BACKGROUND: Parasites of the genus Echinococcus are common worldwide and are important cestodes that cause serious infections in humans and animals. This retrospective study evaluated the indirect hemagglutination (IHA) test results of serum samples obtained from patients with a pre-diagnosis of cystic echinococcosis (CE) within ten years. In addition, the role of the IHA test results of the patients in the follow-up of the treatment and determining possible recurrences was investigated.
METHODS: The IHA test results of 2426 serum samples of patients with a pre-diagnosed CE admitted to Trakya

An accurate diagnostic test for early severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection is the key weapon to control the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. We previously reported that the SARS-CoV-2 genome contains a unique orf8 accessory gene absent from other human-pathogenic coronaviruses. Here, we characterized the SARS-CoV-2 orf8 as a novel immunogenic secreted protein and utilized it for the accurate diagnosis of COVID-19. Extracellular orf8 protein was detected in cell culture supernatant and in sera of COVID-19 patients. In addition, orf8 was found highl

BACKGROUND: Blood transfusion safety commences with healthy donor recruitment. The threat of transfusion transmitted infections is greatly minimized by serological tools but not entirely eliminated. Recently, nucleic-acid testing for blood donor screening has virtually eliminated this jeopardy.
METHODS: This prospective study was conducted from February 2015 to February 2016. Samples from seronegative donors were run on multiplex assay (Cobas, S-201 system platform, Roche) in a batch of six [MP-NAT]. In case of reactive pool, tests were run on every individual sample [IDNAT].
RESULTS: Of 169

BACKGROUND: Cat-scratch disease (CSD) is common in children, however the wide spectrum of the clinical presentation of CSD may lead to delayed diagnosis. An atypical presentation of CSD includes in its differential diagnosis diseases such as tuberculosis, other mycobacterioses, Epstein-Barr-Virus infection (EBV) or malignant disease. Since, in a small number of cases, these diseases may be present concurrently with an active CSD, it is important to consider CSD early in the differential diagnosis and order the appropriate tests. These tests include serology and, where possible, histology inclu

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) has a worldwide distribution mainly in the developing countries like India. The study was done to find the seroprevalence of anti-cysticercus antibodies in clinically suspected and MRI proven cases and to corroborate the serological findings with radiological findings (MRI). A hospital based study among 204 suspected patients during January, 1996 to August, 2001 showed that 77 (32.2%, M:F = 2.2:1) had serological evidence of NCC. Of the total 189 sera, tested at 1:100 dilution 68 (35.9%) and of the total 50 CSF, tested at 1:5 dilution 9 (18%) were positive for anti-cys

Acute renal failure in association with microangiopathic hemolytic anemia and the pathological finding of thrombotic microangiopathy may occur in a number of conditions including hemolytic uremic syndrome, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, and systemic sclerosis. Distinguishing between these conditions on clinical grounds may be difficult, and further investigations, including serological tests, are normally helpful. We present a patient who was treated with 5 doses of monthly carboplatin chemotherapy for stage IIb ovarian carcinoma and who subsequently developed acute renal failure and mic

BACKGROUND/AIM: Congenital human cytomegalovirus infection (cCMV) is the commonest congenital infection, and it can result in hearing loss and neurodevelopmental delay. Even if primary infections are more frequent and cause more severe congenital cCMV manifestations compared to NPIs, and despite partial protection from maternal immunity, the highest birth prevalence of cCMV is observed in seropositive women with non-primary CMV infection (NPI). Given that NPI contribute significantly to the overall burden of cCMV, their accurate diagnosis of NPI remains clinically important. Considering that t

BACKGROUND: Transfusion-transmissible infections (TTIs), particularly human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV), continue to compromise blood safety, especially in high-burden and resource-limited settings. Variability in diagnostic performance across screening modalities contributes to residual risk, particularly during the immunological window period.
OBJECTIVE: To comparatively evaluate the diagnostic performance and incremental yield of Rapid tests, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), chemiluminescent immunoassay (CLIA), and nucleic ac

The use of provocative Koch test proved most effective in enhancing sensitivity of serological diagnostic tests EIA and IHA with PHA. This contributed to more accurate assessment of the tuberculous process activity in patients with advanced destruction of the kidneys. Quantitation of antituberculous antibodies may serve an additional criterium in evaluation of effectiveness of urological tuberculosis chemotherapy.

