Anterior radial head subluxation in primary elbow osteoarthritis.

PURPOSE: To investigate elbows with primary osteoarthritis (OA) for the presence of anterior radial head subluxation. METHODS: A total of 71 patients with elbow osteoarthritis and 45 with lateral epicondylitis were initially identified. The baseline characteristics and preoperative elbow X-rays of consecutive patients that had been clinically confirmed with elbow OA or lateral epicondylitis between March 2011 and January 2020 were then retrospectively reviewed. The radiocapitellar ratio (RCR; the ratio of the displacement of the radial head about the diameter of the capitulum) was calculated

Salvage of Devascularized and Amputated Upper Extremity Digits with Temporary Ectopic Replantation: Our Clinical Series.

BACKGROUND: One of the reasons for unsuccessful replantation is recipient site problems. In cases where proximal stump status cannot be predicted exactly, reamputation may be required depending on the result of infection and tissue necrosis. The ectopic banking method has been defined for this type of injury. In this study, we presented the amputated or devascularized upper extremity digit ectopic banking application results in our clinical practice. METHODS: Nineteen digits (17 patients) banking ectopically were included in the study. All digits ectopically banked in the forearm volar of the…

Trends and epidemiology of radial head subluxation in the United States from 2004 to 2018.

BACKGROUND: Increased body mass may predispose children to a greater risk for radial head subluxation (RHS). Recent studies in the literature have reported a plateau in obesity prevalence among infants and toddlers. This study sought to examine recent epidemiological trends in RHS incidence from 2004 to 2018 using the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System database to determine how obesity patterns may affect RHS incidence. METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) database was queried for patients 6 years of age or younger presenting with radial head subluxa

Pointing in a different direction: a case of bilateral absence of extensor indicis.

Understanding anatomical variations as well as normal anatomy of the muscles and tendons of the hand is vital for successful clinical evaluation and surgery. A number of extensor muscle and tendon variations have been reported in the literature, including duplication, triplication, and absence. We report a rare anatomical variation that includes bilateral absence of the extensor indicis (EI) muscles and bilateral duplication of the extensor digitorum (ED) tendon to the second digit in the forearm of an 83-year-old male cadaver during routine upper limbs dissection. In the present case, only th…

Accessory head of the extensor carpi radialis longus muscle merging with extensor carpi radialis brevis muscle.

PURPOSE: The retention and capture functions of hand can be achieved by the consistent manner work of the extensor and flexor muscles. Therefore, it is important to know variations of the extensor and flexor muscles. METHODS: During an educational dissection, accessory heads of the extensor carpi radialis longus muscle were found on the right side in a Korean cadaver. RESULTS: The extensor carpi radialis longus muscle was originated from the lateral supracondylar ridge of the humerus and trifurcated into three heads as lateral, intermediated, and medial heads. The lateral and intermediated h

Targeted Muscle Reinnervation for Transradial Amputation: Description of Operative Technique.

Targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) is a revolutionary surgical technique that, together with advances in upper extremity prostheses and advanced neuromuscular pattern recognition, allows intuitive and coordinated control in multiple planes of motion for shoulder disarticulation and transhumeral amputees. TMR also may provide improvement in neuroma-related pain and may represent an opportunity for sensory reinnervation as advances in prostheses and haptic feedback progress. Although most commonly utilized following shoulder disarticulation and transhumeral amputations, TMR techniques also repr

Neuromuscular ultrasound in the evaluation of inclusion body myositis.

This case report illustrates the role of using neuromuscular ultrasound to diagnose inclusion body myositis (IBM) in a patient who was previously diagnosed with polymyositis. Emerging studies have demonstrated the accuracy of MRI in detecting the selective involvement of the flexor digitorum profundus muscle in those with IBM. However, there have been only few reports on the use of ultrasound in diagnosing this condition. Our case demonstrates the benefit of using this ultrasonographic approach, which is simple, clear, inexpensive, painless and radiation-free, and provides another modality to

Uncommon course of the ulnar artery through the pronator teres muscle.

In this paper, we describe a very rare variant in the course of the ulnar artery that we encountered in dissecting the right upper limb of a 74-year-old man. The ulnar artery arose standardly from the brachial artery in the cubital fossa. However, its ensuing course differed from the norm. The artery entered together with the ulnar vein and median nerve into the pronator canal (between the humeral and ulnar heads of the pronator teres). Further, the ulnar artery descended classically to the ulnar side of the forearm between the flexor carpi ulnaris and flexor digitorum superficialis. Knowledge…

Displaced dorsal metaphyseal cortex associated with delayed extensor pollicis longus tendon entrapment in a pediatric Smith's fracture.

Extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon entrapment has been rarely reported as a complication of closed treatment of a pediatric Smith's type distal radius fractures. This article presents the unique case of an initially functional EPL tendon that became entrapped in fracture callus in a 9-year-old boy, the youngest reported in the literature.

Sonographic appearance of nontraumatic tear of flexor carpi radialis muscle-a case report.

We present an unusual case of a man with a nontraumatic tear of the flexor carpi radialis muscle after a regular swimming exercise, without known precipitation factors. The muscle tear was diagnosed by ultrasonography, which showed a cystic mass with increased peripheral vascularity, and was confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging. After conservative treatment, follow-up ultrasonography showed resolution of the hematoma. The patient was able to continue swimming without pain or limitation of function.

Presentation of the microscopic vascular architecture of the radial head using a sequential plastination technique.

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the peri- and intraosseous vascular architecture of the radial head and vascular interaction with surgical implants. Seventeen fresh human cadaveric elbows were sequentially plastinated beginning with arterial injection, followed by block and slice plastination of the whole elbow. With this technique, we obtained completely transparent cadaveric slices in which the peri- and intraosseous vascular architecture could be studied in its neutral position. In six of these elbows, radial head osteosynthesis was imitated with miniplates or fine threaded K-w
