Climatic drivers of the 2024 malaria outbreak in two neighbouring districts in northeastern India and its corridor: The indirect role of El Niño.

BACKGROUND: Despite the progress made, malaria continues to impose a major global and regional burden. India contributes to almost half of the malaria cases in South-East Asia. In 2024, an unusual increase in malaria cases was observed in Alipurduar and neighbouring Kokrajhar district in Northeast India; regions that had maintained an API below 1 for several years. Thus, understanding the climatic and environmental factors of this outbreak is critical for early detection and prevention. METHODS: Monthly epidemiological data on confirmed malaria cases in both districts were analysed from 2018

tRF-1-ArgTCG-1-1 promotes renal fibrosis by regulating β-catenin.

BACKGROUND: Renal fibrosis (RF) is a crucial pathological factor in the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) to end-stage renal failure. The role of noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) in CKD has been researched recently. tRNA-derived fragments (tRFs) constitute a class of small ncRNAs originating from tRNAs. To date, the function of tRFs in RF remains unexplored. METHODS: Human small RNA microarray analysis was performed to identify dysregulated tRFs in urine-derived renal tubular epithelial cells from patients with RF. RT-PCR was used for validation in clinical samples. Hydroxylamine-mediated pr

AI-assisted versus manual sustainability assessment of a high-throughput LC-MS/MS method for psychotropic and OTC drugs of abuse in human plasma.

A rapid, sensitive, and selective LC-MSMS method was developed and validated for the quantification of dextromethorphan (DXM), pseudoephedrine (PSE), olanzapine (OLA), and fluoxetine (FLU) in human plasma. Mixture 1 (DXM/PSE) and mixture 2 (OLA/FLU) are fixed-dose combinations commonly misused at high doses for their euphoric effects. The proposed method employed a simple protein precipitation technique for sample preparation, using a cost-effective cross-over internal standard strategy; OLA for mixture 1 and DXM for mixture 2. Chromatographic separation was achieved on a Hypersil GOLD column

Environmental-demographic determinants associated with tuberculosis prevalence in seven African countries: an aggregated dataset analysis.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge about environmental and demographic determinants of tuberculosis is largely limited to studies with ecological designs. We explored the association between these determinants and tuberculosis prevalence in an individual participant dataset aggregated across seven African countries. METHODS: Data of nationally representative tuberculosis prevalence surveys (2012-2019) from highly endemic countries were supplemented with publicly accessible data at district level. Associations between individual-level diagnosis of bacteriologically confirmed tuberculosis and district-level

Partial Weight-Bearing after Lower Extremity Surgery: A Review of Current Standards, Innovations, and Patient Compliance.

Partial weight bearing (PWB) is a cornerstone of post-operative rehabilitation after lower extremity surgery (LES), balancing mechanical stimulation needed for bone, tendon, and cartilage healing with protection against excessive load that precipitates malunion, non-union, or joint dehiscence. This narrative review synthesizes literature to clarify current indications for PWB, evaluate traditional and emerging methods for prescribing and monitoring load, and identify factors influencing patient adherence. Hip, knee, ankle, and foot procedures commonly warrant PWB, yet optimal targets and progr

Fatal Non-Hepatic Hyperammonemia Post-Glofitamab: Ureaplasma and Genetic Susceptibility: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Although primarily reported in solid organ transplant recipients and patients undergoing chimeric antigen receptor T-cell immunotherapy (CAR-T), non-hepatic hyperammonemia (NHHA) is a rare but lethal complication in the broader context of post- chemo-immunotherapy hematologic malignancies. It often presents with unexplained encephalopathy that mimics primary central nervous system (CNS) progression, leading to diagnostic delays. With the expanding use of bispecific antibodies (e.g., glofitamab), the etiology of NHHA, particularly the complex interplay between opportunistic infectio

Intraventricular schwannoma presenting with memory impairment and full neurological recovery after surgical resection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Intraventricular schwannomas are exceptionally rare benign tumors, accounting for a minute fraction of intracranial schwannomas. Their occurrence within the lateral ventricle is particularly uncommon, and the clinical presentation is often nonspecific, posing significant diagnostic challenges. To date, only a limited number of cases have been reported worldwide. We present a rare case of a left lateral ventricular schwannoma manifesting predominantly as transient isolated memory impairment, an unusual presentation that broadens the recognized clinical spectrum of this entity. CASE

PAH-associated health risk from ultrafine particles: an urban field study.

