A retrospective analysis of 176 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue has been reported. The tongue base and mobile tongue, believed to behave as two clinically distinct anatomic areas, have been compared and contrasted. Women comprised 25 percent of the patients with tumors of the base of the tongue and 45 percent of those with mobile tongue lesions, an increase over previous reports for both locations. We reviewed 250 patients with carcinoma of the lip who were treated with radiation therapy during a 30-year period. Although radiation techniques underwent continued refinement, the radiation dose delivered to the tumor remained relatively constant. Nearly all tumors were squamous cell carcinoma (247/250) and located on the lower lip (240/250). Only 9% initially manifested lymph node metastases. The median survival was 13.8 years. OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Since 1992, endovascular techniques for vascular occlusion and stenting have evolved significantly. Endovascular occlusion of the carotid artery has been used in the management of carotid "blowout." Although it seems logical to expand this application to the use of arterial stents to repair rather than occlude the artery when cerebral cross-circulation is inadequate, concerns remain regarding the placement of a foreign body in a contaminated field. The purpose of the present report is to describe our experience with endovascular stents for control of carotid hemorrhage.

We describe a case of thyroid carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation with tracheal invasion. The malignant tumor was managed by refined spiral tracheoplasty after tangential resection of the trachea. At 8 months after the surgery, computed tomography and bronchoscopy showed no tumor recurrence or tracheal stenosis.

Chemoradiation is increasingly being used to treat locally advanced head and neck carcinomas. Possible rare complications of this treatment modality have begun to appear, as the number of treated patients increase. In this report, we present a case who underwent chemoradiation due to T3N3M0 tonsil cancer and developed necrotizing fasciitis of the neck at seven months following treatment. The patient recovered fully after treatment with surgical debridement with pectoralis major flap reconstruction and intravenous antibiotherapy.
