The effect of a pilot brief educational intervention on preferences regarding treatments for opioid use disorder.

PURPOSE: Negative perceptions around medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) amongst the public could deter patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) from engaging with MOUD. Thus, we evaluated whether a brief intervention could improve preferences for MOUD in people who may or may not use opioids. METHODS: We employed a pre-post design to assess the effect of a brief educational intervention on preferences for methadone, buprenorphine, naltrexone, and non-medication treatment in an online sample of US adults stratified by race, who may or may not use opioids. Respondents ranked their prefer

Activated clotting time-guided heparinization during open AAA surgery: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Arterial thrombo-embolic complications (TEC) are still common during and after non-cardiac arterial procedures (NCAP). While unfractionated heparin has been used during NCAP for more than 70 years to prevent TEC, there is no consensus regarding the optimal dosing strategy. The aim of this pilot study was to test the effectiveness and feasibility of an activated clotting time (ACT)-guided heparinization protocol during open abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) surgery, in anticipation of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) investigating if ACT-guided heparinization leads to better clinic

Developmental Dyslexia: Insights from EEG-Based Findings and Molecular Signatures-A Pilot Study.

Developmental dyslexia (DD) is a learning disorder. Although risk genes have been identified, environmental factors, and particularly stress arising from constant difficulties, have been associated with the occurrence of DD by affecting brain plasticity and function, especially during critical neurodevelopmental stages. In this work, electroencephalogram (EEG) findings were coupled with the genetic and epigenetic molecular signatures of individuals with DD and matched controls. Specifically, we investigated the genetic and epigenetic correlates of key stress-associated genes (NR3C1, NR3C2, FKB

Impaction-based exhaled breath sampling for substance monitoring: a prospective pilot study (Drugxhale).

For decades, intake monitoring of drugs using urine as the matrix of choice is the gold standard in drug treatment centers. A properly conducted urine drug test can identify recent use of prescribed, non-prescribed and illicit drugs. However, issues like adulteration, substitution and privacy issues have driven the search for alternative matrices. This prospective pilot study evaluates the use of an impaction-based breath sampling device, Breath Explor®, as an alternative to traditional urine-based drug monitoring. Breath samples were analyzed using a validated 32-component liquid chromatograp

Sirolimus for the treatment of patients with refractory connective tissue disease-related thrombocytopenia: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: CTD-related immune thrombocytopenia (CTD-ITP) represents an unmet medical need because the drugs that are available are only partly effective and have considerable side-effects. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of sirolimus in refractory CTD-ITP patients. METHODS: We did a single-arm, open-label, pilot study of sirolimus in patients with CTD-ITP unresponsive to, or intolerant of, conventional medications. Patients received oral sirolimus for 6 months at a starting dose of 0.5-1 mg per day, with dose adjusted according to tolerance and to maintain a therap

Using learning-by-concordance to develop reasoning in epistaxis management with online feedback: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Epistaxis is a recurring cause for referral to emergency departments. Its management can be complex; hence, it is critical to provide appropriate support to Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (OHNS) residents to develop clinical reasoning skills to manage such cases. Learning-by-Concordance (LbC) is a recently developed educational tool that encourages learners to think through simulated clinical scenarios. A panel of ENTs provides insightful feedback to residents, reflecting a diversity of opinions about practice. Our study aimed to assess LbC's feasibility and perceived value f

A new grading assessment of eosinophilic esophagitis using red dichromatic imaging: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The endoscopic reference score using white-light imaging (WLI) is utilized for objectively evaluating the severity of findings in patients with eosinophilic esophagitis. A novel image-enhanced endoscopy technique, red dichromatic imaging (RDI), can visualize deeper vessels in the GI tract, which may assess edema more precisely than WLI. METHODS: A total of 21 consecutive patients with eosinophilic esophagitis were prospectively evaluated. Patients were categorized according to 3 grades based on the visibility of vessels with RDI. Clinical features, such as peak eosinophil

Evaluation of renal sodium handling in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction: A pilot study.

