Edward F. Knipling: titan and driving force in ecologically selective area-wide pest management.

Few entomologists have impacted insect pest management as profoundly as Edward F Knipling (1909-2000). During WWII, Knipling and his colleagues developed highly effective measures to protect both military personnel and civilian populations from major arthropod-borne diseases. The sterile insect technique was Knipling's conception, and he successfully guided its development and use against the screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax Coquerel, and against various other pests. He inspired and guided the development of a wide range of ecologically selective methods of insect detection and suppression.

First record of Aedes (Stegomyia) unilineatus in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Entomological surveillance was conducted in Asir, Jizan, and Makkah regions, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, during December 2000 in response to an outbreak of Rift Valley fever. Aedes (Stegomyia) unilineatus was collected in CO2-baited Centers for Disease Control miniature light traps at 4 widely spaced sites. This represents the 1st record of this species from the Arabian Peninsula. Previously, the distribution of Ae. unilineatus included Africa, Pakistan, and India. No arboviruses were isolated from 18 females tested by Vero cell plaque assay.

Mosquitoes captured in a horse-baited stable trap in southeast Louisiana.

A mosquito study based on collections from horse-baited stable traps was conducted in 1993 and 1994 at 3 sites in geographically and ecologically distinct areas of St. Tammany Parish (southeastern Louisiana) to determine the major horse-feeding mosquito species that could be possible bridging and epidemic vectors of eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus. A total of 4,535 mosquitoes in 1993 and 23,906 in 1994 involving 26 species were collected, of which, depending on the site, Culex salinarius, Cx. (Melanoconion) spp., Aedes vexans, Psophora ferox, Coquillettidia perturbans, Anopheles quadrim

A geospatial study of the potential of two exotic species of mosquitoes to impact the epidemiology of West Nile virus in Maryland.

We used geospatial techniques to study the potential impact of 2 exotic mosquitoes, Aedes albopictus and Ochlerotatus japonicus japonicus, on the epidemiology of West Nile virus in Maryland. These 2 species have established populations in Maryland over the past 15 years. Larvae of both mosquito species are found in natural and artificial water-holding cavities and containers, particularly water in tires. Therefore, we used locations of licensed tire dealers and of tire dumps scheduled for clean up as an index for potential sources of mosquito vectors. This index was expected to underestimate t

Experimental transmission of St. Louis encephalitis virus by Ochlerotatus j. japonicus.

Ochlerotatus japonicus japonicus a newly discovered nonindigenous mosquito species in North America, and a colonized strain of Culex pipiens were compared for their vector competence for St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLE). Infection rates in Oc. j. japonicus were 0-33% after feeding on chickens with viremias between 10(4.1) and 10(4.7) plaque-forming units (PFU)/ml of blood. In comparison, infection rates were 12-94% for Cx. pipiens that fed on the same chickens. When fed on chickens with viremias between 10(5.3) and 10(5.6) PFU/ml of blood, infection rates for Oc. j. japonicus and Cx. pipiens

Sensitivity of the VecTest antigen assay for eastern equine encephalitis and western equine encephalitis viruses.

VecTest assays for detecting eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEE) and western equine encephalitis virus (WEE) antigen in mosquito pools were evaluated to determine their sensitivity and specificity by using a range of EEE, WEE, St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLE), and West Nile virus (WN) dilutions as well as individual and pooled mosquitoes containing EEE or WEE. The EEE test produced reliable positive results with samples containing > or = 5.3 log10 plaque-forming units (PFU) of EEE/ml, and the WEE test produced reliable positive results with samples containing > or = 4.7 log10 PFU WEE/ml.

Landing sites on the human body preferred by Aedes albopictus.

