Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation would be an alternative to implantable cervical vagus nerve stimulation in some situation.

Implantable cervical vagus nerve stimulation (iVNS) is a representative and promising neuromodulation. However, the invasive nature restricts its application. Traditional auricular acupuncture treatment has a long history. The auricular branch of the vagus nerve (ABVN) is a branch on the surface of the ear. Some studies demonstrates that transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) would achieve similar effects as iVNS. TaVNS and iVNS share a common anatomical basis and acting mechanism. In this article, we made a comparison between iVNS and taVNS in indications and efficacy. The r

Effectiveness of transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation for the treatment of tinnitus: an interventional prospective controlled study.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this interventional non-randomised prospective controlled study was to assess the effectiveness of transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) in human subjects with tinnitus. DESIGN: The ParasymTM tVNS device was paired with an auditory stimulation. Treatment and observations were conducted over 12 weeks. Audiological evaluation was performed. Responses from a set of questionnaires and quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) before and after treatment were collected. Voice measurements were done to assess possible side-effects of tVNS. STUDY SAMPLE: The study inv

Effects of Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation (tVNS) on Action Planning: A Behavioural and EEG Study.

Action planning is an important decision-making process, which can be specially affected by environment. Response selection during action planning has been demonstrated to be modulated by tVNS. Therefore, tVNS shows a great potential for modulating the action planning process. We aimed to explore the tVNS-induced effect on action planning in behavioural and electrophysiology. Twenty-eight participants were randomly divided into two groups (active group and sham group). A single-blind, sham-controlled between-subject design was applied to explore the effect of online-tVNS (i.e., tVNS overlappin

Circadian stage-dependent and stimulation duration effects of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation on heart rate variability.

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) can improve autonomic nerve function and is currently undergoing extensive clinical research; however, its efficacy heterogeneity has caused great controversy. Heart rate variability (HRV), a biomarker reflecting autonomic function, exhibits a time-varying pattern with circadian rhythms, which may be the main reason for the inconsistent stimulation effects. To test this conjecture, we performed isochronous acute stimulation experiments at intervals of 12 h. The results showed that HRV indicators representing vagal nerve activity signific

Effects of Noninvasive Cervical Vagal Nerve Stimulation on Cognitive Performance But Not Brain Activation in Healthy Adults.

OBJECTIVES: While preliminary evidence suggests that noninvasive vagal nerve stimulation (nVNS) may enhance cognition, to our knowledge, no study has directly assessed the effects of nVNS on brain function and cognitive performance in healthy individuals. The aim of this study was therefore to assess whether nVNS enhances complex visuospatial problem solving in a normative sample. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to examine underlying neural substrates. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Participants received transcutaneous cervical nVNS (N = 15) or sham (N = 15) stimulation during a

Modulation of visual processing of food by transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS).

Present project is concerned with the possibility to modulate the neural regulation of food intake by non-invasive stimulation of the vagus nerve. This nerve carries viscero-afferent information from the gut and other internal organs and therefore serves an important role in ingestive behavior. The electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve (VNS) is a qualified procedure in the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy and depression. Since weight loss is a known common side effect of VNS treatment in patients with implanted devices, VNS is evaluated as a treatment of obesity. To investigate potenti

Short trains of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) have parameter-specific effects on heart rate.

BACKGROUND: Optimal parameters of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) are still undetermined. Given the vagus nerve's role in regulating heart rate (HR), it is important to determine safety and HR effects of various taVNS parameters. OBJECTIVE: We conducted two sequential trials to systematically test the effects of various taVNS parameters on HR. METHODS: 15 healthy individuals participated in the initial two-visit, crossover exploratory trial, receiving either tragus (active) or earlobe (control) stimulation each visit. Nine stimulation blocks of varying parameters (pu

[Deep brain stimulation in the treatment of torticollis and Meige syndrome].

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established and accepted treatment modality of generalized dystonia. The stereotactic target to be approached with DBS leads is the internal segment of the globus pallidus (GPi). Bilateral GPi stimulation in patients suffering from primary generalized dystonia reduced dystonic movement not only in the trunk and limbs but also in the neck and face. These observations have led to the use of GPi stimulation in patients with severe torticollis and Meige syndrome refractory to pharmacological agents as well to botulinum toxin injections. An increasing number of re

Desynchronization of brain rhythms with soft phase-resetting techniques.

Composite stimulation techniques are presented here which are based on a soft (i.e., slow and mild) reset. They effectively desynchronize a cluster of globally coupled phase oscillators in the presence of noise. A composite stimulus contains two qualitatively different stimuli. The first stimulus is either a periodic pulse train or a smooth, sinusoidal periodic stimulus with an entraining frequency close to the cluster's natural frequency. In the course of several periods of the entrainment, the cluster's dynamics is reset (restarted), independently of its initial dynamic state. The second sti

The orbicularis oculi reflexes in healthy premature and full-term newborns.

Blink reflexes were evoked both by mechanical tapping and electrical current delivered to the skin of the periorbital region in 62 healthy babies distributed in 2 groups: 29 full-term newborns and 33 prematures. The electrical activity of the orbicularis oculi muscle was recorded by means of bipolar surface electrodes in all cases. Both ipsilateral R1 and R2 electrically evoked responses were obtained. Occasionally we also observed a late R3 ipsilateral response. The R2 contralateral electrically evoked response was never observed in premature babies; it was present in about 80% of the full-te

[Auditory neuropathy (auditory neuropathy spectrum disorders): the approaches to diagnostics and rehabilitation].

