Spondylolysis in fast bowlers: principles of prevention and a survey of awareness among cricket coaches.

Back injury in general, and spondylolysis in particular, represents a serious threat to the fast bowler. Hereditary factors, poor technique, overuse, and poor preparation for fast bowling may combine to produce the 'at risk' bowler. Three first-class county coaches were interviewed to establish a level of awareness of the lesion, with an emphasis on preparation of fast bowlers and the roles of technique alteration and bowling prescription in reducing the risk of back injury.

Traditional birth attendants in an endemic area of tetanus neonatorum in Thailand: pitfalls in the control program.

A survey of the characteristics of traditional birth attendants in Krabi Province, Thailand, where the incidence rate of tetanus neonatorum was the highest in the country, was conducted in order to obtain background information necessary for planning a training curriculum and to evaluate previous training courses. Five second year medical students were used as research assistants. After the questionnaire was constructed and tested, the students went to visit a sample of 116 traditional birth attendants (TBAs) to interview them about their personal backgrounds, techniques and practices in deliv

Motivations for adolescents' first visit to a family planning clinic.

Although family planning clinics routinely gather data on referral sources and primary reasons for visits, little is known about the "precipitating events" which motivate young women to make an appointment or show up at a clinic on a given day. In this study, 150 new patients at a large urban clinic were interviewed to determine what events or advice specifically led to their decision to approach a family planning clinic for the first time. The roles of pregnancy scares, advice from significant others, and situational factors in motivating service use are presented along with a discussion of t

Family planning services for persons handicapped by mental retardation.

The National Children's Center, Inc., and Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington joined in organizing a special family planning service for persons handicapped with mental retardation. The limited utilization, despite considerable community recruitment efforts, and the few problems encountered with patients served suggest that handicapped individuals can be seen at lower cost and at greater efficiency in regularly scheduled clinics, provided staff are attuned to their special needs. Informal interviews with residential center and clinic staff, with parents, and with clients confirm the

Provider perspectives on HPV vaccine hesitancy in the post-COVID-19 era.

While HPV vaccination is effective in prevention of many HPV-associated cancers, only 61.4% of US adolescents were up to date on their HPV vaccinations in 2023. In the period following the COVID-19 pandemic, a decrease in vaccine uptake was reported, along with a rise in vaccine hesitancy. This study aimed to understand these changes to HPV vaccination and vaccine hesitancy that occurred following the COVID-19 pandemic from providers' perspectives. We conducted 1-hour interviews with 12 participants over video calls that were then de-identified and transcribed. Eleven out of 12 providers notic

Differences in breast self-examination techniques between Caucasian and African American elderly women.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of breast self-examination (BSE) is controversial, recommendations to women are mixed, and reported differences by race in BSE are contrary to what is expected. We attribute this, in part, to measurement error in studies assessing the effectiveness of BSE. We assess differences by race in self-reported BSE while controlling selected sociodemographic indicators, BSE training, embarrassment, and perceived competence. METHODS: Data are from personal interviews with 1011 women ages 50 and older, with approximately equal numbers of African Americans and Caucasians reportin

Results of two worldwide surveys into physician awareness and perceptions of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases.

An omnibus survey of microbiologists (n = 400) and a survey of participants (n = 49) in the Meropenem Yearly Susceptibility Test Information Collection (MYSTIC) programme were conducted to determine the awareness and prevalence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs), and the regularity and method of screening. Of the omnibus survey participants, 69% screened regularly for ESBLs, compared with 83% of MYSTIC participants. In both surveys, ESBLs were more common in Klebsiella pneumoniae (73% and 79%, respectively) and Escherichia coli (63% and 81%, respectively) than in other bacteria. The

Barriers to men who have sex with men attending HIV related health services in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The HIV/AIDS disease burden is disproportionately high among men who have sex with men (MSM) worldwide. If this group will continue to be ignored they will continue to be the focus of HIV infection to the general population. This study explored barriers impeding MSM utilizing the HIV related health services currently available. The objectives of the study were to: (i) determine how stigma and discrimination affect MSM attendance to HIV related health services; (ii) determine how health care worker's (HCW's) practices and attitudes towards MSM affect their attendance to HIV related health servi

Fear of fluoride.

Discusses how dental and medical scares have resulted in a "culture of fear" which has damaged patients and dentists. Forty years of pessimism have created a demoralised and risk-averse society. The reality of a steadily improving world demands a new attitude of rational optimism and a healthy scepticism about new scares.

Primary HPV Testing for Cervical Cancer Screening Among Family Medicine Educators.

BACKGROUND: Half of the women who develop cervical cancer in the US have never had a cervical cancer screen. Self-sampling is an equivalent technique to the invasive speculum exam. We aim to evaluate the current knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors toward self-sampled primary HPV testing in family medicine. METHODS: The annual cross-sectional survey of the Council of Academic Family Medicine's general membership included knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about primary human papillomavirus (HPV) screening using self-sampling. The knowledge questions were based on current guidelines, as defined
