Apples are sun-loving plants, and excessive canopy closure in orchards leads to poor ventilation and reduced light penetration, ultimately limiting yield and fruit quality. Autophagy is a conserved mechanism for recycling cellular materials and energy in eukaryotes and is known to participate in multiple stress responses. However, whether autophagy contributes to low-light adaptation remains largely unclear. Here, we show that MdATG5a enhances the tolerance of apple plants to low-light conditions. Under low light, MdATG5a-overexpressing (OE) plants exhibited higher photosynthetic capacity, gre

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is a globally significant forage crop essential for ensuring global food security. However, soil water deficit leads to a substantial decline in its yield, posing a severe threat to sustainable forage production. Dirigent (DIR) proteins play important roles in lignan biosynthesis and plant stress responses. Here, we identified 52 MsDIR genes in alfalfa through a genome-wide analysis, and screened MsDIR6 as a key candidate gene associated with drought tolerance. The results of qRT-PCR showed that MsDIR6 transcription was significantly induced by drought stress in al

The first summer after fire poses a high risk of drought mortality for species that rely on postfire recruitment for their persistence in fire-prone ecosystems (postfire seeders). However, little is known about how future conditions of elevated atmospheric CO2 (eCO2) and its interaction with severe drought will affect this key life history strategy in Mediterranean shrublands. We investigated the extent to which eCO2 modifies plant traits and resource allocation, as well as how eCO2 and drought intensity interact to modify plant water status, water fluxes and hydraulic behavior in 8-month-old

Forecasting forest responses to climate change requires mechanistic insight into how rising atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2]) affects within-species drought tolerances. We tested whether elevated [CO2] alters drought resistance and recovery using cuttings of two ecotypes of Populus balsamifera (Peace River, PR; Hay River, HR) grown under factorial combinations of [CO2] (400 vs. 1000 μmol mol-1) and water regime (well-watered vs. drought followed by re-watering). Under drought, elevated [CO2] compensated for the water deficit in net photosynthesis (Pn) only in PR, narrowing the ecotypic dif

When cultivating Ilex rotunda Thunb., the blind application of nitrogen fertilizer often resulted in poor growth and negatively impacted yield and quality. To explore the balancing effect of carbon fertilizer on excessive nitrogen fertilizer and improve the yield and quality of I. rotunda, two-year-old cuttings were sprayed with different concentrations of urea and α-ketoglutarate (α-KG) in 12 treatment groups. After 12 weeks of treatment, the growth, photosynthetic indexes, main physiological indexes and metabolome of I. rotunda were determined and analyzed. The results showed that applying a

Drought stress exacerbated by climate change severely impairs the growth and quality of horticultural crops. Grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) is an economically vital fruit species, and exploring stress-tolerant genes lays a foundation for its genetic improvement and sustainable cultivation. BiP proteins serve as pivotal endoplasmic reticulum (ER) molecular chaperones and participate widely in plant abiotic stress acclimation, yet the genomic features and drought-associated functions of grapevine BiP family genes remain largely unclear. In this study, three VvBiP members were identified genome-wi

Salinity stress severely limits cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) productivity by disrupting growth, photosynthesis, and ion homeostasis. This study investigated the potential of foliar-applied allantoin (1 mM) and citrulline (1 mM) to enhance salinity tolerance in hairy cucumber, a salt-sensitive Iranian landrace. A completely randomized design factorial experiment with three replications tested salinity levels (0, 50, 100 mM NaCl) and foliar treatments (control, allantoin, citrulline, and their combination). The results showed that salinity reduced plant height, dry weight, chlorophyll content (

Soil salinization has become a major constraint on afforestation and forest regeneration in Northeast China, limiting the growth and development of Larix gmelinii. Enhancing the salt tolerance of L. gmelinii is therefore of considerable importance, and ectomycorrhizal fungi (ECMF) inoculation has been shown to improve plant stress resistance. However, the mechanisms by which ECMF enhance salt tolerance in L. gmelinii remain poorly understood. In this study, L. gmelinii seedlings inoculated with an ECMF consortium consisting of Boletus edulis and Chroogomphus rutilus were subjected to 120 mM Na

Drought stress has a profound impact on yield, with massive repercussions for agricultural production. In addition to ABA, the central hormone controlling the plant response to drought, secondary metabolites also play important functions in drought stress; however, the precise nature of their roles is still obscure. Metabolomics analysis of ABA- and PEG-treated Arabidopsis wild-type (WT) seedlings as well as ABA signal transduction mutants snrk-triple (snrk2.2 snrk2.3 snrk2.6) and pyl-quadruple (pyr1 pyl1 pyl2 pyl4) identified a number of drought-related metabolites. Specifically, we observed

Elevated atmospheric CO₂ is a prominent consequence of global climate change, which substantially alters plant physiological processes and further modulates the environmental fate of pesticides in agricultural ecosystems, thereby threatening agricultural product safety and ecological health. Nevertheless, the physiological and biochemical mechanisms underlying elevated CO₂-regulated uptake, translocation, and metabolism of fungicides in crop plants remain largely unclear. In the present study, cucumber seedlings were selected as the model plant, and integrated physiological detection, subcellu

