Personality traits underlying both anxiety disorders and depression are more malleable than previously presumed. This study examined associations between changes in personality traits (i.e. negative affectivity and detachment) and alleviation of anxiety and depression symptoms following cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT). We hypothesized that decreases in negative affectivity would predict alleviation of depression and anxiety symptoms and decreases in detachment would predict decreases in depression and, to a lesser degree, anxiety symptoms. Data (N = 156) were collected in a randomized contro

Twice-exceptional individuals are those who have high cognitive ability in one or more areas, but also have a diagnosed disability. The needs of these individuals likely differ from those with high cognitive ability without a disability and those who solely have a disability. Intervening early can offer exceptional benefits for twice-exceptional individuals, but this has proved challenging due to the high cognitive abilities masking disabilities. This study explores if parent-reported developmental milestones can predict the number of disabilities diagnosed for an individual, including Autism

This study examines relationships between mathematical problem-solving performance (in terms of strategies used and accuracy) and the main cognitive domains associated with mathematical learning (i.e. executive functions, verbal comprehension and social perception) of children with and without autism spectrum disorder (ASD and non-ASD resp.). The study involved 26 ASD and 26 non-ASD children without intellectual disabilities, between 6 and 12 years old, matched by sex, age and school (grade and classroom). The results show a higher percentage of ASD children with problem solving difficulties t

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and persistent tic disorder (PTD) are two neurodevelopmental disorders that frequently co-occur. Contributions of each disorder to cognitive and behavioral deficits have been reported. In this paper, we tested 3 models of pathophysiology for the two disorders (additive, interactive, and phenotypic) using resting-state connectivity associated with each disorder separately and together.
METHODS: Participants were 148 children (55 with ADHD only, 33 with ADHD and PTD, 27 with PTD only, and 33 healthy control subjects) at ages 8 to 12 ye

BACKGROUND: Cognitive arousal is thought to play a key role in insomnia disorder. However, although patients frequently complain about racing thoughts appearing at bedtime, studies have considered 'cognitive arousal' as a synonym of rumination and worry, but not as racing thoughts per se. The latter have been mainly linked to hypomanic/manic episodes of bipolar disorder (BD). Here we aimed at investigating self-reported racing thoughts in insomnia disorder, and their specific contribution to insomnia severity, as compared to worry and rumination.
METHODS: 72 adults with insomnia disorder, 49

Besides cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), psychopharmacotherapy belongs to the first-line treatment approaches for anxiety disorders according to all national and international guidelines. According to studies and meta-analyses, modern antidepressants in particular have been proven to be effective. Depending on the substance, there are approvals for panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and social phobia. There are also approvals for other substance groups, e.g. anticonvulsants for generalized anxiety disorder. Benzodiazepines should be used with caution in view of the risk of depende

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) remains the most effective treatment of depression, though it is still unclear which of its type is the most beneficial. The aim of this study was to compare the formula-based right unilateral ECT (RUL) with the fronto-temporal bilateral ECT (BT), in terms of their efficacy, safety and tolerability in patients with bipolar or unipolar depression. Ninety-one patients were randomly assigned to either BT (n = 45) or RUL (n = 46) ECT. Brief pulse width (0.5 ms) and a formula-based dosing method were applied. The clinical efficacy was assessed using the Hamilton Depr

22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2 DS) is widely known as one of the most compelling genetic models of schizophrenia so far, being almost 40% of the carriers affected by psychotic symptoms. Moreover, most of these subjects also show impairment in social cognition, which is a comprehensive array of function that guides social interaction with the others, leading as well to the acquisition of new cognitive and social skills. In the last decade researchers have argued whether social cognition dysfunctions could be underlined by specific genetic alterations, and whether these are linked to specifi

Cannabis has been implicated as a risk factor for the development of schizophrenia, but the exact biological mechanisms remain unclear. In this review, we attempt to understand the neurobiological pathways that link cannabis use to schizophrenia. This has been an area of great debate; despite similarities between cannabis users and schizophrenia patients, the evidence is not sufficient to establish cause-and-effect. There have been advances in the understanding of the mechanisms of cannabis dependence as well as the role of the cannabinoid system in the development of psychosis and schizophren

BACKGROUND: The socio-economic impact of migraine is mostly related to work loss either by absenteeism or decreased work performance. Migraine-associated cognitive dysfunction during an attack may contribute to these difficulties.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this article is to analyze the presence and relevance of cognitive symptoms during migraine attacks and to relate their intensity and symptom-related disability with other migraine-defining symptoms.
METHODS: Consecutive migraine patients of a headache clinic completed diaries scoring each migraine symptom (including cognitive symptoms)