The landing sites on the human body preferred by Aedes albopictus were examined. Five male volunteers wearing only shorts stood in a mosquito net enclosure containing 120 proboscis-amputated Ae. albopitus. In separate tests, 9 male volunteers and 1 female volunteer lay supine during the test. The number of mosquitoes landing on each site of the volunteer's body was counted, and after completion of the test, his or her body temperature was recorded. When the subject was upright, the landing site most preferred by mosquitoes was the foot. When volunteers were supine, the foot also was the most p

Field evaluation of three plant-based insect repellents against malaria vectors in Vaca Diez Province, the Bolivian Amazon.

The efficacy of repellents against Anopheles darlingi, the main malaria vector in Bolivia, was evaluated. This mosquito has a peak in biting activity early in the evening. Three natural repellents (1 eucalyptus based, 1 neem based, and 1 containing several repellent essential oils) were tested in comparison with 15% deet in human landing catches in Bolivia. The eucalyptus-based repellent containing 30% p-menthane-diol applied at a dose similar to those used in practice gave 96.89% protection for 4 h. Deet gave 84.81% protection. The other 2 products did not provide significant protection from

Detection of St. Louis encephalitis and western equine encephalomyelitis RNA in mosquitoes tested without maintenance of a cold chain.

Western equine encephalomyelitis and St. Louis encephalitis viral RNA can be detected 20 days after death of infected Culex tarsalis in the absence of a cold chain. Viral RNA was detected with the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction in mosquitoes infected either parenterally or perorally in the laboratory and then killed and held for up to 20 days at 27 degrees C. Cell culture assay and in situ enzyme immunoassay did not detect infectious virus in the same mosquitoes.

Use of a funnel trap for collecting immature Aedes aegypti and copepods from deep wells in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

During the course of a "dry" season dengue vector survey, indoor and outdoor household wells were sampled for the possible presence of immature mosquitoes and copepods. With a simple floating funnel trap, Aedes aegypti immature stages were captured in over 33% of the sampled wells (n = 93) during a 24-h trapping period per well. Average number of larvae (all instars) per positive well was 8.8 (range 1-63). Positive wells varied in depth from 2.7 to 14.7 m (8.8-48.2 ft), with a mean of 7.9 +/-SE 0.5 m in well rim to water surface. Only 4 wells (4.3%) contained Culex quinquefasciatus larvae. Onl

Reduction in susceptibility to Brugia malayi of F2 progeny of Aedes togoi treated with ethyl methanesulfonate.

The susceptibility to Brugia malayi infection was tested in F2 female progeny derived from male and female Aedes togoi treated with ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS). Three-day-old males and females were treated with 0.025, 0.050, and 0.075, 0.10, 0.15, or 0.20% EMS by allowing them to feed for 5 days on sugar cubes containing EMS and then mated at random. Percentage of susceptibility and mean number of infective larvae (L3) in F2 females were analyzed over a 2-wk period. Reductions in susceptibility were significant in the F2 populations arising from the 3 highest EMS concentrations. F2 infections

The use of microsatellites to study gene flow in natural populations of Anopheles malaria vectors in Africa: potential and pitfalls.

The potential of microsatellites as population genetic markers in the malarial vectors Anopheles gambiae and Anopheles arabiensis was assessed using 4 loci. Substantial genetic divergence was found not only between these species but also between the Mopti and Forest chromosomal forms of An. gambiae, demonstrating that microsatellites do have the power to detect barriers to gene flow in these mosquitoes. However, application and interpretation of microsatellites was not necessarily straightforward. Despite the use of semiautomated fluorescent technology that enabled fragment sizes to be determi

Introduction and establishment of Aedes (Stegomyia) albopictus skuse (Diptera: Culicidae) in Albania.

In August-October 1979, infestations of the mosquito Aedes albopictus were discovered at a number of widely separated sites in Albania. Used tires were the principal larval habitat. The species was probably introduced from China in the mid-1970s. The initial infestation was probably at a rubber factory adjacent to the port of Durrës (Durazzo), from where the mosquito was shipped in tires to recapping plants in other parts of the country. This is the first recorded infestation of Ae. albopictus outside Oriental and Australasian regions.