The pathophysiology behind sodium retention in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) remains poorly understood. We hypothesized that patients with HFpEF have impaired natriuresis and diuresis in response to volume expansion and diuretic challenge, which is associated with renal hypo-responsiveness to endogenous natriuretic peptides. Nine HFpEF patients and five controls received saline infusion (0.25 mL/kg/min for 60 min) followed by intravenous furosemide (20 mg or home dose) 2 h after the infusion. Blood and urine samples were collected at baseline, 2 h after saline infusion

Feasibility and Accuracy of Ultrasound-Guided Core Needle Biopsy for Nipple Lesions: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Due to the superficial location, suspicious findings of the nipple-areolar complex (NAC) are not amenable to stereotactic or MRI-guided sampling and have historically necessitated surgical biopsy or skin-punch biopsy. There are limited reports of US-guided core biopsy of the nipple (US-CBN). OBJECTIVE: We report our nearly 3-year pilot experience with US-CBN at an academic breast imaging center. METHODS: An institutional review board-exempt and HIPAA-compliant retrospective review was performed. We assessed patient demographics, breast imaging characteristics, procedural data, pa

Noninvasive and Reliable Quantification of Anteromedial Rotatory Knee Laxity: A Pilot Study on Healthy Individuals.

BACKGROUND: Anteromedial rotatory instability (AMRI) of the knee is a complex and severe condition caused by injury to the anterior cruciate ligament and/or the medial collateral ligament. Clinical studies dealing with AMRI are rare, and objective measurements are nonexistent. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The objectives of this study were, first, to quantify anteromedial rotatory knee laxity in healthy individuals using a noninvasive image analysis software and, second, to assess intra- and interrater reliability and equivalence in measuring anteromedial knee translation (AMT). It was hypothesized tha

Implementing virtual reality technology to teach medical college systemic anatomy: A pilot study.

It can be difficult for some students to learn three-dimensional anatomical structure concepts. While virtual reality (VR) systems have been reported as helpful for learning, there has been scarce research on either VR teaching strategies or the influence of visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) in the context of large anatomy classes (i.e., over 100 students). The study thus aimed to (1) establish a VR anatomy instruction video for a large class; (2) determine how many students experience VIMS when watching a VR anatomy instruction video; (3) evaluate the influence of VIMS on VR anatomy vid

A Multicenter Pilot Study of Biliary Atresia Screening Using Digital Stool Color Imaging.

PURPOSE: The presence of alcoholic stool in biliary atresia (BA) patients is the basis of a stool color card (SCC), a screening tool that has led to more patients receiving Kasai portoenterostomy earlier. This study aimed to evaluate the color image processing of stool images captured using smartphones. We propose that measuring digital color parameters is a more objective method for identifying BA stools and may improve the sensitivity of BA screening. METHODS: A prospective study was conducted in five hospitals in Thailand between October 1, 2020, and December 31, 2021. Stools from infants

Genome-wide methylation analysis in patients with proximal hypospadias - a pilot study and review of the literature.

In patients with proximal hypospadias, often no genetic cause is identified despite extensive genetic testing. Many genes involved in sex development encode transcription factors with strict timing and dosing of the gene products. We hypothesised that there might be recurrent differences in DNA methylation in boys with hypospadias and that these might differ between patients born small versus appropriate for gestational age. Genome-wide Methylated DNA sequencing (MeD-seq) was performed on 32bp LpnPI restriction enzyme fragments after RE-digestion in leucocytes from 16 XY boys with unexplained

Intracerebral electrographic activity following a single dose of diazepam nasal spray: A pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Rescue benzodiazepine medication can be used to treat seizure clusters, which are intermittent, stereotypic episodes of frequent seizure activity that are distinct from a patient's usual seizure pattern. The NeuroPace RNS® System is a device that detects abnormal electrographic activity through intracranial electrodes and administers electrical stimulation to control seizures. Reductions in electrographic activity over days to weeks have been associated with the longer-term efficacy of daily antiseizure medications (ASMs). In this pilot study, electrographic activity over hours to d
