Prediction of ankle kinematics and kinetics in stair ascent motion using surface EMG feature inputs of lower extremity muscle combinations.

Recent studies show the relevance of using sEMG signals and extracted features in powered prosthesis control. However, amputation technique … e combinations based on prediction success for ankle kinematics and kinetics during stair ascending motion. We used eight muscle inputs in a long short-term memory (LSTM): rectus femoris (RF), vastus medialis (VM), tibialis anterior (TA), peroneus longus (PL), gluteus maximus (Gmax), biceps femoris (BF), medial gastrocnemius (MG), and soleus (SOL). sEMG …

Agreement and Repeatability of a Smartphone-Based Markerless System (OpenCap) Versus Marker-Based Motion Capture During Treadmill Walking and Running.

Marker-based motion capture is the gold standard for 3-dimensional gait analysis but is expensive and largely confined to specialized laboratories. Smartphone-based markerless tools such as OpenCap could scale gait assessment, yet their validity and repeatability during treadmill walking and running remain unclear. We evaluated agreement and within-session repeatability between OpenCap and motion capture during treadmill walking (4 km·h-1) and running (8 and 14 km·h-1) in 10 healthy adults, recorded simultaneously with both systems. We computed spatiotemporal variables, sagittal hip/knee/ankle…

Exploring the Action-Perception Loop in Children Born Very Preterm: Associations Between Biological Motion Perception, Motor Coordination, and Behavioral Outcomes.

PURPOSE: Children born very preterm (VPT < 32 weeks' gestation) are at elevated risk for neurodevelopmental difficulties, including social functioning, motor coordination, and perceptual processing, domains that also show overlap with autism-related profiles. Biological motion (BM) perception, which supports the extraction of social information from movement, may represent one important pathway through which early motor and perceptual functioning relate to later socio-emotional development. METHODS: We examined BM perception, motor coordination, and behavioral outcome in 64 VPT and 31 full-te…

Development of a universal imaging "phenome" using shape, appearance and motion (SAM) features and the SAM Phenotype Observation Tool (SPOT).

Cells are plastic, highly heterogeneous and change over time. High-content timelapse imaging promises to reveal dynamic cell behaviors, enabling more accurate identification of cell state and cell fate prediction for biological hypothesis generation and perturbation screens. To empower live-cell imaging based screening, we report the development of (1) a Shape, Appearance, Motion (SAM) "phenome"; a universal set of 2185 image-derived features that act as a image-"transcriptome" to comprehensively quantify an object's instantaneous phenotype; (2) the SAM-Phenotype-Observation-Tool (SPOT), for i…

Improving workflow efficiency during prostate stereotactic body radiotherapy using real-time adaptive planning associated with reduced intra-fractional target motion.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging-linear accelerator-based real-time adaptive planning for delivering ultra-hypofractionated stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) has advanced clinical accuracy yet added complexity to the radiotherapy workflow. We retrospectively evaluated whether the addition of a Parallel Automated Contouring module with Enhancement of AI (PACE-AI) reduced contouring time and overall SBRT duration, and its impact on intra-fractional target motion. METHODS: This study included 250 fractions from 90 prostate cancer patients from which fraction time were tracked. All…

Can seat suspensions mitigate motion sickness and enhance vibration comfort while being driven? A subjective assessment of the K-Seat.

Prolonged exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV) is a key contributor to motion discomfort in vehicles, including motion sickness and ride comfort. This issue becomes more compelling in automated vehicles, where occupants are expected to frequently engage in non-driving-related activities and will expect high comfort levels. Hence, enhancing seat design to mitigate WBV is essential for improving ride comfort across vehicle types. Therefore, this study, which primarily addresses vertical accelerations, optimized an existing seat suspension (K-Seat) and subjectively assessed discomfort using 24 …

A vestibular conflict perspective on kinetosis risk during different motion patterns in real car driving experiments with obstructed outward view.

In the context of research on kinetosis in autonomously driving cars, the impact on kinetosis development of different vehicle-specific parameters is frequently examined. However, the physiological perspective of vestibular motion cue processing is often not addressed. The study examines how stop and go and lane change maneuvers with obstructed outward and stationary interior view are associated with kinetosis risk during realistic car driving maneuvers. The differences in kinetosis development with respect to seating direction forward or backward as well as low and high magnitude of pitch, ro…

Comparative analysis of taping methods for chronic ankle instability: Impacts on ankle stability, range of motion, cost, and application time.

BACKGROUND: Despite the common use of ankle taping as a conservative treatment for chronic ankle instability (CAI), its effects on mechanical instability remain unquantified. This study aimed to use a capacitance-type strain sensor to quantitatively evaluate changes in mechanical instability resulting from several taping methods. METHODS: This crossover study analyzed 30 ankles of individuals with CAI under three taping conditions: athletic taping (AT), ankle kinesio taping (aKT), and lower leg-to-ankle kinesio taping (lKT). The anterior drawer distance (ADD) and ankle range of motion (ROM) w…

Increased Brownian Motion of Water Molecules in Livers With Advanced Fibrosis: Preclinical and Clinical Observations With Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

Despite the increased water content in fibrotic livers, numerous studies reported a decrease in apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) in liver fibrosis. We argue that the ADC decrease in fibrotic livers is due to the "T2 shine-through" of ADC, as the longer T2 in liver fibrosis leads to less signal decay between the low and high b-value images. The metric slow diffusion coefficient (SDC), predominantly measuring Brownian motion of water molecules, was proposed to mitigate the difficulties associated with this "T2 shine-through" of ADC. This study calculated ADC and SDC of 1 rat study with liver…

Assessment of Cerebral Perfusion Asymmetry in Chronic Migraine Patients Using Intravoxel Incoherent Motion (IVIM)-Derived Pseudodiffusion Coefficient and Perfusion Fraction.

Chronic migraine (CM) is associated with neurobiological alterations beyond episodic attacks, yet cerebral microvascular perfusion changes during the interictal phase of CM remain underexplored. Intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides diffusion-derived pseudoperfusion parameters that reflect regional microvascular alterations in the brain parenchyma. Accordingly, this study aimed to investigate right-to-left hemispheric asymmetry of IVIM-derived perfusion parameters in migraine-implicated cortical and subcortical regions during the interictal phase of CM. …
