OBJECTIVE: Acute stress in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) should stimulate a strong stress response. After cryotherapy, we expected to observe an increase of hormones of the adrenal gland and the sympathetic nervous system.
METHODS: A total of 55 patients with RA were recruited for whole-body cryotherapy at -110 degrees C and -60 degrees C, and local cold therapy between -20 degrees C and -30 degrees C for 7 days. We measured plasma levels of steroid hormones, neuropeptide Y (sympathetic marker), and interleukin (IL)6 daily before and after cryotherapy.

Burkholderia pseudomallei is the causative agent of melioidosis. One of the main risk factors for B. pseudomallei infection in endemic areas is diabetes mellitus. The present study investigated IL-17 mRNA and protein expression by peripheral blood mononuclear cells in response to B. pseudomallei infection in 10 diabetic patients in comparison to 10 healthy blood donors. We present a case of metastatic spreading to the testicle in a 46-year-old patient with renal cell carcinoma, "clear-cell" type, during interleukin-2 combined subcutaneous plus aerosol treatment. OBJECTIVES: Replication-competent, vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) has been demonstrated to be an effective oncolytic agent in a variety of malignant tumors. Cytokine gene transfer has also been used as immunomodulatory therapy for cancer. To test the use of combining these two approaches, an oncolytic VSV vector (rVSV-IL12) was designed to express the murine interleukin 12 (IL12) gene. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to explore the mechanisms of local innate immunity induction and modulation in pregnant women with bacterial vaginosis (BV).
STUDY DESIGN: A total of 200 singleton pregnant women in early gestation (12 +/- 4 weeks) with BV (Nugent 7-10) without concurrent vaginal infections with Trichomonas vaginalis, Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, syphilis, and yeast. Concentrations of vaginal interleukin (IL)-1beta and IL-8, the number of neutrophils, and the levels of sialidase and prolidase hydrolytic enzymes were determined in vaginal fluid.
