Prosper Menière (1799-1862) was born in Angers, where his father was a merchant. He finished his medical studies in Paris and subsequently became an assistant at the Hôtel Dieu, first to the surgeon Dupuytren and later to the internist Chomel. Meanwhile he helped to combat an epidemic of cholera in the south of France, and he was personal physician to the imprisoned Duchess de Berry, who had returned from exile to reclaim the throne for the Bourbon dynasty. In 1838 he specialised in otology after he had been made head of the Institute for Deaf Mutes in Paris. In 1861 he described a group of pa

Bone anchored hearing aids (BAHA) achieve optimal acoustic coupling by means of direct bone conduction via an osseointegrated percutaneous titanium implant. Currently this system has a record of over 30 years of clinical application and reliability. Patients with bilateral hearing loss with air-bone gaps will benefit from bilateral BAHA fitting. Likewise, unilateral conductive hearing loss with normal hearing on the other side can be treated with a BAHA. New developments in this field include the BAHA Intenso and also novel implant systems, such as the Epiplating system by Medicon, the alpha s

Syndromic hearing loss that results from contiguous gene deletions is uncommon.Three families with a novel syndrome characterised by deafness and infertility are described. Linkage was established by completing a genome-wide scan and candidate genes in the linked region were screened by direct sequencing. The deleted region is about 100 kb long and involves four genes (KIAA0377, CKMT1B, STRC and CATSPER2), each of which has a telomeric duplicate. This genomic architecture underlies the mechanism by which these deletions occur. CATSPER2 and STRC are expressed in the sperm and inner ear, respect

The objective of the present study was to evaluate characteristics of the hearing function in the subjects exposed to intense occupational noise. The audiologic examination involved members of locomotive crews of the railroad transport and included impedancometry, threshold tonal audiometry, and registration of two types of evoked otoacoustic emission (delayed evoked otoacoustic emission and distortion product otoacoustic emission). Characteristics of otoacoustic emission in subjects with occupational loss of hearing were compared with those in patients with neurosensory deafness of a differen

The aim of this study was to provide more information on the causes of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in children cochlear implant candidates in Croatia. The retrospective study included 270 children candidates for cochlear implantation between January 1997 and January 2005 at our institution. The medical assessment of the candidates included the history, physical examination, radiologic evaluation of the temporal bone and audiologic assessment. A family history of SNHL had 82 (30.4%) candidates. The prematurity and/or complicated perinatal course was found in 35 (12.9%) of candidates. Comp

Reticular dysgenesis is an autosomal recessive form of human severe combined immunodeficiency characterized by an early differentiation arrest in the myeloid lineage and impaired lymphoid maturation. In addition, affected newborns have bilateral sensorineural deafness. Here we identify biallelic mutations in AK2 (adenylate kinase 2) in seven individuals affected with reticular dysgenesis. These mutations result in absent or strongly decreased protein expression. We then demonstrate that restoration of AK2 expression in the bone marrow cells of individuals with reticular dysgenesis overcomes th

Otosclerosis is a localized progressive disease of bone remodeling within the otic capsule of the human temporal bone. Histomorphologically, active cochlea otosclerosis (otospongiosis) is diagnosed in the presence of foci of demineralization in the otic capsule. The clinical symptoms of otosclerosis are associated with mixed and sensorineural hearing loss. With recent technological advances, diagnostic imaging of the inner ear is becoming more and more important in the evaluation of diseases affecting the cochlea. Studies could demonstrate that otosclerosis has a characteristic appearance on h

We have developed a technique to deliver cells to the inner ear without injuring the membranes that seal the endolymphatic and perilymphatic chambers. The integrity of these membranes is essential for normal hearing, and the technique should significantly reduce surgical trauma during cell transplantation. Embryonic stem cells transplanted at the internal auditory meatal portion of an atrophic auditory nerve migrated extensively along it. Four-five weeks after transplantation, the cells were found not only throughout the auditory nerve, but also in Rosenthal's canal and the scala media, the mo

Rieger syndrome is a dysembryogenetic disease in which labyrinthic damage can be associated with other genetic anomalies. The case presented here is of a patient who has bilateral dysgenesis of the iris, with bulbar atrophy and dyscoria. The patient does not present any malformation of the craniofacial structures, of the periumbilical skin, or of the skeletal bones. The case is, therefore, a variant of the Rieger syndrome labeled Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome. The patient reported a progressive sensation of auricular fullness, and liminal audiometry revealed a sensorineural hearing loss. Computed t

A retrospective review of 110 consecutive cases of chronic otitis media surgery was carried out in a large metropolitan public teaching hospital in the United States that serves the inner-city population. The purpose was to identify dural herniations and encephaloceles (DHE) as well as complications associated with these entities. Twenty-nine such patients (26.4%) were identified, 7 of which (6.4%) were encephaloceles. In patients with DHE, cholesteatoma was found in 83%, a labyrinthine fistula in 48%, preoperative facial paralysis in 14% (4 patients), facial nerve involvement by cholesteatoma

