A Systematic Review of Oral Vertical Dyskinesia ("Rabbit" Syndrome).

Background and Objectives: Vertical rhythmic dyskinetic movements that are primarily drug-induced and affect solely the jaw, mouth, and lips without involving the tongue have been historically described as "rabbit" syndrome (RS). Evidence on the unique features and implications of this disorder remains limited. This literature review aims to evaluate the clinical-epidemiological profile, pathological mechanisms, and management of this movement disorder. Materials and Methods: Two reviewers identified and assessed relevant reports in six databases without language restriction published between

[Rheumatological Diseases and Sleep: Somnological Aspects of Diagnostics and Therapy].

UNLABELLED: This PubMed-based review discusses primary and secondary sleep disorders associated with rheumatological diseases. It presents t … cales. Objective tests are used to measure reaction time and vigilance. Sleep-related breathing and movement disorders can be identified with screening devices and polygrafic monitoring. A final polysomnografic sleep study is necessary to make the diagnosis and to initiate a specific treatment and follow-up examinations. TREATMENT: Sleep disorders associated with r …

Monogenic variants in dystonia: an exome-wide sequencing study.

BACKGROUND: Dystonia is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous condition that occurs in isolation (isolated dystonia), in combination with other movement disorders (combined dystonia), or in the context of multisymptomatic phenotypes (isolated or combined dystonia with other neurological involvement). However, our understanding of its aetiology is still incomplete. We aimed to elucidate the monogenic causes for the major clinical categories of dystonia. METHODS: For this exome-wide sequencing study, study participants were identified at 33 movement-disorder and neuropaediatric specialty c…

PDFormer: A Multimodal Transformer for Quantifying Motor Symptom Severity in Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by deteriorating motor function and remains incurable. Diagnosis and monitoring remain largely clinical, as the pathological gold standard - post-mortem examination - is inherently impractical in routine care; the scarcity of movement disorder specialists further underscores the need for scalable, objective assessment. In this study, we present a data-driven AI framework for automated and objective quantification of PD motor symptom severity. Specifically, we introduce the MVPD dataset, a clinically realistic vi

REM sleep behavior disorder with predominant nightmares in a patient with ischemic pontine lesions.

UNLABELLED: Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a parasomnia typically associated with synucleinopathy and evolving to neurodegenerative disorders. RBD is caused by impairment of brainstem nuclei controlling REM sleep muscle atonia. Rarely, focal lesions of the brainstem can cause secondary RBD. We present the case of a 74-year-old patient, previously evaluated at age 70 years for insomnia and periodic limb movements during sleep, who then rapidly developed unpleasant dreams with minor motor behavior, affecting his sleep quality. Polysomnography recorded REM sleep without

Nightmares in Migraine: A Focused Review.

Nightmares usually occur during the sleep phase of rapid eye movement (REM) and are associated with some physical symptoms, including sweating, shortness of breath, and lower limb movements. Emotions of fear, anger, shame, and sadness may also accompany nightmares. These symptoms can occur during dreaming, upon awakening, or later when the dream experience is recollected. Nightmares may sporadically occur for everyone, but nightmare disorders are associated with features of impaired mental and physical health and require professional medical treatment. The occurrence of nightmares with several

Multiscale entropy analysis of electroencephalography during sleep in patients with Parkinson disease.

Sleep disorders are frequently seen in patients with Parkinson disease (PD), including rapid eye movement (REM) behavior disorder and periodic limb movement disorder. However, knowledge about changes in non-REM sleep in patients with PD is limited. This study explored the characteristics of electroencephalography (EEG) during sleep in patients with PD and non-PD controls. We further conducted multiscale entropy (MSE) analysis to evaluate and compare the complexity of sleep EEG for the 2 groups. There were 9 patients with PD (Hoehn-Yahr stage 1 or 2) and 11 non-PD controls. All participants und

Skeletal muscle ultrasound.

Muscle ultrasound is a convenient technique to visualize normal and pathological muscle tissue as it is non-invasive and real-time. Neuromuscular disorders give rise to structural muscle changes that can be visualized with ultrasound: atrophy can be objectified by measuring muscle thickness, while infiltration of fat and fibrous tissue increases muscle echo intensity, i.e. the muscles become whiter on the ultrasound image. Muscle echo intensity needs to be quantified to correct for age-related increase in echo intensity and differences between individual muscles. This can be done by gray scale
