Neuroprotective Effects of Exercise on the Morphology of Somatic Motoneurons Following the Death of Neighboring Motoneurons.

Background. Motoneuron loss is a severe medical problem that can result in loss of motor control and eventually death. We have previously de … se findings indicate that exercise following neural injury exerts a protective effect on motoneuron dendrites comparable to that seen with exogenous androgen treatment.

Developmental Alcohol Exposure Impairs Activity-Dependent S-Nitrosylation of NDEL1 for Neuronal Maturation.

Neuronal nitric oxide synthase is involved in diverse signaling cascades that regulate neuronal development and functions via S-Nitrosylation-mediated mechanism or the soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC)/cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) pathway activated by nitric oxide. Although it has been studied extensively in vitro and in invertebrate animals, effects on mammalian brain development and underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here we report that genetic deletion of "Nos1" disrupts dendritic development, whereas pharmacological inhibition of the sGC/cGMP pathway does not alter dend

Synapse replacement in the striatum of the adult rat following unilateral cortex ablation.

Defining the selective pattern of synapse replacement that occurs in different areas of the damaged brain is essential for predicting the limits of functional compensation that can be achieved after various types of brain injury. Here we describe the time course of dendritic reorganization, spine loss and recovery, and synapse replacement in the striatum following a unilateral cortex ablation. We found that the time course for the transient loss and recovery of dendritic spines on medium spiny I (MSI) neurons, the primary postsynaptic target for corticostriatal axons, paralleled the time cours

Reduced proportion of decidual DC-SIGN+ cells in human spontaneous abortion.

Recent studies showed that some functions of decidual dendritic cells appear to be essential for pregnancy. In humans, decidual dendritic cells are identifiable by their expression of DC-SIGN. We compared the subpopulations of human decidual DC-SIGN+ cells from first-trimester normal pregnancies and spontaneous abortions by flow cytometry. In normal decidua, DC-SIGN+ cells expressed antigens associated with immature myeloid dendritic cells. In samples from spontaneous abortions, we detected decidual DC-SIGN+ cells with an antigen phenotype equivalent to that of DC-SIGN+ cells from normal pregn

Molecular and cellular mechanisms for the polarized sorting of serotonin receptors: relevance for genesis and treatment of psychosis.

The 5-HT2A serotonin receptor represents the principal molecular target for the actions of both classic hallucinogens, which function as ago … olecular and cellular mechanisms governing the preferential targeting of 5-HT2A receptors to apical dendrites and dendritic spines. Uncovering the processes responsible for the polarization of 5-HT2A receptors to neuronal subdomains will likely provide crucial insights into the modulating mechanisms that can affect human cognition and perception.

Discrimination and learning of temporal input sequences in a cerebellar Purkinje cell model.

INTRODUCTION: Temporal information processing is essential for sequential contraction of various muscles with the appropriate timing and amplitude for fast and smooth motor control. These functions depend on dynamics of neural circuits, which consist of simple neurons that accumulate incoming spikes and emit other spikes. However, recent studies indicate that individual neurons can perform complex information processing through the nonlinear dynamics of dendrites with complex shapes and ion channels. Although we have extensive evidence that cerebellar circuits play a vital role in motor contro…

Classical complement cascade initiating C1q protein within neurons in the aged rhesus macaque dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment in schizophrenia, aging, and Alzheimer's disease is associated with spine and synapse loss from the dorsola … thin neurons. C1q was found near synapses, within terminals and in spines, but was also observed in dendrites, often near abnormal mitochondria. Similar analyses in aging rat mPFC corroborated the findings in rhesus macaques. C1q protein increasingly associated with PSD95 with age in macaque, consistent with its synaptic localization as evidenced by EM. CO …

Olfactory nerve-evoked, metabotropic glutamate receptor-mediated synaptic responses in rat olfactory bulb mitral cells.

The group I metabotropic glutamate receptor (mGluR) subtype, mGluR1, is highly expressed on the apical dendrites of olfactory bulb mitral cells and thus may be activated by glutamate released from olfactory nerve (ON) terminals. Previous studies have shown that mGluR1 agonists directly excite mitral cells. In the present study, we investigated the involvement of mGluR1 in ON-evoked responses in mitral cells in rat olfactory bulb slices using patch-clamp electrophysiology. In voltage-clamp recordings, the average EPSC evoked by single ON shocks or brief trains of ON stimulation (six pulses at 5…

The effect of antimitotic agents on the intraneuronal distribution of lysosomes.

We previously showed that a single injection of colchicine into the lateral cerebral ventricle of the rat causes a redistribution of lysosomes from their normal localization in neuronal cell bodies into dendrites. In the present report we have examined the time course and specificity of this effect using a variety of microtubule poisons. Dipeptidylaminopeptidase II (Dpp II), a lysosomal marker enzyme, histochemistry was used to visualize lysosomes at the light microscopic level. Acid phosphatase, another lysosomal enzyme, histochemistry was used to confirm the Dpp II localization of lysosomes.…

GABA neurons are the major cell type of the nucleus reticularis thalami.

Glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), the synthesizing enzyme for the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), has been localized in a large number of neuronal somata within the nucleus reticularis thalami (NR) of rat brain by light microscopic immunocytochemical methods. GAD-positive staining of neuronal somata and proximal dendrites is observed in the NR of normal (untreated) rats, and this staining is substantially enhanced following colchicine injection into the lateral cerebral ventricle. GAD-positive neuronal cell bodies are prominent throughout the dorsoventral and rostrocaudal ext…

Analysis of pyramidal neuron morphology in an inducible knockout of brain-derived neurotrophic factor.

BACKGROUND: The messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) for brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a regulator of pyramidal neuron dendritic spine density during development, is decreased in the prefrontal cortex of subjects with schizophrenia, and the level of BDNF mRNA expression is positively correlated with dendritic spine density in the same subjects. METHODS: To determine whether reduced BDNF mRNA expression might account for decreased spine density in schizophrenia, a knockout of the BDNF gene was induced in mice during embryogenesis or at 12 weeks of age. Quantitative assessments were ma

Two years' experience with Dialock and CLS (a new antimicrobial lock solution).

INTRODUCTION: Primary cicatricial alopecia (PCA) encompasses a heterogeneous group of inflammatory diseases characterized by the replacement of hair follicle structures by fibrous tissue. Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) and lichen planopilaris (LPP) are the most common causes of scarring alopecia. The distinction between both entities is often challenging because of significant clinical and histopathological overlap. AIM: We hypothesized that dendritic cells which are implicated in PCA pathogenesis can provide a reliable histopathological clue to distinguish between these two entities. MAT
