The 'Franssen' illusion for short duration tones is preattentive: a study using mismatch negativity.

When a tone burst is divided into two parts, an onset transient and a sustained tone smoothly fading on, and these parts are delivered to tw … hed to the other loudspeaker. In the other block, the roles of the two stimuli were swapped. A room acoustics software was used for generating the signals to a headphone. The responses recorded from 10 subjects displayed no MMN, although the same stimuli but without the transients evoked prominent MMNs. This indicated that the mechanism underlying this illu …

Male spot-legged treefrogs (Polypedates megacephalus) respond differently to diverse vocal combinations varied in units and orders.

Some vertebrate taxa, particularly birds and mammals, employ complex vocalisations composed of multiple vocal units for communication. Many anurans, especially treefrogs, appear to possess similar vocal capabilities; however, the complex combinatorial nature of amphibian vocal systems has been studied less extensively. In this study, we recorded 2002 calls from 75 male spot-legged treefrogs (Polypedates megacephalus) in natural choruses and conducted playback experiments to examine their responses to different call types. We found that males can produce rich compound calls by combining three v

Voice Differences When Wearing and Not Wearing a Surgical Mask.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of our study was to investigate the impact of surgical mask on some vocal parameters such as F0, vocal intensity, jitter, shimmer and harmonics-to-noise ratio in order to understand how surgical mask can affect voice and verbal communication in adults. METHODS: The study was carried out on a selected group of 60 healthy subjects. All subjects were trained to voice a vocal sample of a sustained /a/, at a conversational voice intensity for the Maximum Phonation Time (MPT), wearing the surgical mask and then without wearing the surgical mask. Voice samples were recorded di

Auditory Neuroscience: Unravelling How the Brain Gives Sound Meaning.

The brain must be able to assign sounds in the world to behaviourally meaningful categories. A new study has revealed that sensory pathways represent category information, but that selectivity for sound classes emerges first in the frontal cortex.

Perception of reverberation length in rooms with reverberation enhancement systems.

This study examined the perception of reverberation length in rooms equipped with a reverberation enhancement system (RES). In the past, many acousticians have studied the correlation between subjective reverberation ratings and objective criteria in concert halls; the effect of RES on these ratings has not been thoroughly investigated. The decay of acoustic energy in rooms with RES has double-slope characteristics, which is different from most impulse responses recorded in rooms without such a system. The study showed a difference in the evaluation of perceived stop-chord and running reverber

Comparison of measurement of integrated relaxation pressure by esophageal manometry with analysis of swallowing sounds with artificial intelligence in patients with achalasia.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal motility disorders are mainly evaluated with high-resolution manometry (HRM) which is a time-consuming and uncomfortable procedure with potential adverse events. Acoustic characterization of the swallowing has the potential to be an alternative noninvasive procedure. METHODS: We compared the findings on HRM and swallowing sounds in 43 patients who were referred for evaluation of dysphagia. The sound analysis was done with empirical mode decomposition method and with artificial intelligence (AI) and the estimated integrated relaxation pressure (IRP) from a two-layer neur

Evolutionary loss of complexity in human vocal anatomy as an adaptation for speech.

Human speech production obeys the same acoustic principles as vocal production in other animals but has distinctive features: A stable vocal source is filtered by rapidly changing formant frequencies. To understand speech evolution, we examined a wide range of primates, combining observations of phonation with mathematical modeling. We found that source stability relies upon simplifications in laryngeal anatomy, specifically the loss of air sacs and vocal membranes. We conclude that the evolutionary loss of vocal membranes allows human speech to mostly avoid the spontaneous nonlinear phenomena

Speech Computations of the Human Superior Temporal Gyrus.

Human speech perception results from neural computations that transform external acoustic speech signals into internal representations of words. The superior temporal gyrus (STG) contains the nonprimary auditory cortex and is a critical locus for phonological processing. Here, we describe how speech sound representation in the STG relies on fundamentally nonlinear and dynamical processes, such as categorization, normalization, contextual restoration, and the extraction of temporal structure. A spatial mosaic of local cortical sites on the STG exhibits complex auditory encoding for distinct aco

Even violins can cry: specifically vocal emotional behaviours also drive the perception of emotions in non-vocal music.

A wealth of theoretical and empirical arguments have suggested that music triggers emotional responses by resembling the inflections of expressive vocalizations, but have done so using low-level acoustic parameters (pitch, loudness, speed) that, in fact, may not be processed by the listener in reference to human voice. Here, we take the opportunity of the recent availability of computational models that allow the simulation of three specifically vocal emotional behaviours: smiling, vocal tremor and vocal roughness. When applied to musical material, we find that these three acoustic manipulatio

Sensitivity of Source-Filter Interaction to Specific Vocal Tract Shapes.

A systematic variation of length and cross-sectional area of specific segments of the vocal tract (trachea to lips) was conducted computationally to quantify the effects of source-filter interaction. A one-dimensional Navier-Stokes (transmission line) solution was used to compute peak glottal airflow, maximum flow declination rate, and formant ripple on glottal flow for Level 1 (aero-acoustic) interactions. For Level 2 (tissue movement) interaction, peak glottal area, phonation threshold pressure, and deviation in fo were quantified. Results show that the ventricle, the false-fold glottis, the

Molecular imaging of myocardial and vascular disorders with ultrasound.

