Use of demineralized bone implants in orbital and craniofacial reconstruction and a review of the literature.

A retrospective study and review of the literature was performed on the use of demineralized bone implants for the correction of orbital and craniofacial defects. Demineralized bone implants heal by endochondral osteogenesis, inducing a transformation of local cells, as well as by osteoconduction, similar to autogenous grafts. They induce the chemotaxis and transformation of mesenchymal cells into chondroblasts, followed by ossification. They also act as a scaffold, with bone resorption taking place simultaneous with bone formation. This study reviewed 21 patients and 31 orbits, in which demin

Post-traumatic squamous-cell carcinoma.

Between January 1, 1976, and January 1, 1986, we treated sixty-three patients who had histologically proved squamous-cell carcinoma that originated in a pre-existing scar or sinus of an extremity. In 49 per cent of the patients, metastases to regional lymph nodes either were present when the patient was first seen or subsequently developed. The age and sex of the patient, the etiology of the original scar, and the duration of illness bore no relationship to the result. The most significant factor in predicting the outcome was the grade of the tumor: for grade-I (low-grade) lesions, the inciden

The role of exercise in enhancing brain and cerebrovascular health via the bone-brain axis: implications for surgical and clinical interventions.

UNLABELLED: The bone–brain axis constitutes an interactive bidirectional signaling network integrating skeletal, neural, and muscular systems, serving critical functions across both normal physiological operations and disease mechanisms. Exercise, a non-pharmacological intervention, significantly influences this axis by enhancing bone-derived factors like osteocalcin, which in turn affect cognitive function, neuroplasticity, and systemic metabolism. This review delves into the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the bone–brain axis, with a particular focus on exercise-induced pathways

Optimizing Noninvasive Vagus Nerve Stimulation for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Protocol for a Multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Systemic lupus erythematosus is a chronic, multisystem, inflammatory disease of autoimmune etiology occurring predominantly in women. A major hurdle to the diagnosis, treatment, and therapeutic advancement of this disease is its heterogeneous nature, which presents as a wide range of symptoms such as fatigue, fever, musculoskeletal involvement, neuropsychiatric disorders, and cardiovascular involvement with varying severity. The current therapeutic approach to this disease includes the administration of immunomodulatory drugs that may produce unfavorable secondary effects. OBJECTI

Clinical and immunological characteristics of 150 systemic lupus erythematosus patients in Jamaica: a comparative analysis.

Background Epidemiological studies in systemic lupus erythematosus have been reported in the literature in many countries and ethnic groups. Although systemic lupus erythematosus in Jamaica has been described in the past, there has not been a detailed evaluation of systemic lupus erythematosus patients in urban Jamaica, a largely Afro-Caribbean population. The goal of this study was to describe the clinical features, particularly disease activity, damage index and immunological features, of 150 systemic lupus erythematosus subjects. Methods 150 adult patients (≥18 years) followed in rheumatolo

Decision-centered wearable biosensors for personalized rehabilitation: integrating multimodal monitoring, artificial intelligence, and closed-loop intervention.

Personalized rehabilitation requires repeated assessment of movement, physiological tolerance, fatigue, and adherence, yet conventional clinic-based measurements provide only intermittent snapshots. The convergence of wearable biosensors with artificial intelligence, edge-cloud computing, and connected data infrastructures creates an opportunity to convert continuous multimodal signals into timely rehabilitation decisions. This critical narrative review synthesizes physiological, biochemical, electrophysiological, biomechanical, and behavioral sensing within a monitoring-interpretation-feedbac

Complexation of the Antineoplastic Docetaxel with γ‑Cyclodextrin Significantly Improves Its Solubility and In Vitro Safety.

Docetaxel (DTX) is a frontline taxane for breast cancer, but its poor aqueous solubility, limited intestinal permeability, and rapid clearance compromise therapeutic efficacy. Moreover, the commercial formulation Taxotere induces severe side effects, including hypersensitivity reactions, neutropenia, neuropathy, musculoskeletal toxicity, and nasolacrimal duct stenosis. Here, we investigated γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) complexation as a strategy to enhance DTX performance. A DTX:γ-CD inclusion complex was obtained by cosolubilization and lyophilization, reaching equilibrium within 5 h at 25 °C, with

The relationship between clinical outcomes and gait biomechanics in individuals with plantar fasciitis.