This posterolateral approach is directed to the petro-occipital skull base and is a combination of a suboccipital craniotomy, with an inferoposterior petrosectomy. The areas exposed are the jugular foramen, occipital condyle, lower clivus to the midline, petrous apex, tympanic cavity, the vertical portion of the intrapetrous carotid artery below the level of the eustachian tube, cerebellopontine angle, the jugulocarotid space in the upper neck. We evaluated 45 cases as follows: 13 chemodectomas, 14 lower cranial nerve schwannomas, 10 meningiomas, and 8 other lesions. The approach is indicated

The body generates many physiological sounds. One of the most prominent is that produced by the blood flowing inside the vessels with each heart beat. On the other hand, the cochlea is a very sensitive receptor with a low threshold. Given the anatomical close proximity of the carotid artery and other vessels to the inner ear, the possibility of its being stimulated is very high. Cochlear nucleus spontaneous as well sound-responding auditory units were studied. A close relationship between the heart beat, that is the blood flow, and the cochlear nucleus firing was demonstrated, in anesthetized

In the seventies PFANDER (Pfander, 1975) proposed a screening test with an impulse noise simulator to check the particular responsivity of soldiers on vulnerability of the inner ear concerning the impulse noise-induced hearing loss. According to a system developed at the University of Oldenburg (Germany) (Klug & Radek, 1987), we have constructed an impulse noise generator designed for our specific requirements that will be presented. The simulator consists of an electrical ignited impulse noise spark gap which is supplied by a 3.5 kV high voltage source. At a distance of 1.10 m from the center

It has been claimed that the inner ear is generally resistant to the effects of radiotherapy schedules commonly used for treating head and neck cancer. A study was made of 28 patients previously irradiated for parotid pleomorphic adenoma to assess the effect on the audiovestibular apparatus. The dose most commonly used was 50 Gy in 15 daily fractions over 20 days and the median interval between radiotherapy and assessment was 14 years. Of 28 patients 15 had significant hearing deficit on the irradiated side on audiometry and this was predominantly sensorineural in type. In addition seven of th

Temporal bone fractures may be complicated by intracranial haemorrhage, C.S.F. leakage and infection, damage to the middle and inner ear and damage to the seventh and eighth cranial nerves. Accurate early diagnosis is important to enable adequate investigation and prompt treatment of any complications. We present eight cases seen in a 12 month period in which a temporal bone fracture was not diagnosed at presentation in spite of a full clinical examination and standard skull radiographs. Five of these cases developed complications which resulted in their referral. The absence of a visible frac

Most pigment cells during embryogenesis arise from the cranial or truncal portion of the neural crest and migrate to the skin, hair bulbs, choroid of the eye, the inner ear, leptomeninges, and other tissues. Cells of the retinal pigment epithelium come from a different source, namely, the primitive forebrain, and are involved in the formation of the retina and the optic nerves and tracts. Most pigment cells in all parts of the body seem to be constant in number and function until approximately middle age (the fourth or fifth decade of life). Thereafter, the number of melanocytes in the skin, h

Aminoglycoside antibiotics are frequently employed in the treatment of serious infections caused by aerobic gram negative bacilli. The use of these potent antibacterial agents is limited by the risks of ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity. Aminoglycosides are excreted by glomerular filtration at a rate proportional to the serum concentration. Impaired renal excretion reduces the rate of clearance from the serum. Utilizing information about aminoglycoside pharmacokinetics, the susceptibility of infecting pathogens to aminoglycosides, and risk factors for ototoxicity, physicians can attempt to optimi

Cochlear synaptopathy produced by exposure to noise levels that cause only transient auditory threshold elevations is a condition that affects many people and is believed to contribute to poor speech discrimination in noisy environments. These functional deficits in hearing, without changes in sensitivity, have been called hidden hearing loss (HHL). It has been proposed that activity of the medial olivocochlear (MOC) system can ameliorate acoustic trauma effects. Here we explore the role of the MOC system in HHL by comparing the performance of two different mouse models: an α9 nicotinic recept

BACKGROUND: Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM), sometimes referred to as chronic otitis media (COM), is a chronic inflammation and infection of the middle ear and mastoid cavity, characterised by ear discharge (otorrhoea) through a perforated tympanic membrane. The predominant symptoms of CSOM are ear discharge and hearing loss. Topical antiseptics, one of the possible treatments for CSOM, inhibit the micro-organisms that may be responsible for the infection. Antiseptics can be used alone or in addition to other treatments for CSOM, such as antibiotics or ear cleaning (aural toileting). A

Introduction: During cochlear implantation, electrode insertion can cause cochlear damage, inflammation, and apoptosis, which can affect the residual hearing. Nanoparticles are increasingly studied as a way to increase the availability of inner ear protective factors. We studied the effect on rats of Pluronic-coated gold nanoparticles (Plu-AuNPs) containing dexamethasone, which were applied locally in the rat’s middle ear following the implant procedure. Methods: Seven rats were used in the study. The right ear served as a model for the Dex-Plu-AuNP group. Following the intracochlear dummy ele
