We report an outbreak of irritant contact dermatitis from diallylglycol carbonate monomer among factory employees making optical plastic lenses. Symptoms lessened after simple preventive methods were introduced. Further upgrading of production methods lessened symptoms still further and also restored the company's economic viability.

Poison ivy contact dermatitis is fairly common in the suburbia of this country among amateur gardeners and children. It commonly inflicts its poison on the exposed parts of the limbs. The vesicular or bullous skin lesions are quite disturbingly itchy. Scratching the itchy lesions often spreads the condition by transplanting the remanent resinous toxin to other parts of the body. The hospital records of 105 subjects with professional dermatitis, admitted at the Institute of Occupational Health of Verona between 1972 and 1985, were reviewed. Work sectors, chemicals, sites of dermatitis, latency and age of onset were evaluated. Contact allergic dermatitis were 80% while irritative ones were 10%. Metal-, construction- and tannery workers were more frequently involved. The most common causes were salts of heavy metals. The authors discuss results and remark the need of standardization in diagnostic procedures.

A pair of monozygous twins concordant for both duodenojejunal villous atrophy and dermatitis herpetiformis are described, the first example to be reported in the literature. The observation provides strong support for the concept of an underlying genetic component being involved in the pathogenesis of these two conditions.

We report a case of acute contact dermatitis caused by exposure to 2-chloracetophenone tear gas in the face. Within 3 days the contact dermatitis had disappeared without medical treatment, but 7 days after exposure, a scaly pruritic eruption developed at the site of the original exposure although no new contact with 2-chloracetophenone had taken place.

Localized persistent pigmented macules and plaques due to a chronic form of pigmented purpuric dermatitis are described in forty-two patients. The designation 'lichen aureus' for this eruption can be justified because of the striking yellowish or bronze-like colour assumed by many of the lesions. Thirty-seven patients with seborrheic dermatitis were treated topically with a 2% ketoconazole cream or its vehicle control in a double-blind study. The subjects were studied for numbers of Malassezia ovalis (Pityrosporum ovale) cells in their scalp scale; changes in numbers of yeast cells and morphology of M. ovalis were tabulated along with clinical assessment of improvement. The 2% ketoconazole cream, but not the placebo cream, reduced the numbers of viable yeast cells on the scalp. A 69-year-old man who 1 year previously got the diagnosis primary biliary cirrhosis presented a highly pruritic rash on the knees, elbows and in the inguinal region. Both clinically and histologically this was compatible with dermatitis herpetiformis, and dapsone treatment confirmed this. He was found to have jejunal atrophy, and after 1 year with gluten-free diet, biopsy showed almost full restoration of the villous pattern. He then only rarely had any skin problems.

A 47-year-old man suffering from colitis ulcerosa developed serious anaemia, oedema, stomatitis with burning tongue, dry skin and erosive lesions with peripheral spreading on the ankles. Histology and electron microscopy showed characteristic signs for necrolytic migratory erythema, zinc deficiency acrodermatitis, or pellagra. Decreased serum zinc level and response to oral zinc substitution finally proved the diagnosis of acquired zinc deficiency.

Forty horses having microfilariae of Onchocerca cervicalis in association with dermatitis, alopecia, and pruritus on the ventral midline were given a single IM injection of 0.2 mg of ivermectin/kg of body weight (June to August 1981). Three siblings with infantile-onset biotin-responsive multiple carboxylase deficiency are described. Recognition of the characteristic dermatologic manifestations, alopecia and periorificial dermatitis, should result in early diagnosis and institution of potentially lifesaving therapy with biotin. Other metabolic disorders may present a similar clinical picture. Immunologic dysfunction and/or aberration in lipid or branched chain amino acid metabolism may be the common pathophysiologic link in some or all of these disorders.
