Deliberate self-harming application of superglue in the nose: case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Accidental and non-accidental applications of superglue in the ear, nose and oral cavity have been reported previously. Surgical removal of glue from the nose is the current practice. CASE REPORT: This paper reports the case of an 18-year-old female, who presented with complete bilateral nasal occlusion due to deliberate self-application of superglue in both nostrils to avoid nasogastric tube insertion. RESULTS: Removal of glue was accomplished with a combination of local anaesthetic cream and acetone-soaked cotton buds, which caused only minimal discomfort to the patient. All tr

ICD-Related Emergencies in Prehospital Care: A Descriptive Survey of Self-Reported Experience and Equipment Availability Among Polish Paramedics.

BACKGROUND: The number of patients with implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) is steadily increasing, making encounters with ICD-related emergencies more frequent in prehospital care. Paramedics are often the first healthcare professionals to manage these situations; however, data on their exposure to ICD-related emergencies and access to appropriate equipment remain limited. This study aimed to describe Polish paramedics' self-reported experience with ICD-related emergencies and the availability of ICD deactivation magnets in prehospital settings. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectio

Impact of fidget devices on anxiety and physiological responses in adults with ADHD.

BACKGROUND: Fidgeting devices are popular for managing ADHD, but their effectiveness remains unclear. This study investigated whether fidgeting modulates self-regulation in adults with ADHD during stress, exploring intrinsic versus extrinsic fidgeting with a fidget ball. We hypothesized that individuals with a fidget ball would demonstrate improved self-regulation under stress, reflected by higher heart rate variability (HRV) and lower anxiety levels. METHODS: Adults with ADHD were randomly assigned to a fidget ball (n = 49) or no fidget ball (n = 24) group. Physiological stress was measured

Well-being and self-care strategies for cardiovascular genetic counselors: A qualitative study.

Repeated exposure to challenging clinical situations impacts healthcare professionals' well-being. Genetic counselors assist individuals to understand and adapt to difficult medical information, which often has implications for close family members. In the cardiac setting, managing families with profound grief and trauma following sudden cardiac death can be difficult, with potential for burnout and compassion fatigue. The aim of this study was to explore the impact of cardiovascular genetic counseling practice on genetic counselor well-being and describe self-care practices. Participants were

Self-warming blankets versus active warming by forced-air devices for preventing hypothermia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Unintended perioperative hypothermia is a significant complication for patients undergoing anesthesia. Different measures are routinely undertaken to prevent hypothermia and its consequences. The evidence comparing the impact of self-warming blankets and forced-air warming is scarce. Therefore, this meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy of self-warming blankets compared to forced-air devices regarding the incidence of perioperative hypothermia. METHODS: We searched the Web of Science, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PubMed, and Scopus for relevant studies fr

Effect of 6 months' flash glucose monitoring in adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes and suboptimal glycaemic control: managing diabetes in a 'flash' randomised controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Teenagers and young adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D) experience significant burden managing this serious chronic condition and glycaemic control is at its unhealthiest during this life stage. Flash glucose monitoring (FGM) is a new technology that reduces the burden of glucose monitoring by easily and discreetly displaying glucose information when an interstitial glucose sensor worn on the upper arm is scanned with a handheld reader, as opposed to traditional capillary glucose sampling by finger prick (otherwise known as self-monitored blood glucose, SMBG). The effectiveness of th

A mixed-methods approach to understanding overdose risk-management strategies among a nationwide convenience sample.

BACKGROUND: This mixed-methods study compared drug use histories between individuals who had a reported non-fatal overdose to individuals who did not and described the overdose risk-management strategies as they were experienced by a sample of people who use drugs (PWUD). Shifts from non-medical prescription opioid use (NMPOU) to the use of heroin and synthetic opioids have been implicated in national increases in overdose incidences in the United States. However, relatively limited data exists regarding the narrative experiences of the evolving overdose risk management strategies among a nati

How the stigma of low literacy can impair patient-professional spoken interactions and affect health: insights from a qualitative investigation.

BACKGROUND: Low literacy is a significant problem across the developed world. A considerable body of research has reported associations between low literacy and less appropriate access to healthcare services, lower likelihood of self-managing health conditions well, and poorer health outcomes. There is a need to explore the previously neglected perspectives of people with low literacy to help explain how low literacy can lead to poor health, and to consider how to improve the ability of health services to meet their needs. METHODS: Two stage qualitative study. In-depth individual interviews f

Evaluation of a patient-initiated review system in rheumatoid arthritis: an implementation trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the joints causing unpredictable episodes of pain, stiffness and disability. People with rheumatoid arthritis usually require lifelong specialist follow-up but frequently have periods when their disease can be managed through self-care or that provided by their general practitioner. Compared to the traditional clinician-driven care in rheumatoid arthritis, patient-initiated care has proven to be more beneficial in terms of reducing unnecessary medical reviews, providing greater satisfaction to patients and staffs