Cat scratch disease (CSD), the typical clinical manifestation of Bartonella infections usually follows a typical benign self-limited course. Nevertheless, a variety of unusual clinical manifestations and confusing imaging features can lead to misinterpretations and render the disease a diagnostic dispute. Routine laboratory tests exhibit varying reported sensitivity and are usually unhelpful in diagnosis, as serology fails in terms of specificity and/or sensitivity. Herein we report a case of seronegative Bartonella infection presenting as symptomatic suppurative lymphadenitis with abscess for

"Z" is a recently discovered microorganism that may belong to a new genus in the family Chlamydiaceae. Using an ELISA test we developed, we measured levels of serum antibody against "Z" for 308 paired sera obtained from adult patients hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). In 114 patients (37%), serological evidence of past infection with "Z" was found. In eight patients (2.6%) there was serological evidence of acute infection with this pathogen. In four of these eight patients, no other pathogen for CAP was identified despite an intensive serological investigation encompassing

Investigations on the reasons of infectious abortion cases in sheep flocks in northern parts of Baden-Wuerttemberg eludicate the wide-spreading of Chlamydia psittaci (C. psittaci) and its significance as the most frequent cause of abortions in sheep. Another important pathogen agent causing abortions is Salmonella abortus ovis (S. abortus ovis) which could be demonstrated by using a serological ELISA test. A less important role than C. psittaci and S. abortus ovis plays Coxiella burnetii in abortion of sheep. A high prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii and border disease infections in sheep flocks

Secondary syphilis is known for its diverse mucocutaneous manifestations; however, detailed chronological documentation of oropharyngeal lesions is extremely limited. We report the case of a man in his 20 s who presented with mucous patches that were initially suspected to represent an oropharyngeal tumor. Although syphilis was clinically suspected at the initial visit, the patient declined serological testing and was advised to refrain from sexual activity. Serial endoscopic observations over 56 days demonstrated dynamic morphological changes, including spontaneous regression, subsequent exac

Fascioliasis is a zoonotic infection caused by the hepatic trematodes Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica. It presents with nonspecific symptoms, which can occasionally be complicated by rare but severe manifestations such as spontaneous hepatic hemorrhage. This study describes 3 cases of fascioliasis in female patients aged 35-56 years, who presented with right upper quadrant pain and nonspecific symptoms, including anorexia, nausea, and weakness. Laboratory investigations revealed hypereosinophilia and elevated liver enzymes. Imaging showed massive subcapsular and intrahepatic hematomas

Visceral leishmaniasis is a widely distributed zoonosis and canine infection is an important indicator of risk for the occurrence of the disease in humans. The goal of this analysis was to study the spatial clustering of canine leishmaniasis (CL) in the municipality of Santa Luzia, state of Paraíba. For this, 749 samples of canine plasma were tested using three serological tests. The dog was considered positive if it reacted in two serological tests. The location of the residences was performed with a Global Positioning System receiver (GPS Garmin® eTrex 30), and used to perform georeferencing

Chlamydia pneumoniae has been associated with atherosclerosis and several other chronic diseases, but reports from different laboratories are highly variable and "gold standards" are lacking, which has led to calls for more standardized approaches to diagnostic testing. Using leading researchers in the field, we reviewed the available approaches to serological testing, culture, DNA amplification, and tissue diagnostics to make specific recommendations. With regard to serological testing, only use of microimmunofluorescence is recommended, standardized definitions for "acute infection" and "pas

The apparent coexistence of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) and autoimmune hepatitis in the same patient raises unresolved problems for nosology and therapy. These are exemplified by a 45-year-old Japanese woman with overlapping clinical, serological and histological features of autoimmune cholangitis and autoimmune hepatitis. The classical serological test for PBC, antimitochondrial antibody (AMA) by immunofluorescence, was atypical. By immunoblotting there was reactivity with one of the enzymes of the 2-oxo-acid dehydrogenase complex (2-OADC) family, now recognized as autoantigens responsibl

Nine serological techniques were compared by monitoring the response to infection with Rift Valley fever (RVF) virus in three sheep. Antibodies were monitored daily for the first 14 days after infection, then weekly and later fortnightly up to week 24. The earliest antibody response was detected in one sheep on day 3 by a plaque reduction neutralization test, and by day 6 antibodies were demonstrable in all three sheep by haemagglutination-inhibition, reversed passive haemagglutination-inhibition, immunodiffusion, indirect immunofluorescence (IF), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and neutrali

BACKGROUND: Slaughter pigs are monitored for the presence of the zoonotic pathogen Salmonella, using both serology and bacteriology. ELISAs used to investigate pig herds are based on the detection of antibodies against components of the Salmonella cell envelope. Nearly all Salmonella isolates in food-producing animals are serovars of Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica, distributed over various serogroups as determined by the composition of their lipopolysaccharide (LPS). ELISAs for Salmonella serology are usually based on serogroup B and C1 LPS, often combined with serogroup D or E LPS. A
