Prevention of main dental diseases in children using herbal tea «dentesvita».

INTRODUCTION: Transcarpathian region refers to the climate-geographic zone with a low level of fluoride and iodine in the environment and as shown by the epidemiological survey «very high» according to WHO criteria for the level of intensity of main dental diseases. With the purpose of directing the implementation of the state policy in the field of health care and for the prevention of dental diseases, the industrial release of a functional food product - «DentesVita» enriched with iodine and fluorine - has been adjusted. The aim: Was to study the effectiveness of the use of functional food p

The Role of Mineral and Trace Element Supplementation in Exercise and Athletic Performance: A Systematic Review.

Minerals and trace elements (MTEs) are micronutrients involved in hundreds of biological processes. Deficiency in MTEs can negatively affect athletic performance. Approximately 50% of athletes have reported consuming some form of micronutrient supplement; however, there is limited data confirming their efficacy for improving performance. The aim of this study was to systematically review the role of MTEs in exercise and athletic performance. Six electronic databases and grey literature sources (MEDLINE; EMBASE; CINAHL and SportDISCUS; Web of Science and clinicaltrials.gov) were searched, in ac

A novel null mutation in the pyruvate dehydrogenase phosphatase catalytic subunit gene (PDP1) causing pyruvate dehydrogenase complex deficiency.

UNLABELLED: Congenital lactic acidosis due to pyruvate dehydrogenase phosphatase (PDP) deficiency is very rare. PDP regulates pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC) and defective PDP leads to PDC deficiency. We report a case with functional PDC deficiency with low activated (+dichloroacetate) and inactivated (+fluoride) PDC activities in lymphocytes and fibroblasts, normal activity of other mitochondrial enzymes in fibroblasts, and novel biallelic frameshift mutation in the PDP1 gene, c.575dupT (p.L192FfsX5), with absent PDP1 product in fibroblasts. Unexpectedly, the patient also had low branche

Electroactive biomaterial surface engineering effects on muscle cells differentiation.

Even though skeletal muscle cells can naturally regenerate as a response to insignificant tissue damages, more severe injuries can cause irreversible loss of muscle cells mass and/or function. Until now, cell therapies are not a good approach to treat those injuries. Biomaterials such as poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVDF, can improve muscle regeneration by presenting physical cues to muscle cells that mimic the natural regeneration environment. In this way, the ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of PVDF offer new opportunities for skeletal muscle tissue engineering once the piezoelectric

A fluorometric assay for lysosomal phospholipase A2 activity using fluorescence-labeled truncated oxidized phospholipid.

Lysosomal phospholipase A2 (LPLA2) is a key enzyme involved in the homeostasis of cellular phospholipids. Recently, LPLA2 was reported to preferentially degrade some truncated oxidized phospholipids at the sn-1 position. A commercially available, truncated oxidized phospholipid conjugated with a fluorescent dye, 1-palmitoyl-2-glutaroyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine-N-[4-(dipyrrometheneboron difluoride) butanoyl] (PGPE-BODIPY), was used to develop a specific assay for this enzyme. When recombinant mouse LPLA2 was incubated with liposomes consisting of 1,2-O-octadecyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphochol

Elastic TPU Mesh as Abdominal Wall Inlay Significantly Reduces Defect Size in a Minipig Model.

Background: The open abdomen with mesh implantation, followed by early reoperation with fascial closure, is a modern surgical approach in difficult clinical situations such as severe abdominal sepsis. As early fascial closure is not possible in many cases, mesh-mediated fascial traction is helpful for conditioning of a minimized ventral hernia after open abdomen. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical utilization of an innovative elastic thermoplastic polyurethane mesh (TPU) as an abdominal wall inlay in a minipig model. Methods: Ten minipigs were divided in two groups, either rece

Osteoid osteoma: multimodality imaging with focus on hybrid imaging.

Osteoid osteoma is a painful, benign, osteoblastic lesion that occurs in younger patients and affects the extremities or the axial skeleton. While plain film findings may suggest the diagnosis, in complex anatomical regions such as the spine, pelvis, wrist and foot advanced imaging modalities are often required. A typical nidus surrounded by sclerosis or cortical thickening characterizes osteoid osteoma on plain radiography and CT. MR is the cross-sectional imaging modality of choice for most musculoskeletal disorders. Unfortunately, extensive accompanying bone marrow oedema, soft-tissue alter

Cholinesterase Inhibitor Therapy in Alzheimer's Disease: The Limits and Tolerability of Irreversible CNS-Selective Acetylcholinesterase Inhibition in Primates.

Irreversible acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition accumulates to high levels in the central nervous system (CNS) because AChE turnover in the brain is much slower than in peripheral tissues. As expected from this CNS selectivity, the irreversible AChE inhibitor methanesulfonyl fluoride (MSF) produces significant cognitive improvement in Alzheimer's disease patients without the gastrointestinal toxicity that plagues other AChE inhibitors. However, without dose-limiting gastrointestinal toxicity, one shortcoming of the prior human studies of MSF is that the upper limits of CNS AChE inhibition

Erosive effects of pediatric liquid medicinal syrups on primary enamel: An in vitro comparative study.

CONTEXT: The use of liquid medicinal syrups in childhood is high owing to the reasons that children suffer from illness quite often. The acidic component in the formulations may cause erosion to the dental tissues. AIMS: The aim of this study is to evaluate the erosive potential of pediatric liquid medicinal syrups on the deciduous teeth. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of sixty extracted/exfoliated noncarious deciduous molars were used. Four medical syrups were used (viz., 1 - artificial saliva [control], 2 - Ferium XT, 3 - Crocin syrup, 4 - Ambrolite-D) and the teeth were equally divided int

What is the Best Root Surface Treatment for Avulsed Teeth?

Dental avulsion is the most severe type of traumatic tooth injuries since it causes damage to several structures and results in avulsion of the tooth from its socket. Management protocols for avulsed teeth should include management of the pulp and periodontal ligament (PDL) cells in order to improve the long-term prognosis and survival of these teeth. The prognosis of the treatment as well as the survival of an avulsed tooth depends on intrinsic and extrinsic factors, such as the duration of the tooth's extra-alveolar period, replantation time, the type of storage medium, PDL status and durati

Antimicrobial mouthrinse use as an adjunct method in peri-implant biofilm control.

Great possibilities for oral rehabilitation emerged as a result of scientific consolidation, as well as a large number of dental implant applications. Along with implants appeared diseases such as mucositis and peri-implantitis, requiring management through several strategies applied at different stages. Biofilm accumulation is associated with clinical signs manifest by both tooth and implant inflammation. With this in mind, regular and complete biofilm elimination becomes essential for disease prevention and host protection. Chemical control of biofilms, as an adjuvant to mechanical oral hygi

Biodegradation of high concentrations of halomethanes by a fermentative enrichment culture.

A fermentative enrichment culture (designated DHM-1) that grows on corn syrup was evaluated for its ability to cometabolically biodegrade high concentrations of chloroform (CF), carbon tetrachloride (CT), and trichlorofluoromethane (CFC-11). When provided with corn syrup and vitamin B12 (0.03 mol B12 per mol CF), DHM-1 grew and biodegraded up to 2,000 mg/L of CF in 180 days, with only minor transient accumulation of dichloromethane and chloromethane. CT (15 mg/L) and CFC-11 (25 mg/L) were also biodegraded without significant accumulation of halomethane daughter products. The rate of CF biodegr
