Lymphocytes from a patient with preclinical late infantile Batten disease were cultured alone and with lymphocytes from donors, and the fate of the curvilinear inclusions characteristic of the disease was monitored by electron microscopy. There was no evidence of transfer of deficient enzyme or factor that might have caused removal of the stored material, and the curvilinear profiles remained in the cultured cells without signs of degradation. Open deltoid muscle biopsy specimens from patients with idiopathic adult dermatomyositis, paraneoplastic dermatomyositis, childhood dermatomyositis, and idiopathic polymyositis, and from control patients were studied. Nonparasitic cysts of the spleen are classified as primary or epithelial cysts if their inner surface has a cellular lining. Depending upon the pattern of the inner surface cell layer, the primary splenic cysts are divided into mesothelial or epidermoid subtypes. In this study, scanning electron microscopy was used to describe the surface morphology of fissured tongue. Tissue samples from the anterior part of the tongue were taken from 15 patients with fissured tongue. The formalin-fixed samples were processed routinely for scanning electron microscopy.
