Suppression of nociceptive responses by spinal mu opioid agonists: effects of stimulus intensity and agonist efficacy.

To determine the influence of stimulation intensity on dose-response curves of three analgesics in halothane-anesthetized rats, continued immersion of the tail in 52.5 degrees C or 60 degrees C water for 15 s results first in a nociceptive reflex tail movement (tail flick = 2.8 +/- 0.4 s and 1.4 +/- 0.2 s, respectively), and a progressive increase in arterial blood pressure (delta BP = 21 +/- 1 and 24 +/- 1 mm Hg) and heart rate (delta HR = 27 +/- 2 and 32 +/- 2 beats/min). Intrathecally administered mu opioids, morphine (MOR), sufentanil (SUF), and [D-Ala2-N-Phe4,Gly-ol]-enkephalin (DAG), pro

Stent Thrombosis Risk Over Time on the Basis of Clinical Presentation and Platelet Reactivity: Analysis From ADAPT-DES.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the risk period for increased stent thrombosis (ST) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) and whether this increased risk is related to high platelet reactivity (HPR). BACKGROUND: ST risk after PCI is higher among patients with ACS than those with stable ischemic heart disease. When ST risk is highest in patients with ACS and how that is affected by HPR is unknown. METHODS: Using the ADAPT-DES (Assessment of Dual Antiplatelet Therapy With Drug-Eluting Stents) registry, ST rates during

Triiodothyroacetic acid exerts tissue-specific thyromimetic effects without tachycardia and hyperthermia in male mice.

OBJECTIVE: Thyroid hormones regulate cardiovascular functions and energy homeostasis, including thermogenesis, through binding to nuclear thyroid hormone receptors. The thyroid hormone analog 3,3',5-triiodothyroacetic acid (TRIAC) has recently emerged as a therapeutic candidate for thyroid hormone transporter deficiencies (Allan-Herndon-Dudley syndrome) or thyroid hormone resistance β. Although TRIAC shows promise for these conditions, a comprehensive characterization focusing on heart and body temperature regulation has not been systematically performed in mice. METHODS: As this knowledge is

Case Report: Integrated cardiovascular and respiratory training as a novel therapeutic approach in a case of painful left bundle branch block.

BACKGROUND: Left bundle branch block (LBBB) is a heart rate (HR)-dependent cardiac conduction disorder that may occur in the absence of structural heart disease and can be associated with painful episodes. Evidence supporting exercise-based interventions in this setting is limited. We report the case of a 41-year-old woman with paroxysmal, painful LBBB, with onset occurring marginally above resting HR. METHODS: After a diagnostic evaluation demonstrating preserved biventricular function, absence of myocardial ischemia, and normal hemodynamic responses, a 10-month supervised training program w

Cardiac Sympathetic Nerve Activity Is Not Elevated in Ovine Hypertensive HFpEF.

BACKGROUND: The sympathetic nervous system is a crucial mediator of cardiovascular variables during exercise. However, its role in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), where exercise intolerance is a cardinal feature, is poorly understood. Currently, there is scant and no clear evidence of heightened cardiac sympathetic nerve activity (CSNA) in HFpEF, which might explain why β-blockers lack convincing prognostic benefit in this syndrome. Accordingly, we utilized gold standard direct recordings to test the hypothesis that resting levels of CSNA are not elevated in HFpEF. We a

Cardio-Metabolic Risk in Adults Born Preterm: A Narrative Review.

Preterm birth has evolved from being an acute neonatal challenge to a lifelong health determinant, as advances in neonatal care have markedly improved the survival of very and extremely preterm infants. This narrative review synthesizes epidemiological and mechanistic evidence linking preterm birth with heightened cardiometabolic risk across the life course. In adulthood, individuals born preterm demonstrate increased rates of heart failure, ischemic heart disease, stroke, atrial fibrillation, and diabetes. Beneath these overt clinical outcomes lies a distinct phenotype characterized by increa

Impact of anesthesia on micromagnetic stimulation (μMS) of the vagus nerve.

To treat diseases associated with vagal nerve control of peripheral organs, it is necessary to selectively activate efferent and afferent fibers in the vagus. As a result of the nerve's complex anatomy, fiber-specific activation proves challenging. Spatially selective neuromodulation using micromagnetic stimulation(μMS) is showing incredible promise. This neuromodulation technique uses microcoils(μcoils) to generate magnetic fields by powering them with a time-varying current. Following the principles of Faraday's law of induction, a highly directional electric field is induced in the nerve fr

Prognostic implication of glomerular filtration rates in patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension who have undergone balloon pulmonary angioplasty.

Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) plays a key role in the deterioration of lung hemodynamics and contributes to secondary dysfunction of the right heart, which is consistently accompanied by systemic malperfusion and a reduced glomerular filtration rate (GFR). The prognosis of CTEPH is markedly influenced by renal function. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the prognostic value of GFR in patients with CTEPH who have undergone balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA). From December 2012 to September 2020, a total of 47 patients diagnosed with CTEPH who received BPA wer