Methods for noninvasive imaging of specific disease-related molecular changes are being developed in order to expand and improve diagnostic capabilities and to enhance therapeutic decision making in the clinical setting. These new techniques have also started to be incorporated into research programs in order to better characterize pathophysiology or evaluate treatment efficacy. Molecular imaging with contrast-enhanced ultrasound relies on the detection of the acoustic signal produced by either microbubbles or other acoustically active particulate agents that are targeted to sites of disease.

Vocal fold surgery of benign inflammatory lesions of Reinke's space: an outcome study in 47 subjects.

Phonosurgery should lead to a better voice quality and a better quality of life. Only a few studies report outcome of phonosurgery in terms of stroboscopic, perceptual, aerodynamic, acoustic and self-rating data. The protocol as proposed by the European Laryngological Society (ELS; Dejonckere et al. in Arch Otorhinolaryngol 258:77-82, 2001) complies with this condition. A group of 47 patients who underwent phonosurgery was pre- and postoperatively assessed by means of the ELS protocol in order to evaluate postoperative outcome. Analysis of the data showed a significant improvement for all dime

SVM-based identification of pathological voices.

This paper proposed a support vector machine (SVM) based classification method to identify diversified pathological voices. Sound signals were sampled from the pronunciation of a vowel "a" vocalized by 214 subjects, including 181 patients suffered from various dysphonias (such as polypoid degeneration, adductor spasmodic dysphonia, vocal fatigue, vocal tremor, vocal fold edema, hyperfunction, and erythema), and 33 healthy subjects. 25 acoustic parameters were calculated from the sampled data for each subject. The original acoustic dataset was first transformed via principal component analysis

High-speed digital imaging and electroglottography of tracheoesophageal phonation by Amatsu's method.

BACKGROUND: Our previous findings have indicated that the thyropharyngeal muscles form a retropharyngeal prominence during alaryngeal phonation via the TE fistula. This prominence forms a so-called 'neoglottis', which is thought to function as the vibratory source. To better understand the mechanism of TE phonation, we analyzed the vibration of the neoglottis using electroglottography (EGG) and a high-speed digital imaging system. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two volunteers who use TE phonation for their daily speech communication were subjected to this study. The vibrations of the neoglottis were r

Audiological findings in patients with ankylosing spondylitis.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease. The aim of this investigation was to study the relationship between AS and hearing loss. This study compared 28 patients with AS with 23 age-matched controls. All subjects underwent ENT examination, audiological and acoustic immittance measurements, and auditory brainstem response (ABR) tests. Sensorineural hearing loss was found in 28.6 per cent of the AS patients and in 4.35 per cent of the control group. For hearing levels at 250-500 Hz and 4000-8000 Hz, there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups. Ac

Laterality of brain tumors.

Tumor laterality was evaluated with respect to presenting symptoms and demographic factors among 489 adults with histologically confirmed glioma (354 high-grade, 135 low-grade), 197 with meningioma, and 96 with acoustic neuroma. The ratio of left-sided to right-sided tumors did not differ significantly from 1.00 for any of the major tumor types. Low-grade glioma and meningioma occurred nonsignificantly more often on the left side, whereas high-grade glioma and acoustic neuroma occurred nonsignificantly more often on the right side. Aphasia or mental status changes were significantly more commo

[Optoacoustic tissue alterations for optimizing laser cyclophotocoagulation. Transscleral detection of laser-induced optoacoustic pressure transients].

BACKGROUND: Considerable problems occur in transscleral laser cyclophotocoagulation concerning energy dosage. We investigated the feasibility of localizing the ciliary body by the detection of thermoelastic pressure transients and of supervising on-line the degree of tissue damage during treatment. METHOD: We used a specially designed handpiece to apply short pulsed laser radiation with low energy levels to enucleated bulbs of rabbits. With an adjusted pressure transducer we examined acoustical transients generated in the area of absorption of the ciliary muscle or the pigmented epithelial la

How do tympanic-membrane perforations affect human middle-ear sound transmission?

Although tympanic-membrane (TM) perforations are common sequelae of middle-ear disease, the hearing losses they cause have not been accurately determined, largely because additional pathological conditions occur in these ears. Our measurements of acoustic transmission before and after making controlled perforations in cadaver ears show that perforations cause frequency-dependent loss that: (1) is largest at low frequencies; (2) increases as perforation size increases; and (3) does not depend on perforation location. The dominant loss mechanism is the reduction in sound-pressure difference acro

The stapedial reflex as a topographical marker of proximal involvement of the facial nerve in leprosy. A pilot study.

This study aimed to determine the parameters necessary for a study of stapedial reflexes in leprosy patients to ascertain if the facial nerve is involved more proximally than the stylomastoid foramen. It involved leprosy patients with and without facial nerve involvement and non-leprosy controls. Clinical examination of the patients' ears, a tympanogram and audiogram to exclude conductive and sensorineural deafness, followed by the measurement of a stapedial reflex and the acoustic reflex threshold, were carried out. The number of absent reflexes and the acoustic reflex thresholds did not diff