This study investigated the effects of drought during reproductive and boll development stages under elevated CO2 conditions. A pot experiment was conducted in the Soil-Plant-Atmospheric-Research (SPAR) facility using the upland cotton cultivar DP 1646 B2XF grown under control (well-watered; 0.12 m3 H2O m-3 soil) and drought (0.09 m3 H2O m-3 soil) conditions at ambient (425 ppm; aCO2) and enriched (725 ppm; eCO2) CO2 concentrations. Under drought stress, photosynthesis and stomatal conductance decreased by 35% and 63%, respectively, under aCO2, whereas reductions were less pronounced under eCO

High salt stress can hinder plant growth and development, thus reducing crop yield and quality. As an important signaling molecule, NO is involved in regulating various physiological and biochemical processes in plants. In this study, tobacco seedlings treated with 200 mmol/L NaCl exhibited leaf etiolation, sharp increases in superoxide anion (O2−) and peroxynitrite anion (ONOO−) contents, reduced activities of photosystem I (PSI) and II (PSII) reaction centers, and obstructed electron transfer. However, overexpression of the gene encoding the NO regulator nitrosoglutathione reductase (GSNOR)

Recurrent drought limits the productivity of perennial crops such as citrus, whose tolerance to water deficit largely depends on scion-rootstock interactions. Although physiological responses to recurrent drought are well documented, the epigenetic states associated with these responses remain poorly understood, limiting the use of epigenetic variation to improve drought resilience. Here, we investigated whole-genome DNA methylation profiles and transcriptional responses in "Pera-D6" sweet orange (LP) grafted onto two rootstocks with contrasting physiological strategies for coping with water d

Soil moisture and amount of fertilizer consumption are among the most important environmental factors determining plant growth and yield. This study was conducted as a split-plot design in randomized complete blocks at three iterations in Hormozgan Province, southern Iran, 2021 and 2022. Irrigation at six levels of no irrigation and supplying 40%, 60%, 80%, 100%, and 120% of water requirement was considered as the main factor, and using nitrogen fertilizer at four levels of 0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg/ha was considered as the secondary factor. The interaction effect of irrigation and nitrogen f

In this research, we sought to investigate how high temperature, salinity, and CO2 affect endogenous phytohormones, photosynthesis, and redox homeostasis in Caragana korshinskii Kom (C. korshinskii) leaves, as well as to comprehensively evaluate the plant's physiological response to multiple environmental stressors. The elevated temperature (e[T]), elevated Na+ (e[Na]), and elevated temperature and Na+ (e[T-Na]) treatments increased abscisic acid (ABA) and reduced zeatin-riboside (ZR), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), and gibberellic acid (GA3). These changes induced stomatal closure, and the subse

One of the greatest threats to plant function and fitness is global warming, characterised by a combination of increased atmospheric CO2 concentrations and temperatures. However, their effects on plant physiology, growth, and reproduction remain unclear, particularly for rare species that support vulnerable ecosystem functions. Here, we investigated these effects on leaf and whole-plant functional traits of the rare endangered C3 species Dianthus inoxianus. Mature plants were grown for 18 weeks in controlled-environment chambers under four environmental scenarios that combined day/night air te

There is increasing urgency for more productive and resource-use-efficient crops to cope with changing climates. One possibility to improve crop productivity is to enhance photosynthesis. Here, we studied four linted cotton species (Gossypium hirsutum, G. barbadense, G. arboreum, and G. herbaceum) for diversity in the temperature response of Rubisco catalysis and impact on carbon assimilation. Compared with the model C3 plant tobacco, each cotton Rubisco had a slower carboxylation rate (kcatc) and higher CO2 affinity (lower KC21%O2) in response to temperature, with the specificity for CO2 over

The Metropolitan Area of São Paulo (MASP) in southern Brazil is impacted by high ozone levels posing significant threats to its urban forests and the Atlantic Forest remnants. These green areas, covering 540 km2 and constituting 30% of MASP's territory, necessitate an urgent assessment of air pollution impacts on their flora. Our study investigates the effects of atmospheric pollution on the morphoanatomical and physiological responses of four native tree species (Alchornea sidifolia, Casearia sylvestris, Guarea macrophylla, and Machaerium nyctitans) across two Atlantic Forest remnants in MASP

BACKGROUND: Thymus daenensis, an aromatic medicinal plant endemic to Iran, produces essential oils rich in thymol and carvacrol, which exhibit potent antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Drought stress can alter secondary metabolite biosynthetic pathways, potentially enhancing the plant's stress tolerance mechanisms. Polyamines (PAs), particularly putrescine (Put), are known to mitigate drought-induced damage by modulating stomatal conductance, enhancing osmotic adjustment, and regulating oxidative stress responses. This study investigated the effects of exogenous Put on T. daenensis unde