INTRODUCTION: Plantar fasciitis (PF) is a common musculoskeletal disorder characterized by heel pain that disrupts gait and daily function. This study examined relationships between clinical outcomes and gait biomechanics, determined whether these relationships differ between recent- and chronic-onset cases, and identified key clinical predictors of gait speed. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 42 individuals with PF. Clinical outcomes included worst pain, normalized gastrocnemius and soleus muscle length, normalized lower limb muscle strength, and normalized dynamic balance

Integrating plastinate-derived three-dimensional scans into computer-based anatomy practical examinations.

Anatomy instruction increasingly incorporates three-dimensional (3D) digital resources; however, the assessment of practical anatomy knowledge often relies on two-dimensional (2D) images. This misalignment may limit the authenticity of computer-based anatomy practical examinations (APEs). We implemented 3D scans of plastinated human specimens in APEs and examined student usage patterns and perceptions. High-resolution 3D scans of plastinated specimens were embedded into APE items. Fifteen anatomy practical questions were analyzed across three consecutive cohorts of first-year medical students.

Validation of American College of Radiology Bone Reporting and Data System (ACR Bone-RADS) for risk stratification of bone tumuors on computed tomography.

AIM: Neoplastic bone lesions show huge divergence. Accurate diagnosis is mandatory for optimal management. Computed tomography (CT) is of special importance in characterisation of bone tumuors, especially in complex anatomical areas and the axial skeleton. This study aimed to test the validity of applying American College of Radiology (ACR) Bone Reporting and Data System (Bone-RADS) in interpreting bony lesions on CT to gain evidence supporting its implementation as a standard in reporting and communication with orthopaedic surgeons. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study involved 33

Assessment of Dog-Leash Pulling Force and the Impact of Dog-Walking on Gait Kinematics.

PURPOSE: 1) Characterize the magnitude and consistency of dog-leash tension during routine walks in an at-home setting and 2) determine the effects of walking with a dog on-leash on gait intensity and variability. METHODS: A wireless system was designed to simultaneously measure dog-leash tension and gait kinematics. Twenty human subjects took their dog for one routine walk in their home environment and repeated the same walk without their dog for comparison. Peak force and peak loading rate were computed during periods of non-gait and during each stride and characterized using standard stati

Knowledge-practice gap in cardiovascular vital sign assessment and its influence on clinical decision-making among outpatient physical therapists in Saudi Arabia: A national cross-sectional study.

Cardiovascular screening through blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) assessment is a fundamental component of safe outpatient physical therapy practice. However, the extent to which such assessments influence clinical decision-making remains unclear. To evaluate the association between cardiovascular vital sign knowledge, routine assessment practice, and clinical decision-making among outpatient physical therapists in Saudi Arabia, and to identify perceived barriers to routine monitoring. A national cross-sectional survey was conducted among 404 licensed outpatient physical therapists. The

Monopolar Capacitive-Resistive Radiofrequency for Pelvic Floor Hypertonia and Vaginismus: A Case Series.

Pelvic floor hypertonia is an important musculoskeletal contributor to chronic pelvic pain and may be associated with genito-pelvic pain/penetration disorders, including vaginismus. We describe a prospective case series of three women aged 31, 32, and 45 years with pelvic floor hypertonia and vaginismus who underwent six weekly treatment sessions using a monopolar capacitive-resistive radiofrequency device (C200; Capenergy Medical, S.L., Sant Joan Despí, Barcelona, Spain). Each session consisted of a 20-minute intracavitary application using the MJS (Medical Jet System) handpiece combined with

Kinematic and motor coordination of the inner and outer limb in running while turning.

INTRODUCTION/PURPOSE: Curved running presents specific mechanical demands on the musculoskeletal system and relies on a multi-level coordination of the lower limb to regulate efficient and precise movements. When a subject runs on a curve, the velocity of the body's centre of mass must be deflected laterally and the body must rotate along a vertical axis to match its orientation to the new direction of movement. This study observed the joint and neuromuscular coordination adjustments of the inner and outer limbs during curved running and its comparison to straight-line running. We supported th…

Immune-related adverse events with mogamulizumab in cutaneous T-cell lymphoma: A multicentre study.

BACKGROUND: Mogamulizumab, an anti-CCR4 monoclonal antibody used in advanced mycosis fungoides (MF) and Sezary syndrome (SS), also depletes regulatory T cells, potentially leading to immune-related adverse events (irAEs). Unlike mogamulizumab-associated rash (MAR), other irAEs remain poorly documented to date. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of mogamulizumab-associated irAEs (excluding MAR), characterize their clinical profile and assess management strategies and outcome. METHODS: A retrospective nationwide multicentre survey was conducted using the French Study Group on Cutaneous Lym
