROUND: Previous reports of genetic influences on obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms have suggested moderate heritability. Family history studies of co-morbidity have found familial aggregation with tics, especially for early-onset OCD, and familial aggregation with anxiety disorders. METHOD: Heritability of OCD and familial aggregation of OCD, tics and anxiety disorders were investigated in a community sample of 6-year-old twins using a two-phase design in which 4662 twin pairs were sampled and 854 pairs were assessed in the second phase by maternal-informant diagnostic intervi

Perspectives on applied spatial analysis to animal health: a case of rodents in Thailand.

Geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing have been increasingly used in ecology and epidemiology, providing a spatial approach for animal health issues. Recent development of earth environmental satellites--i.e., their growing number, improving sensor resolutions and capabilities--has offered new opportunities to delineate possible habitats and understand animals and associated parasites in their environment, by identifying the nature and structure of land use, hydrological network, soil hydromorphy, and human settlements. Integrated into GIS, remotely sensed and other geo-refer

Using concentration-discharge hysteresis to infer recharge processes in karst springs: A case study of the Malenščica and Unica springs, SW Slovenia.

Karst aquifers are recharged both by diffuse infiltration through soil and rock (autogenic recharge) and by concentrated inflow through swallow holes and sinking streams (allogenic recharge). Differences in the origin of water are reflected in rapid changes in its physicochemical and microbiological characteristics. Various approaches are used to monitor these changes and analyse the data obtained. In this paper, concentration-discharge hysteresis analysis is used to define and compare the recharge characteristics of two karst springs. The study was conducted in a binary karst aquifer in the c

A phenomenology of submicron organic aerosol components in urban France based on long-term online observations and modeling.

This study presents the first nationwide phenomenological analysis of submicron organic aerosol (OA) sources in France, based on highly time‑resolved Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (ACSM) measurements collected at 12 (sub)urban sites over one to seven years. A harmonized rolling Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) approach was applied, ensuring consistent constraints and criteria across all datasets. The methodology enabled the identification of major OA sources, including primary OA (POA) factors such as hydrocarbon-like OA (HOA), biomass burning OA (BBOA), and cooking-like OA (COA), whi

Cervical Cancer Screening in Women Living with HIV in South Africa: Addressing Health Disparities Through Integrated Prevention Strategies.

BACKGROUND: South Africa confronts a syndemic triple burden of HIV, tuberculosis, and cervical cancer. Women living with HIV (WLHIV) carry a three- to six-fold elevated cervical cancer risk-a biological synergy reflected in persistently high mortality despite progressive screening policies. This review synthesises evidence for why policy has not achieved population-level impact and proposes an integrated prevention model anchored in existing HIV infrastructure. METHODS: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines and the Population-Exposure-Outcome (PEO) framework (Population: WLHIV in South Africa; Expo

Beyond virality: evaluating evidence-based content delivery in social media-based pediatric orthodontic education.

BACKGROUND: Malocclusion, affecting over 260 million Chinese children, demands early orthodontic intervention to address both physiological and psychosocial impacts. While social media platforms have become primary sources of health guidance for parents, their algorithm-driven ecosystems often prioritize engagement over scientific rigor. Content creators, including unqualified influencers, frequently disseminate unverified claims about treatment timing, methods, and outcomes. Such misinformation may exacerbate parental anxiety, or promote non-evidence-based interventions. This study evaluates

Full spectrum modeling of in situ gamma-ray detector measurements with a focus on precipitation-induced transients.

Gamma-ray detectors that are deployed outdoors experience increased event rates during precipitation due to the attendant increase in Rn-222 progeny at ground level. The increased radiation due to these decay products (Pb-214 and Bi-214) has been studied for many decades in applications such as atmospheric science and radiation protection. For those applications radon progeny signatures are the signal of interest, while in the fields of radiological and nuclear security and aerial radiological mapping they are a nuisance. When searching for radiological contamination or missing sources, an ana
