Changes in cortical activity during foot shock were assessed under conscious and propofol-anesthetized conditions using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). One case of prenatally diagnosed congenital diaphragmatic hernia was reviewed in terms of the anesthetic managements. Concentrations of diazepam, pancuronium and fentanyl were measured in maternal, fetal and umbilical serum. As expectedly, the transition of diazepam through the placenta was large and the concentration of diazepam in the fetal serum was equal to that of maternal serum, but only a small amount of pancuronium was transferred.

The effects of intramuscular injections of xylazine (2 mg/kg)-ketamine (15 mg/kg) [X-K15], and xylazine (2 mg/kg)-ketamine (5 mg/kg)-butorphanol (0.22 mg/kg) [X-K5-B] were compared in atropinized (0.05 mg/kg) miniature pigs (pigs). Six combinations of injectable anesthetic agents were administered to six adult horses in a Latin square design. The drug combinations were xylazine-ketamine, xylazine-butorphanol-ketamine, xylazine-tiletamine-zolazepam, xylazine-butorphanol-tiletamine-zolazepam, detomidine-ketamine, and detomidine-butorphanol-ketamine. Measured variables were heart rate, respiratory rate, systolic blood pressure, arterial pH (pHa), PaCO2, PaO2, recumbency time, and number of attempts necessary to stand. EMLA cream (eutectic mixture of local anaesthetics) was tested in a double-blind clinical trial to examine its effect on the pain of venepuncture at induction of anaesthesia in 40 children (aged 3-13 yrs). Four pain-assessment methods were used and an assessment of the technical ease of venepuncture was made. EMLA was found to reduce significantly the pain and technical difficulty of venepuncture. This study confirms that EMLA is an effective method of reducing the pain and technical difficulty of paediatric venepuncture using 25-gauge needles for induction of anaesthesia in children.

In the 7-year period 1976 through 1982, 48 infants underwent repair of ventricular septal defect (VSD). Their mean age was 5.3 (range 1-11) months and mean body weight 5.4 (range 3.1-9.6) kg. "Uncomplicated" VSD, located in the membranous septum, was present in 33 cases. BACKGROUND: Post cardiac surgery pain remains a problem for a significant number of patients. While opioids have long been used for cardiac surgery pain control and hemodynamic stability, methods to improve pain control while also reducing reliance on opioids are desired. Intravenous lidocaine has shown promise for pain and opioid reduction in multiple operative settings, yet its role in cardiac surgery lacks conclusive data.
