INTRODUCTION: The incidence of ipsilateral neck of femur fracture with the shaft of femur going for non-union is not known. Management of this concomitant non-union can be a daunting task in terms of fixation strategy and its outcome.
CASE REPORT: In this article, we report a case of a 25-year-old male with ipsilateral neck of femur with shaft non-union. We have done open reduction and dual plating with bone grafting for the shaft of the femur followed by valgus subtrochanteric osteotomy with dynamic hip screw and impaction bone grafting for the neck of femur non-union.
CONCLUSION: The main

The main characteristic feature of the pediatric mandible is that of decreased dimension, which leads to compromises in the open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). In the dental segment, the cervically bulbous short stature primary teeth might act an obstacle during the maxillomandibular fixation conventionally. An increased osteogenic potential of bones favors rapid consolidation and remodeling in the affected region. The mixed dentition of the ugly duckling stage adds more burden while stabilizing the fractured segments. The main goal of the clinician is to achieve and restore the facia

Post-traumatic arthrosis is a common problem following tibial plateau fractures. Computed tomography (CT) with 3D reconstruction is essential in facilitating accurate analysis of the fracture type and depth of compression, but is typically only available pre- or postoperatively. Special reconstruction software tools, based on 3D imaging, have been developed. Limiting factors include a lengthy preoperative planning phase. This study assessed a specific type of navigation software, which is currently in use in maxillofacial surgery, to establish whether it might play a critical role in orthopaed

BACKGROUND: Although clinical trials have successfully applied microplates for the internal fixation of single or double isolated mandibular fractures, the use of microplate systems in comminuted mandibular fractures is not widely accepted. This study aimed to evaluate the use of microplates for internal fixation of comminuted mandible fractures and to discuss their applicability.
METHODS: Fourteen patients with comminuted mandibular fractures (10 at a single region, 3 at 2 regions, and 1 at 4 regions) were treated with open reduction and internal fixation using 0.5- or 0.6-mm-thick titanium

OBJECTIVE: The treatment of comminuted mandibular fractures is challenging due to the severity of associated injuries and the need for a careful diagnosis with adequate treatment planning. Recently, open reduction and stable internal fixation (OR-IF) with a load-bearing reconstruction plate have been advocated for reliable clinical outcomes with minimal complications. This clinical prospective study evaluated OR-IF in the surgical management of comminuted mandibular fractures with a new low-profile, thin, mandibular locking reconstruction plate.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prospectively assesse

Acute traumatic spondylolisthesis at L5-S1 level is a rare condition, almost exclusively the result of major trauma, frequently associated with transverse process fractures and severe neurologic deficits. Recently, open reduction and internal fixation with posterior stabilization has been the method of treatment most frequently reported. We report a rare case of traumatic L5-S1 pondylolisthesis with a unilateral facet locking with a review of literatures.

Displaced intra-articular fractures of the metacarpal head and of the proximal articular surface of the proximal phalanx often require open reduction and internal fixation, particularly if an articular step off is present. If secure internal fixation can be achieved, early motion may be instituted. Diagnosis may be facilitated by special views and tomography. Secondary reconstructive procedures may include tenolysis, osteotomy, arthroplasty, or tissue transfer from the foot.

BACKGROUND: Poplital artery transection injury is potentially catastrophic, or even life-threatening. Severe traumas, including open fracture, gunshot, stabs, and knee dislocation and complex fracture of proximal tibia or distal femur, are the common causes of high rate of amputation due to popliteal artery trauma. No report mentions vascular injury associated with minimally displaced tibial plateau fracture in adult.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 30-year-old male presented with popliteal artery transection injury associated with minimally displaced tibial plateau fracture. He presented to emergency d

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the proximal phalanges of the fingers are common injuries in children and adolescents. The majority can be treated by closed reduction and splinting, and complications are rare. The purpose of the prospective study was to document the results of functional-conservative treatment of extra-articular physeal fractures using either a functional forearm cast or the Lucerne Cast (LuCa).
METHODS: Clinical and radiographic results of 13 pediatric patients having 13 extra-articular physeal fractures (e.g., juxta-epiphyseal fractures, Salter-Harris type I or II physeal fracture

Mandibular angle fractures have the greatest recorded rate of postoperative complications of any mandibular location and hence they present an especially difficult task for surgeons. Therefore, it is of interest to compare the conventional miniplates and three dimensional (3D) plates in management of mandibular angle fracture and body fractures.60 patients with isolated non-comminuted mandibular angle fractures and body fractures were randomly assigned into two groups by lottery. Utilizing Champy's osteosynthesis standards, group one (n = 30) received treatment with 2-mm standard miniplate and

Clavicle midshaft fractures are mostly treated surgically by open internal reduction with a superior or anteroinferior plate and screws or by intramedullary nailing. Screw positioning plays a critical role in determining the stress distribution. There is a lack of data on the screw position and the appropriate number of cortices required for plate fixation. The aim of this study is to evaluate the mechanical behavior of an anterior plate implanted in a fractured bone subjected to 120° of lateral elevation compared to a healthy clavicle using numerical simulations. Fixation materials used in the surgical treatment of subcondylar fractures contribute to successful clinical outcomes. In this study, we simulated the mechanical properties of four fixation materials [titanium (Ti), magnesium alloy (Mg alloy), poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), and hydroxyapatite/poly-L-lactide (HA-PLLA)] in a finite-element analysis model of subcondylar fracture. Two four-hole plates were fixed on the anterior and posterior surfaces of the subcondyle of the mandible. In the simulation model of a subcondylar fracture, we evaluated the stress distribution and mechanical deformation of

Displaced calcaneus fracture often results in severe permanent sequelae and considerably limits the activities of daily living. In this prospective cohort study we present the outcomes of surgical treatment of 137 displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures, over 8y period. Follow-up data were obtained up to 3 years post-operatively. Post-operative function was assessed by scoring systems - Creighton-Nebraska Health Foundation Assessment Scale (C-N score) and Ankle-Hindfoot Scale AOFAS (A-H score) and radiographic assessment revealed the accuracy of the position. According to our experience

Intramedullary nailing is the standard procedure for surgical treatment of closed and Gustilo-Anderson Grade I-II° open fractures of the tibial shaft. The use of intramedullary nailing for the treatment of proximal metaphyseal tibia fractures is frequently followed by postoperative malalignment, whereas plate osteosynthesis is associated with higher rates of postoperative infection. Intramedullary nailing of tibial fractures is generally performed through an infrapatellar approach. The injured extremity must be positioned at a minimum of 90° of flexion in the knee joint to achieve optimal expo

Ankle fractures in patients with diabetes mellitus have long been recognized as a challenge to practicing clinicians. Complications of impaired wound healing, infection, malunion, delayed union, nonunion, and Charcot arthropathy are prevalent in this patient population. Controversy exists as to whether diabetic ankle fractures are best treated noninvasively or by open reduction and internal fixation. Patients with diabetes are at significant risk for soft-tissue complications. In addition, diabetic ankle fractures heal, but significant delays in bone healing exist. Also, Charcot ankle arthropa

Combined internal and external fixation for distal radius fractures has been previously reported, but the indications, technique, and results are not defined. This study reviews an experience with a specific surgical strategy for the treatment of a homogeneous population of AO-C3 fractures of the distal radius. The technique is composed of combined palmar and dorsal surgical approaches for open reduction and internal fixation of fracture fragments after neutralizing the wrist with a rigid external fixator. Thirteen fractures in 12 patients were followed an average of 27 months. Wrist motion av