Auditory neuropathies (auditory neuropathy spectrum disorders, ANSD) may be a consequence of dysfunction of inner hair cells and/or of synapses between these cells and auditory nerve fibers. Another cause of these disorders is supposed to be pathological changes in the auditory nerve itself. The outcome of the rehabilitative treatment of the patients presenting with this disorder depends on the quality of diagnosis and precise location of the pathological process. The present study involved 82 patients with auditory neuropathies. The audiological data obtained in the course of this work were c

Systolic improvement and mechanical resynchronization does not require electrical synchrony in the dilated failing heart with left bundle-branch block.

BACKGROUND: Biventricular (BiV) and left ventricular (LV) pacing similarly augment systolic function in left bundle-branch block (LBBB)-failing hearts despite different electrical activation. We tested whether electrical synchrony is required to achieve mechanical synchronization and functional benefit from pacing. METHODS AND RESULTS: Epicardial mapping, tagged MRI, and hemodynamics were obtained in dogs with LBBB-failing hearts during right atrial, LV, and BiV stimulation. BiV and LV both significantly improved chamber hemodynamics (eg, 25% increase in dP/dt(max) and aortic pulse pressure)

The effect of cyclic nucleotides on the release of 3H-dopamine from rat striatal slices.

Slices (1.0 mm thick and 0.4 cm in diameter) obtained from rat neostriatum were preincubated with 3H-dopamine (3H-DA; 0.8 mugM) for 30 minutes and then superfused at a rate of 1.0 ml/min in glass chambers (volume, 2 ml) for varying lenghts of time prior to electrical stimulation. Superfusate effluents were continuously collected and analyzed for 3H-DA and 3H-metabolites by liquid scintillation spectrometry after separation by alumina and Dowex 50 column chromatography. 3H-DA represented only a small proportion of the spontaneous overflow of radioactivity (9.8%) but represented the largest port

Modulating effects of antiasthmatic and antitussive drugs on autonomic neurotransmission in guinea-pig bronchial muscle in vitro.

Electrical field stimulation evoked a biphasic contraction of the guinea-pig isolated bronchi, consisting of a cholinergically mediated fast contraction followed by a non-cholinergically mediated slow contraction. Catecholamines, beta 2-stimulants, methylxanthines, antiallergic drugs, narcotic and non-narcotic antitussive drugs inhibited the neurogenic contractions not only by postjunctional depression of the response but also by prejunctional reduction of the transmitter release.

Cervicomedullary motor evoked responses in individuals with severe chronic hemiparesis post-stroke: a feasibility study.

Understanding the neural mechanisms underlying upper limb motor recovery after stroke remains a significant challenge in rehabilitation research. It has been proposed that individuals who show no motor-evoked potential (MEP) response to transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and are thus classified as MEP negative (MEP-) have limited potential for recovery in part due to damage of the corticospinal pathway. In this study, we investigate how individuals categorized as MEP- with TMS respond to stimulation of the corticospinal pathway at a subcortical level. We describe the methodology for elici

Sustained neural rhythms reveal endogenous oscillations supporting speech perception.

Rhythmic sensory or electrical stimulation will produce rhythmic brain responses. These rhythmic responses are often interpreted as endogenous neural oscillations aligned (or "entrained") to the stimulus rhythm. However, stimulus-aligned brain responses can also be explained as a sequence of evoked responses, which only appear regular due to the rhythmicity of the stimulus, without necessarily involving underlying neural oscillations. To distinguish evoked responses from true oscillatory activity, we tested whether rhythmic stimulation produces oscillatory responses which continue after the en

The Effect of Reference Electrode Position in Cochlear Implants.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the increase in power of cochlear implants (CI) as the reference electrode (RE) position changes. Patients in whom it is necessary to use the full power of the device to achieve the desired stimulation levels, this strategy will ensure that stimulation capability is maximized. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The variability in RE placement in the temporal bone has a measurable effect on the electrical current, impedance, and power consumption, and if the electrode position has a functional effect on the stimulation intensity. The following three approaches were u

Contribution of glutamatergic systems in locus coeruleus to nucleus paragigantocellularis stimulation-evoked behavior.

The role of extracellular glutamate, within the locus coeruleus, in mediation of the behavioral signs elicited by electrical stimulation of the nucleus paragigantocellularis (PGi) was investigated in conscious, opioid-naive rats. Each rat was prepared with a chronically implanted unilateral electrode within the PGi and a microdialysis guide cannula directed at the ipsilateral locus coeruleus. Opioid withdrawal-like behaviors (rearing, teeth-chattering, wet-dog shakes, etc.) and increases in extracellular glutamate concentrations within the locus coeruleus were evoked, in a frequency-dependent

Assessment of muscarinic transmission in the superior cervical and ciliary ganglion of the cat.

This study was undertaken to determine if muscarinic mechanisms are involved in synaptic transmission in the parasympathetic ciliary ganglion as has been clearly shown for sympathetic ganglia. Cats were anesthetized, and following topical ephedrine, pupillary constrictions were elicited by electrical stimulation of the intracranial oculomotor nucleus. Nictitating membrane contractions were evoked by electrical stimulation of the preganglionic cervical nerve. Frequency-response curves were repeated after infusion with hexamethonium (0.6-1.0 mg/kg min-1) and after subsequent administration of at