Reteplase (Retavase) is a plasminogen activator, mimicking endogenous tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA), a serine protease, converting plasminogen to plasmin and thereby precipitating thrombolysis. It is a third-generation recombinant form of t-PA that operates in the presence of fibrin (i.e. it is fibrin specific). Reteplase can be administered as a bolus dose (nonweight-based), rather than an infusion, which promotes rapid and safe administration. The ease of administration of this reteplase dosage regimen (two 10U bolus doses, each over 2 minutes, 30 minutes apart) is conducive to prehosp

The combined effects of temperature and salinity on the stomatogastric nervous system of two species of decapod crustacea.

Nervous systems must maintain coordinated activity patterns despite perturbations from unstable environmental factors (e.g., temperature, pH, and salinity). Marine organisms experience daily and seasonal changes in temperature while precipitation and ocean currents alter sea water salinity. We examined how the stomatogastric nervous systems (STNSs) from two species of decapod crustaceans (Cancer borealis and Homarus americanus) were affected by altered temperature and salinity. We used the patterned activity of the pyloric rhythm to assay the tolerance of the STNS to these two perturbations, i

Wernicke encephalopathy in non-alcoholic patients following gastrointestinal procedures: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Wernicke encephalopathy (WE) is a serious neurological disorder often linked to alcohol use but can also occur under non-alcoholic conditions, particularly following gastrointestinal (GI) procedures. Existing reviews predominantly focus on bariatric surgery, leaving significant gaps regarding other major GI procedures. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to systematically review and synthesize evidence on the incidence, clinical characteristics, diagnostic methods, management strategies, and outcomes of WE in non-alcoholic adults following gastrointestinal procedures. METHODS: A PRISMA-c

Predicting current habitat suitability for intermediate snail hosts of urogenital and intestinal schistosomiasis in the Lower Shire Valley floodplain of southern Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Relating the geographical distribution of intermediate freshwater snail hosts (viz. vectors of schistosomes) to local environmental attributes offers value for understanding the epidemiological landscape of schistosomiasis transmission in a changing aquatic environment. Schistosomiasis-both urogenital and intestinal-causes significant human suffering, affecting approximately 240 million people globally and grouped within the neglected tropical disease (NTD) umbrella. This study addresses the following questions: 1. Where are the most suitable habitats for intermediate host snails i

Exosomes from Adipose Tissue Mesenchymal Stem Cells, a Preliminary Study for In Vitro and In Vivo Application.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), particularly their secreted exosomes, small microvesicles, represent a major focus in regenerative medicine due to their therapeutic potential. Exosomes exhibit growth factors and cytokines and are loaded with microRNAs (miRNA) and short interfering RNA (siRNA) that can be transferred to other cells, potentially affecting their function. Exosomes are crucial mediators of intercellular communication, are immunomodulatory, and are promoters of tissue regeneration. Despite their promise, the standardized methods for exosome isolation and characterization remain weak

Conceptual framework for tinnitus: a cognitive model in practice.

Tinnitus is a conscious attended awareness perception of sourceless sound. Widespread theoretical and evidence-based neurofunctional and psychological models have tried to explain tinnitus-related distress considering the influence of psychological and cognitive factors. However, tinnitus models seem to be less focused on causality, thereby easily misleading interpretations. Also, they may be incapable of individualization. This study proposes a Conceptual Cognitive Framework (CCF) providing insight into cognitive mechanisms involved in the predisposition, precipitation, and perpetuation of ti

The Impact of Intimate Partner Violence on Homelessness and Returns to Housing: A Qualitative Analysis From the California Statewide Study of People Experiencing Homelessness.

Homelessness is a public health concern in California and throughout the United States. Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a risk factor for experiencing homelessness. Few studies have examined the interplay between IPV, homelessness, and housing. Qualitative methods can provide a greater understanding of the lived experience of IPV and homelessness to identify potential solutions. We purposefully sampled 104 adults who reported experiencing IPV in the California Statewide Study of People Experiencing Homelessness (CASPEH), a representative, mixed-methods study. We administered semi-structured
