The Osiris gene family is believed to play important roles in insect biology. Previous studies mainly focused on the roles of Osiris in Drorophila, how Osiris operates during the development of other species remains largely unknown. Here, we investigated the role of LmOsi17 in development of the hemimetabolous insect Locusta migratoria. LmOsi17 was highly expressed in the intestinal tract of nymphs. Knockdown of LmOsi17 by RNA interference (RNAi) in nymphs resulted in growth defects. The dsLmOsi17-injected nymphs did not increase in body weight or size and eventually died. Immunohistochemical

A 87-year-old man presented to our hospital with intermittent abdominal pain. We diagnosed intussusception of the small intestine by CT and performed laparoscopic-assisted partial resection of the small intestine. It was diagnosed as small intestine leiomyosarcoma by pathological examination and the operation was curative. Leiomyosarcoma is rare among small intestinal tumors, and since 1999, when immunostaining was used to define small intestinal leiomyosarcoma, there have been only 15 confirmed cases in Japan, including our own case. Of the 15 cases, 5 died within an average of about 17 month

The proximal part of the small intestine, including duodenum and jejunum, is not only dedicated to nutrient digestion and absorption but is also a highly regulated immune site exposed to environmental factors. Host-protective responses against pathogens and tolerance to food antigens are essential functions in the small intestine. The cellular ecology and molecular pathways to maintain those functions are complex. Maladaptation is highlighted by common immune-mediated diseases such as coeliac disease, environmental enteric dysfunction or duodenal Crohn's disease. An expanding spectrum of more

Intestinal ultrasound (IUS) has recently become the imaging technique of choice for patients with different types of intestinal inflammation. IUS has a high sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value when diagnosing Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. Further, it is now the preferred imaging modality for routine IBD reevaluations because of its non-invasiveness, cost-effectiveness, availability (at least in Europe), and reproducibility in all age groups. However, the clinical success of IUS requires IUS training for doctors and technicians who perform

Intestinal choriocarcinoma is a very rare phenomenon. This is the first reported case of intestinal choriocarcinoma following an ectopic pregnancy. We report a 24 year-old woman who presented with severe abdominal pain, distension, and vomiting. She had a history of an ectopic pregnancy nine months prior. Emergent laparotomy exploration revealed abscess formation and obstructions at two sites in the small intestine, with unremarkable gynecological organs. The obstructed sections of the intestinal were excised and subsequently diagnosed as intestinal choriocarcinoma in histopathological evaluat

A 35-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with severe right iliac fossa pain with features of subacute intestinal obstruction and recurrent episodes of similar pain in the past. CT scan showed a mass with fluid collection with no trace of the appendix in the right iliac fossa. The patient was taken up for a diagnostic laparoscopy and proceeded. Operative findings were that of a mass in the lumen of the terminal ileum just 6 inches from the ileocaecal junction. Normal pelvis with normal uterus and ovaries. The patient underwent a laparoscopic resection of the terminal ileum and

Vitamin D hydroxylation in the liver/kidney results in conversion to its physiologically active form of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1,25(OH)2D … n in cultured cells. In addition, we examined the expression level and regulation of CYP enzymes in intestines from mice. The expression of CYP3A or CYP24A1 significantly reduced 1,25(OH)2D3-VDRE activity. Moreover, in mice, Cyp24a1 mRNA was significantly induced by 1,25(OH)2D3 in the intestine, but a mature form (approximately 55 kDa protein) was also expre …

Alterations in intestinal structure, mechanics and physiology underlie acute and chronic intestinal conditions, many of which are influenced by dysregulation of microbiome, peristalsis, stroma or immune responses. Studying human intestinal physiology or pathophysiology is difficult in preclinical animal models because their microbiomes and immune systems differ from those of humans. Although advances in organoid culture partially overcome this challenge, intestinal organoids still lack crucial features that are necessary to study functions central to intestinal health and disease, such as dige

UNLABELLED: Human noroviruses (HuNoVs) are a significant cause of epidemic and sporadic acute gastroenteritis worldwide. The lack of a reproducible culture system hindered the study of HuNoV replication and pathogenesis for almost a half-century. This barrier was overcome with our successful cultivation of multiple HuNoV strains in human intestinal enteroids (HIEs), which has significantly advanced HuNoV research. We optimized culture media conditions and generated genetically-modified HIE cultures to enhance HuNoV replication in HIEs. Building upon these achievements, we now present new insig

Typhoid intestinal perforation (TIP) is a leading cause of peritonitis and indication for emergency surgery in Africa, with reported mortality rates up to 30% in pediatric patients. Currently, data on TIP in Western databases are primarily from countries that speak English, likely due to non-English publication and citation biases. Despite the high burden of infectious diseases in Francophone Africa, data from these countries regarding TIP remain limited. This study aims to highlight the incidence and morbidity of TIP in Francophone African countries using an extended search algorithm. We cond

Migraine is a common and debilitating neurological disorder characterized by the recurrent attack of pulsating headaches typically localized on one side of the head associated with other disabling symptoms, such as nausea, increased sensitivity to light, sound and smell and mood changes. Various clinical factors, including the excessive use of migraine medication, inadequate acute treatment and stressful events, can contribute to the worsening of the condition, which may evolve to chronic migraine, that is, a headache present on >15 days/month for at least 3 months. Chronic migraine is frequen

BACKGROUND: Acute illness states with increased metabolic demand can precipitate severe thiamine deficiency if physiologic needs exceed endogenous stores and supplementation. Patients with preexisting risk factors such as parenteral nutrition (PN) dependence, eating disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, or surgeries are especially vulnerable.
CASE SUMMARY: A 9-year-old girl with short bowel syndrome receiving long-term PN, including standard thiamine supplementation, presented with refractory shock following aspiration. Profound hyperlactatemia, cardiac dysfunction, and vasoactive requiremen

Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract (Lequet et al., 2017). It results from incomplete obliteration of the vitelline (omphaloenteric) duct. Observed diverticulum complications include inflammation and perforation, hemorrhage and obstruction (Kawamoto et al., 2015). We are reporting on a case of Meckel's diverticulum revealed by acute intestinal obstruction.

Postnatal establishment of enteric metabolic, host-microbial and immune homeostasis is the result of precisely timed and tightly regulated developmental and adaptive processes. Here, we show that infection with the invasive enteropathogen Salmonella Typhimurium results in accelerated maturation of the neonatal epithelium with premature appearance of antimicrobial, metabolic, developmental, and regenerative features of the adult tissue. Using conditional Myd88-deficient mice, we identify the critical contribution of immune cell-derived mediators. Cytokine stimulation of neonatal intestinal epit

INTRODUCTION: The small intestine, as the main digestion and absorption site of the gastrointestinal tract, is often overlooked in studies, and the overall microbiota does not reflect the makeup of the microbiota in different segments of the intestine. Therefore, we aimed to exclude the influence of routine ICU treatment measures on sepsis patients and observed changes in the diversity and abundance of gut microbiota in different intestinal segments of septic mice.
METHODS: The mice were randomly divided into the CLP6h group and the sham group. The contents of the colon and small intestine of

PURPOSE: Studies have shown that atherosclerotic plaques are associated with changes in the microbial composition of the intestinal flora and obesity, and that the small intestine plays an irreplaceable role in regulating intestinal flora homeostasis, but the role of the small intestine in the development of obesity-related atherosclerosis remains understudied. Therefore, this study explores the role of the small intestine in obesity-induced atherosclerosis and its molecular mechanisms.
METHODS: In the GSE59054 data, small intestine tissue samples from 3 normal and 3 obese mice were analyzed