The natural history of sex-linked dystonia parkinsonism (XDP) has been well documented. However, its nonmotor features have not yet been fully described. We reviewed the available literature on the nonmotor features in XDP. We found five articles involving 79 XDP patients, three of which were on cognition and two on mood (anxiety and depression). There were two case reports showing executive dysfunction. The other paper showed impairments in abstract thinking and motor programming. Two articles were on mood (anxiety and depression). The prevalence of anxiety symptoms was 16.7% and 54.8-92.9% h

For many patients with neuropsychiatric illnesses, standard psychiatric treatments with mono or combination pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, and transcranial magnetic stimulation are ineffective. For these patients with treatment-resistant neuropsychiatric illnesses, a main therapeutic option is electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Decades of research have found ECT to be highly effective; however, it can also result in adverse neurocognitive effects. Specifically, ECT results in disorientation after each session, anterograde amnesia for recently learned information, and retrograde amnesia for prev

Bigler et al. (2013, The Clinical Neuropsychologist) contend that weak methodology and poor quality of the studies comprising our recent meta-analysis led us to miss detecting a subgroup of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) characterized by persisting symptomatic complaint and positive biomarkers for neurological damage. Our computation of non-significant Q, tau(2), and I(2) statistics contradicts the existence of a subgroup of mTBI with poor outcome, or variation in effect size as a function of quality of research design. Consistent with this conclusion, the largest single contributor to our

Some clinical aspects of affective illness progression, such as episode-, stress-, and substance-induced sensitization, have been well documented in the literature, but others have received less attention. These include cognitive deficits, treatment-refractoriness, and neurobiological correlates of illness progression, which are the primary focus of this paper. We review the evidence that cognitive dysfunction, treatment resistance, medical comorbidities, and neurobiological abnormalities increase as a function of the number of prior episodes or duration of illness in the recurrent unipolar an

22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is a genetic syndrome associated with a microdeletion of the chromosome 22 band q11.2 with an estimated prevalence between 1:2,500 and 1:4,000. Studies of school-age children have shown that individuals with 22q11DS have high rates of psychiatric morbidity. In particular, by late adolescence, about 30% of patients with 22q11DS develop psychotic symptoms. One of the genes located in the microdeletion region of 22q11DS is the Catechol-O-Methyl transferase (COMT) which codes for an enzyme critically involved in the catabolic clearance of dopamine. COMT is criti

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Different neuroimaging techniques have been used to identify disease-specific functional brain networks in Parkinson's disease, atypical parkinsonian syndromes, and other movement disorders. This review highlights recent advances in network imaging and its clinical applications in movement disorders.
RECENT FINDINGS: Positron emission tomography and functional MRI studies have revealed distinct, abnormal metabolic brain networks and altered interregional connectivity in Parkinson's disease and related movement disorders. Network-level functional changes have been found to c

Reading comprehension is a very complex task that requires different cognitive processes and reading abilities over the life span. There are fewer studies of reading comprehension relative to investigations of word reading abilities. Reading comprehension difficulties, however, have been identified in two common and frequently overlapping childhood disorders: reading disability (RD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The nature of reading comprehension difficulties in these groups remains unclear. The performance of four groups of adolescents (RD, ADHD, comorbid ADHD and RD,

The co-occurrence of autism spectrum disorder and tuberous sclerosis complex has been recognized for decades. The prevalence of tuberous sclerosis complex in the autism spectrum disorder population is 1 to 4%, whereas features of autism spectrum disorder are present in 25 to 50% of individuals with tuberous sclerosis complex. The underlying reason for this association might be a nonspecific disruption of brain function owing to tuberous sclerosis complex, including tuber location, seizures and their effect on brain development, cognitive impairment, a disturbance in brain development in region

Sleepiness, cognitive performance, and quality of life are overlapping aspects of daytime function that may be affected in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome. The evidence is compatible with hypotheses that these deficits are reversible with treatment, particularly for patients with severe disease.

Anxiety disorders affect more than 19 million American adults and are prevalent in the geriatric population. Generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and other anxiety types can affect quality of life, precipitate social withdrawal, interfere with self-care, and exacerbate health problems. Anxiety disorders also may be associated with physical or mental disorders such as heart disease and depression. Patients may volunteer information about some anxiety disorders and be guarded about others. A proactive patient work-up can help reveal anxiety disorders in the primary care setting. Effecti
