BACKGROUND: To investigate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) prevalence, associated comorbidities, distribution of respiratory events in different sleep states, and body positions in infants.
METHODS: This was a single-center retrospective study that included infants aged 0 to 12 months who underwent polysomnogram (PSG). OSA severity was categorized by obstructive apnea-hypopnea index (OAHI) as mild (1-4.9 events/h), moderate (5-9.9 events/h), and severe (≥10 events/h).
RESULTS: One hundred eighteen infants were included with a median age of 5 months (interquartile range, [IQR] 2.0-9.0) for the …

Across the animal kingdom, olfactory dysfunction and anosmia have been associated with disruptions in sleep. In the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, various studies have demonstrated that broadly inhibiting olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) similarly disrupts sleep/wake cycles, suggesting that baseline ORN signaling is an integral component of olfactory modulation of sleep. However, due to the diversity of ORNs and combinatorial nature of olfactory processing, many of the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which ORNs modulate sleep remain unclear. In this study, we addressed this gap of kn…

The link between neurological diseases and fractures is recognized in literature. However, the fact that spontaneous fractures or fractures without obvious trauma may be the first sign of an underlying neurological disease, such as inaugural nocturnal epileptic seizures or abnormal movement disorders during sleep, is much less so. Through some clinical vignettes and a review of published cases, this article would like to raise awareness among the medical profession of this issue, which incidence is probably underestimated.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To investigate sleep perception during a 32-h continuous bedrest polysomnography in patients with idiopathic hypersomnia (IH), nonspecified hypersomnia (NSH) and healthy controls (HC).
METHODS: Patients with suspected IH, and HC (n = 14) underwent a regular polysomnography, a modified multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) and a 32-hour bedrest protocol, from 11PM till 7AM the day after, without circadian synchronizers. Patients were diagnosed with IH with long-sleep-time (IH-LST, n = 72) if they had a positive bedrest (sleep duration ≥ 19h), without LST (IH-nLST, n = 10, sleep …

Sleep deficiency increases the risk of cerebrovascular diseases. However, the effects of sleep deprivation (SD) on cerebral blood flow have been poorly studied. We examined the effect of 24-h of SD on the resting posterior cerebral artery (PCA) and middle cerebral artery (MCA) flow velocities (FV), the visually evoked FV response in the PCA (neurovascular coupling), and the hypercapnia-induced FV response in the MCA (cerebral vasoreactivity). Visual evoked potential (VEP) and transcranial Doppler examinations were performed in 25 healthy adults before and after 24-h of SD. Cerebral vasoreactiv…

BACKGROUND: High noise levels during daytime work may cause sleep disturbances amongst workers, but research findings are inconclusive so far.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to compare sleep amongst workers exposed to high and low daytime noise during work in a developing country, where workplaces often have high noise levels.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted amongst 181 metal industrial workers (high-noise-exposed workers) and 72 office cleaners (low-noise-exposed workers) in Tanzania. The average noise levels were 97.9 and 76.6 dBA for the high- and low-noise-exposed workers, res…

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is an extremely common but underdiagnosed problem in adults receiving dialysis therapy. Patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) on hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis have a higher prevalence of OSA compared to the general population (Nicholl et al., 2013; Kimmel et al., 1989; Markou et al., 2006). This condition carries significant clinical implications, contributing to impaired sleep quality, daytime fatigue, and elevated cardiovascular risk if left untreated (Marin et al., 2005; Burkhalter et al., 2024). In fact, untreated OSA is associated with markedly …

Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and nontoxic multinodular goiter are conditions that often coexist. Treatments of both conditions have evolved over time, but continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), oral appliances, or surgical therapy are often needed. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of the soft palate and base of tongue has been applied as a newer alternative therapy for OSA. RFA is also an increasingly used approach for thyroid nodules and goiter, but previously had no known connection to OSA. Case Presentation: A 59-year-old female with a known history of multinodular goiter and…

INTRODUCTION: Sleep is an indispensable physiological phenomenon. The complexity of sleep and the time it occupies in human life determine that its quality is positively correlated with human health. Since polysomnography was used in spaceflight in 1967, the sleep problem during astronaut flight has been studied in depth for more than 50 yr, and many solutions have been proposed, but astronauts have always had sleep problems during orbital flight. Insufficient sleep and changes in the rhythm of human sleep-wake activity will lead to disturbance of the human body's internal rhythm indicators, w…

Memory reprocessing during sleep is a well-established phenomenon in numerous studies. However, it is unclear whether the intensity of memory reprocessing is consistently maintained throughout the night or exhibits dynamic changes. This study investigates the temporal dynamics of negative emotional memory reprocessing during sleep, with a specific focus on slow oscillation (SO)-spindle coupling and its role in memory reprocessing. In the first experiment (N = 40, mean age = 22.5 years), we detected the negative emotional memory reprocessing strength in each sleep cycle, we found that the 2nd s…

Cognitive fatigue (CF) is a critical factor affecting performance and well-being. It can be altered in suboptimal sleep quality conditions, e.g., in patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea who experience both intermittent hypoxia and sleep fragmentation (SF). Understanding the neurophysiological basis of SF in healthy individuals can provide insights to improve cognitive functioning in disrupted sleep conditions. In this electroencephalographical (EEG) study, we investigated in 16 healthy young participants the impact of experimentally induced SF on the neurophysiological correlates of…

Depression and periodic limb movement disease are both common disorders which frequently co-exist. Furthermore, antidepressants are known to cause and worsen periodic limb movements in sleep, which can worsen the quality of sleep and subsequently daytime symptoms. However, the effect of antidepressants on periodic limb movements is not uniform and depends on their mechanism of action. In this review we summarise the knowledge on the mechanism of periodic limb movements in sleep, and how changes in the concentration of neurotransmitters can contribute to them. We comprehensively evaluate the li…

OBJECTIVE: Despite recognition that people with HIV (PWH) are more vulnerable to sleep issues, there is limited understanding of clinically recognized sleep disorders in this population. Our objective was to evaluate the full spectrum of sleep disorder types diagnosed among PWH in care.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of PWH, and a comparator group of people without HIV (PWoH), in a large healthcare system. The incidence of clinically diagnosed sleep disorders was calculated using Poisson regression for three outcomes: any type of sleep disorder, insomnia, and sleep apnea. …
