Ants are capable of learning long visually guided foraging routes with limited neural resources. The visual scene memory needed for this behaviour is mediated by the mushroom bodies; an insect brain region important for learning and memory. In a visual navigation context, the mushroom bodies are theorised to act as familiarity detectors, guiding ants to views that are similar to those previously learned when first travelling along a foraging route. Evidence from behavioural experiments, computational studies and brain lesions all support this idea. Here we further investigate the role of mushr

Hearing impairment is a cardinal feature of Down syndrome (DS), but its clinical manifestations have been attributed to multiple factors. Murine models could provide mechanistic insights on various causes of hearing loss in DS. To investigate mechanisms of hearing loss in DS in the absence of the cadherin 23 mutation, we backcrossed our DS mice, Dp(16)1Yey, onto normal-hearing CBA/J mice and evaluated their auditory function. Body weights of wild type (WT) and DS mice were similar at 3-months of age, but at 9-months, WT weighed 30% more than DS mice. Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (D

Autism spectrum disorders are associated with social and emotional deficits, the aetiology of which are not well understood. A growing consensus is that the autonomic nervous system serves a key role in emotional processes, by providing physiological signals essential to subjective states. We hypothesized that altered autonomic processing is related to the socio-emotional deficits in autism spectrum disorders. Here, we investigated the relationship between non-specific skin conductance response, an objective index of sympathetic neural activity, and brain fluctuations during rest in high-funct

OBJECTIVE: Investigating the anatomical connections between cervical sympathetic ganglia and spinal ganglia in rabbits and assessing the role of Neuropeptide Y in the pathogenesis of cervical vertigo.
METHOD: Part 1: 32 adult healthy male New Zealand white rabbits (whose skin is very sensitive, so rabbits are generally used for stimulation experiments) were randomly divided into the upper cervical sympathetic ganglia (SCSG) stimulation group and the lower cervical sympathetic ganglia (ICSG) stimulation group, with 16 rabbits in each group. The two groups were divided into an experimental grou

BACKGROUND: Examination of cochlear and neural potentials is necessary to assess sensory and neural status in infants, especially those cared for in neonatal intensive care units (NICU) who have high rates of hyperbilirubinemia and thus are at risk for auditory neuropathy (AN).
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether recording parameters commonly used in click-evoked auditory brain stem response (ABR) are useful for recording cochlear microphonic (CM) and Wave I in infants at risk for AN. Specifically, we analyzed CM, summating potential (SP), and Waves I, III, and V. The

1. The effect of papaverine, a well known smooth muscle relaxant, was investigated on neural transmission within the enteric nervous system. Segments of guinea-pig ileum were placed in a partitioned bath to enable drugs, including papaverine, to be applied to enteric nerve pathways without interfering with the recording of the smooth muscle contraction. Ascending excitatory enteric nerve pathways were activated by electrical field stimulation in the anal compartment (10 Hz for 2 s, 45 mA, 0.5 ms pulse duration) and the resulting contraction of the intestinal circular muscle in the oral compart

OBJECTIVE: Prenatal surgical interventions for neural tube defects have been shown to improve fetal outcomes but are associated with previously poorly quantified maternal risk, which is inherently dependent on the surgical approach used. We hypothesized that a meta-analysis would enable objective quantitation of maternal risk and safety, stratified by which antenatal neural tube defect surgical approaches were employed.
STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a meta-analysis by searching PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science databases. We included all studies that performed prenatal intrauterine neur

We evaluate a three-dimensional (3D) object detection system for operation in turbid water based on 3D profilometric Integral Imaging (InIm) and a deep neural network. While conventional InIm computational reconstruction provides the two-dimensional (2D) slices of the 3D scene at specific 2D depth planes, 3D profilometry allows visualization of the 3D surface from unique perspectives. In the proposed method, we develop a deep neural network-based red, green, blue-depth (RGB-D) object detection framework using passive 3D profilometry under turbid conditions. Bioelectronic implants for brain stimulation are widely used to treat neurological disorders and promote neuronal repair; however, their clinical application is limited by invasive surgical implantation. To address this challenge, here, platelet membrane-decorated gold yarnballs double as a brain antenna and a miniaturized chemo-electrical reactor for neuron electric stimulus and gas-controlled release in traumatic brain injury (TBI). The platform consists of a nitric oxide (NO) donor-functionalized platelet membrane (PMNO) conjugated onto a gold yarnball nanoparticle (GNP). Upon exposure to a

