A prototype magnesium (Mg) surgical tack is tested comparatively against commercially available tacks made of titanium (ProTacktm, Medtronic) and PLGA (AbsorbaTacktm, Medtronic). The pull-out force is measured in situ in a lap-shear pull-out test, using porcine abdominal muscle tissue as a model. The Mg tack had a pull-out force comparable to those of the commercially available tacks. We report 2 cases of stapes surgery failure due to the depth marker groove of the piston of a Big Easy titanium prosthesis getting caught at the edge of the stapedotomy hole. In the first case, the stapedotomy failure, detected peroperatively, was corrected by modifying the angulation of the shaft of the prosthesis. Between 2002 and 2008, 130 consecutive ankles were replaced with an hydroxyapatite (HA) and titanium-HA-coated Ankle Evolutive System total ankle prosthesis.
