Epidemiology, prevention methods, and risk factors of foot blisters in French trail ultramarathons.

BACKGROUND: Blisters are a common running injury and are known to limit runners' performance. There have been many studies on the subject with contrasting results. It would therefore be useful to describe more clearly blister epidemiology, blister prevention methods, and risk factors of blister development. METHODS: This study is a retrospective anonymous, post-race survey. Runners were contacted by email after races in France during the summer and autumn of 2021 and asked to fill-in an online survey about their experience with blisters and running experiences. RESULTS: Five hundred and thir

Assessing falls in the elderly population using G-STRIDE foot-mounted inertial sensor.

Falls are one of the main concerns in the elderly population due to their high prevalence and associated consequences. Guidelines for the management of the elder with falls are comprised of multidimensional assessments, especially gait and balance. Daily clinical practice needs for timely, effortless, and precise tools to assess gait. This work presents the clinical validation of the G-STRIDE system, a 6-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) with onboard processing algorithms, that allows the calculation of walking-related metrics correlated with clinical markers of fall risk. A cross-sectional

Nano hydrogel-based oxygen-releasing stem cell transplantation system for treating diabetic foot.

The employment of stem cells and hydrogel is widespread in contemporary clinical approaches to treating diabetic foot ulcers. However, the hypoxic conditions in the surrounding lesion tissue lead to a low stem cell survival rate following transplantation. This research introduces a novel hydrogel with superior oxygen permeability and biocompatibility, serving as a vehicle for developing a stem cell transplantation system incorporating oxygen-releasing microspheres and cardiosphere-derived stem cells (CDCs). By optimizing the peroxidase fixation quantity on the microsphere surface and the oxyge…

Transcriptomic identification of genes expressed in invasive S. aureus diabetic foot ulcer infection.

INTRODUCTION: Infection in diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) is one of the major complications associated with patients with diabetes. Staphylococcus aureus is the most common offending pathogen in patients with infected DFU. Previous studies have suggested the application of species-specific antibodies against S. aureus for diagnosis and monitoring treatment response. Early and accurate identification of the main pathogen is critical for management of DFU infection. Understanding the host immune response against species-specific infection may facilitate diagnosis and may suggest potential intervent…

Cerium oxide nanoparticles in diabetic foot ulcer management: Advances, limitations, and future directions.

Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is one of the most serious complications of diabetes, potentially resulting in wound infection and amputation under severe circumstances. Oxidative stress and dysbiosis are the primary factors that delay wound healing, posing challenges to effective treatment. Unfortunately, conventional approaches in these aspects have proven satisfactory in achieving curative outcomes. Recent research has increasingly focused on using nanoparticles, leveraging their potential in wound dressing and medication delivery. Their unique physical properties further enhance their therapeuti…

Repurposing alagebrium for diabetic foot ulcer healing: Impact on AGEs/NFκB/NOX1 signaling.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a common diabetic complication associated with disability and reduced quality of life. Available therapeutics are not sufficient to combat the spread of DFU. Here we aim to investigate the impact of alagebrium, an advanced glycation end product (AGE)-crosslink breaker, on the healing of DFU. METHODS: Diabetes was induced in Wistar rats by STZ, and after four weeks, wound was induced on the foot. Alagebrium (10 mg/kg) was administered orally for 14 days, and wound size was measured every 3 days. Behavioral tests i.e., hot plate and footprint tests, were…

Selective Tibial Neurotomy Outcomes for Spastic Equinovarus Foot: Patient Expectations and Functional Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Spastic equinovarus foot (SEF) is a common dysfunctional foot posture after stroke that impairs balance and mobility. Selective tibial neurotomy (STN) is a simple but underutilized surgical option that can effectively address critical aspects of SEF and thereby provide enduring quality of life gains. There are few studies that examine both functional outcomes and patient satisfaction with this treatment option. OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the patient goals that motivated their decision to undergo the procedure and compare subjective and objective changes in balance and functional mobi…

A complex structural variant near SOX3 causes X-linked split-hand/foot malformation.

Split-hand/foot malformation (SHFM) is a congenital limb defect most typically presenting with median clefts in hands and/or feet, that can occur in a syndromic context as well as in isolated form. SHFM is caused by failure to maintain normal apical ectodermal ridge function during limb development. Although several genes and contiguous gene syndromes are implicated in the monogenic etiology of isolated SHFM, the disorder remains genetically unexplained for many families and associated genetic loci. We describe a family with isolated X-linked SHFM, for which the causative variant could be dete…

Complementary Gene Therapy after Revascularization with the Saphenous Vein in Diabetic Foot Syndrome.

Diabetic foot syndrome (DFS) is one of the most serious macroangiopathic complications of diabetes. The primary treatment option is revascularization, but complementary therapies are still being sought. The study group consisted of 18 patients diagnosed with ischemic ulcerative and necrotic lesions in DFS. Patients underwent revascularization procedures and, due to unsatisfactory healing of the lesions, were randomly allocated to two groups: a group in which bicistronic VEGF165/HGF plasmid was administered and a control group in which saline placebo was administered. Before gene therapy admini…