Diabetic neuropathy (DN) is the most common complication of diabetes mellitus (DM) and often involves the cornea, where progressive loss of nerve fibers contributes to impaired corneal sensitivity and wound healing defects. Current treatments are limited, underscoring the need for a regenerative therapy. Here we show that a non-invasive neural modulation therapy, transcutaneous electrical stimulation (ES), significantly restore the nerve density and sensory function in both streptozotocin-induced DM mice and in vitro isolated trigeminal ganglia (TG) neurons. Depression is a serious mental and psychological disorder, characterized by a high incidence rate, high disability rate and high recurrence rate. It is a major problem that urgently needs to be solved in the field of global public health. Circadian rhythms regulate various physiological and behavioral processes in the human body. Previous studies have shown that there is a close connection between circadian rhythmicity and depression. Factors such as shift work, jet lag, social jet lag, chronotypes, and light at night exposure are all related to the occurrence and development of depression. An

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), characterized by complete or partial airway obstruction during sleep, affects approximately 38% of the adult population. The clinical diagnosis of OSA is typically conducted using polysomnography (PSG), which has been reported to be cumbersome, requires technical expertise, and involves long waitlists. Consequently, alternative methods, such as questionnaires, have gained attention in recent years. However, while these methods are highly sensitive, they suffer from low specificity. Speech-based screening has emerged as an accessible alternative and has been widel

BACKGROUND: In schizophrenia, episodic memory deficits are observed across verbal and visual memory tasks, as well as during free recall and recognition. Functional neuroimaging studies have revealed abnormalities in several brain regions, though findings have often been inconsistent. To resolve these discrepancies, we conducted a meta-analysis to provide an updated understanding of the neural mechanisms involved in episodic memory deficits in schizophrenia.
METHODS: The meta-analysis included 59 functional neuroimaging studies using episodic memory tasks in schizophrenia.
RESULTS: The analy

How consciousness is lost in states such as sleep or anesthesia remains a mystery. To gain insight into this phenomenon, concurrent recordings of electrophysiology signals in the anterior cingulate cortex and whole-brain functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) are conducted in rats exposed to graded propofol, undergoing the transition from consciousness to unconsciousness. The results reveal that upon the loss of consciousness (LOC), there is a sharp increase in low-frequency power of the electrophysiological signal. Additionally, fMRI signals exhibit a cascade of deactivation across a pa

The aim of the study is to create an in-silico test bed, which allows to replicate clinical scenarios using a virtual wrist model that encompasses both neural and musculoskeletal components along with implants. We used four wrist models: damaged FPL muscle; healthy FPL muscle; tendon-transfer surgery model with FPL latched to BRD muscle; and pulley-based surgery model with an implanted pulley over tendon-transfer model. These models were used for analyzing surgical cases and musculoskeletal biomechanics. This was developed on NEUROiD platform, simulating neural and musculoskeletal systems usin

Many approaches inspired by brain science have been proposed for robotic control, specifically targeting situations where knowledge of the dynamic model is unavailable. This is crucial because dynamic model inaccuracies and variations can occur during the robot's operation. In this paper, inspired by the central nervous system (CNS), we present a CNS-based Biomimetic Motor Control (CBMC) approach consisting of four modules. The first module consists of a cerebellum-like spiking neural network that employs spiking timing-dependent plasticity to learn the dynamics mechanisms and adjust the synap

Understanding the neural basis for individual differences in the skin conductance response (SCR) during discriminative fear conditioning may inform on our understanding of autonomic regulation in fear-related psychopathology. Previous region-of-interest (ROI) analyses have implicated the amygdala in regulating conditioned SCR, but whole brain analyses are lacking. This study examined correlations between individual differences in SCR during discriminative fear conditioning to social stimuli and neural activity throughout the brain, by using data from a large functional magnetic resonance imagi

This article reviews the effects of chronic fluorosis on the brain and possible mechanisms. We used PubMed, Medline and Cochraine databases to collect data on fluorosis, brain injury, and pathogenesis. A large number of in vivo and in vitro studies and epidemiological investigations have found that chronic fluorosis can cause brain damage, resulting in abnormal brain structure and brain function.Chronic fluorosis not only causes a decline in concentration, learning, and memory, but also has mental symptoms such as anxiety, tension, and depression. Several possible mechanisms that have been pro
