Allergic rhinitis (AR) affects up to 40% of children in the United States and its prevalence continues to increase. Most AR develops during the pediatric years and it is the most common chronic allergic disorder seen in children. It is important to note that AR is more than just sneezing and a nuisance for the children. There are numerous complications that can lead to significant problems both physically and mentally in the child who suffers with AR. Under physical complications, otitis media with effusion, recurrent and/or chronic sinusitis, asthma, and snoring impact children with AR. Sleep

The present study is the first independent investigation of the Comprehensive Trail Making Test (CTMT; Reynolds, 2002) with both clinical and non-clinical samples. We examined convergent and divergent validity by exploring relationships between the CTMT and other measures. Discriminant validity was examined by comparing CTMT scores of non-clinical and clinical groups. Results indicate that the CTMT was largely unrelated to measures of processing speed and nonverbal reasoning, verbal processing, and psychiatric symptoms. The CTMT Composite score was able to differentiate between clinical and no

OBJECTIVE: A review of the evidence concerning the effect of chronic or intermittent hypoxia on cognition in childhood was performed by using both a systematic review of the literature and critical appraisal criteria of causality. Because of the significant impact of behavioral disorders such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder on certain cognitive functions as well as academic achievement, the review also included articles that addressed behavioral outcomes.
METHODS: Both direct and indirect evidence were collected. A structured Medline search was conducted from the years 1966-2000 b

The syndrome of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is heterogeneous in terms of aetiology, psychopathology, and prognosis. It is characterised by cognitive deterioration significantly exceeding the decline attributable to aging but not reaching the severity of dementia. The prevalence of MCI is estimated to be 17% in the population over 65 years old. At neuropathological examination, a large proportion of patients with mild cognitive impairment, particularly of the amnestic type, show typical features of Alzheimer's disease. The former progresses to dementia at an annual rate of 10% to 15%. In so

Elevated rates of attention deficit and overactivity have been noted previously in samples of institution-reared children. This study examined the hypothesis that inattention/overactivity(I/O) might constitute a specific deprivation syndrome. One hundred and sixty five children adopted at varying ages (e.g., 0-42 months of age) into the UK following severe early deprivation were compared with 52 within-UK adoptees who did not suffer deprivation. The children were rated by teachers and parents on levels of I/O, conduct difficulties, and emotional difficulties using the Revised Rutter Scales. Da

The analysis of literary and other information sources (in PubMed, Google Scholar, KiberLeninka and eLibrary databases) devoted to the study of dental manifestations of psychological conditions and the analysis of the ability of dentists to identify psychological predictors of increased tooth erasure in adolescents and young people. Disorders such as stress, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, alcohol dependence, eating disorders - may be risk factors for the development of increased tooth abrasion. Comorbid conditions such as bruxism and gastroesophageal reflux are also cons

The study examined the association between low birth weight (LBW) (< or = 2,500 g) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in two socioeconomically disparate populations. LBW and normal birth weight (NBW) children from the 1983 to 1985 newborn lists of an urban and a suburban hospital in Southeast Michigan were randomly selected. A total of 823 children, 473 LBW and 350 NBW, participated. Data were gathered in 1990 to 1992, when the children were 6 to 7 years of age. The National Institute of Mental Health Diagnostic Interview Schedule for children-Parent version (DISC-P) was used

OBJECTIVE: Behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) is sometimes misdiagnosed as a primary psychiatric disorder, such as major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, an anxiety disorder, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Nonspecialists often use screening measures for primary psychiatric disorders in early assessments of persons with bvFTD. The investigators aimed to evaluate the manifestations of bvFTD in surveys intended to screen for primary psychiatric disorders.
METHODS: Patients with bvFTD (N=27) presenting to an academic neuro

Children and young people (CYP) with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) may be particularly vulnerable to adverse mental health effects due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted a cross-sectional U.K. parent-reported study from 2nd April-2nd June 2020, using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. CYP with NDDs (n = 371), compared to neurotypical controls, had a higher prevalence of emotional symptoms (42% vs. 15%) and conduct problems (28% vs. 9%), and fewer prosocial behaviours (54% vs. 22%). All groups had worse emotional symptoms than pre-COVID groups, and those with attention-defi

BACKGROUND: Oppositional defiant disorder behaviours (ODD) and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder symptoms (ADHD) are common disruptive childhood problems and co-occur to a large extent. In this study, prime questions were the specificity of relations between demographic factors and negative life events, respectively, and ADHD and ODD symptoms, and the role of negative life events in the relations between demographic factors and ODD and ADHD symptoms.
METHODS: Concurrent relations between maternal education, family structure, ethnicity/immigrant background and symptoms of ADHD and ODD w

This study was undertaken to understand and describe Latina mothers' cognitions and attitudes toward the use of medication for their young children's behavior problems under the premise that these factors are determinants of noncompliance and inadequate adherence to medication treatments. Quantitative and qualitative data were extracted from a multimethod study of professional help seeking. Participants were 62 mothers from Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. Findings indicated that mothers overwhelmingly preferred treatment options other than medication primarily because they under

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder in children, often co-occurring with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), a condition characterized by persistent defiant, angry, and oppositional behaviors. This study aims to explore the cognitive, behavioral, and physiological factors influencing the development of ODD in children with ADHD. We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 351 children aged 6-12 years, including ADHD-only, ADHD + ODD, and neurotypical (NT) controls. Participants were assessed using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Child

Vitamin D (vitD) is involved in immune regulation, and its receptor has been identified in several tissues including lung, adipose tissue, brain, and skin. Based on these observations, it has been suggested that vitD has an essential role not only in bone metabolism but also in other diseases such as atopic dermatitis (AD), bronchial asthma (BA), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and obesity because the affected tissues express vitD receptors. Furthermore, obesity, AD, and BA are regarded as inflammatory diseases. Therefore, we hypothesized that vitD concentrations are lower in

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory disease that may be associated with a number of comorbidities including psychosocial disorders, which are the primary focus of this article. The data presented is based on a literature search in PubMed and subsequent screening of relevant review articles and guidelines. There is a greater prevalence of depression, anxiety, sleep disorders and suicidal ideation among individuals with AD. The disease negatively impacts patients' quality of life. Children with AD have been shown to more commonly exhibit signs of attention-deficit/hyperactivity diso

Pediatric sleep disorders are common, affecting approximately 25% to 40% of children and adolescents. Although there are several different types of sleep disorders that affect youth, each disorder can have a significant impact on daytime functioning and development, including learning, growth, behavior, and emotion regulation. Researchers are only beginning to uncover the interaction between sleep and psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents, including depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and autism. This article reviews normal sleep and sleep disorders in children an
