INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: There are many entities that cause equilibrium disorders. Whiplash syndrome is becoming an important entity as a trigger of equilibrium disorders because of an increase in traffic accidents. There are many hypotheses on the generation of vertigo and dizziness in whiplash syndrome. The objective of this study is to describe and analyze the clinical symptoms of patients who suffered whiplash.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Thirty six patients with equilibrium disorders who suffered whiplash syndrome were studied prospectively. None of these subjects had cranial trauma or a his

BACKGROUND: Myoclonus-dystonia is a movement disorder often associated with mutations in the maternally imprinted epsilon-sarcoglycan (SGCE) gene located on chromosome 7q21. Silver-Russell syndrome is a heterogeneous disorder characterized by prenatal and postnatal growth restriction and a characteristic facies, caused in some cases by maternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 7.
OBJECTIVES: To describe and investigate the combination of a typical myoclonus-dystonia syndrome and Silver-Russell syndrome.
DESIGN: Clinical and neurophysiological examination as well as cytogenetic and molecular

Writer's cramp is a highly specific movement disorder in which handwriting is impaired while most other manual skills are often unaffected. On the basis of abnormal findings in experiments measuring the control of grip forces, it has been suggested that writer's cramp is caused by a deficit of sensorimotor integration. The aim of our study was to determine whether there is a functional link between sensory deficits, abnormalities in the control of grip force, and handwriting disorders. We compared the grip force and handwriting performance of writer's cramp patients with that of control subjec

Hemifacial spasm (HFS) is a peripherally induced movement disorder characterized by involuntary, unilateral, intermittent, irregular, tonic or clonic contractions of muscles innervated by the ipsilateral facial nerve. We reviewed the clinical features and response to different treatments in 158 patients (61% women) with HFS evaluated at our Movement Disorders Clinic. The mean age at onset was 48.5+/-14.1 years (range: 15-87) and the mean duration of symptoms was 11.4+/-8.5 (range: 0.5-53) years. The left side was affected in 56% instances; 5 patients had bilateral HFS. The lower lid was the mo…

Ambulatory deep brain stimulation (DBS) became possible in the late 1980s and was initially used to treat people with movement disorders. Trials of DBS in people with treatment-resistant psychiatric disorder began in the late 1990s, initially focusing on obsessive-compulsive disorder, major depressive disorder and Tourette syndrome. Despite methodological issues, including small participant numbers and lack of consensus over brain targets, DBS is now being trialled in a wide range of psychiatric conditions. There has also been more modest increase in ablative procedures. This paper reviews the…

CONTEXT: Sleep disorders affect responsiveness to sensory information and can cause nocturnal polyuria and reduced sleep depth; hence, these are potentially influential in understanding the mechanism of nocturia.
OBJECTIVE: To report the systematic review (SR) and expert consensus for primary care management of nocturia in sleep disorders.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: Four databases were searched from January to April 2020. A total of 1658 titles and abstracts were screened, and 23 studies potentially applicable were included for full-text screening. The nominal group technique (NGT) was used to de

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article was to review the literature about temporomandibular disorders and bruxism and their relationships in children and adolescents.
METHODS: The literature was searched using Medline, ISI, Cochrane Library, Scielo and the Internet, from March 1970 to the end of June 2007. The inclusion criteria were: they evaluated a possible association between TMD and bruxism, and they dealt with child and/or adolescent samples. Furthermore, interim reports, related Internet sites and chapters in textbooks were considered. From 64 records found, 30 fulfilled the inclusion crit

Developmental dyslexia is a complex reading disorder involving genetic and environmental factors. After more than a century of research, its etiology remains debated. Two hypotheses are often put forward by scholars to account for the causes of dyslexia. The most common one, the linguistic hypothesis, postulates that dyslexia is due to poor phonological awareness. The alternative hypothesis considers that dyslexia is caused by visual-attentional deficits and abnormal eye movement patterns. This article reviews a series of selected event-related brain potential (ERP) and eye movement studies on

BACKGROUND: Ranitidine has not been considered as a potential cause of ocular movement conditions. However, it is known that the vestibular nucleus complex, that has a key role in gaze control and vestibule-ocular reflexes, receives hypothalamic histaminergic innervations. Some studies reported the effect of ranitidine blocking the excitatory responses of vestibular nuclei neurons to histamine.
CASE REPORT: We report the first case of a downbeat nystagmus secondary to ranitidine in an infant. A 3-month-old female developed a downbeat gaze after starting treatment with ranitidine for a pediatr

Ocular motor disorders are a well recognized feature of multiple sclerosis (MS). Clinical abnormalities of eye movements, early in the disease course, are associated with generalized disability, probably because the burden of disease in affected patients falls on the brainstem and cerebellar pathways, which are important for gait and balance. Measurement of eye movements, especially when used to detect internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO), may aid diagnosis of MS. Measurement of the ocular following response to moving sinusoidal gratings of specified spatial frequency and contrast can be used as

Hemifacial spasm (HFS) is a movement disorder characterised by involuntary paroxysmal facial movements that usually involve the orbicularis oculi and then spread to the other facial muscles. A microvascular compression and demyelination of the seventh nerve at its exit from the brain stem is considered to be the main aetiology of HFS. In addition to rare idiopathic (cryptogenetic) cases, others causes of HFS exist: tumours or vascular malformations have been described, of both the ipsilateral and contralateral cerebellopontine angle (CPA). However, space-occupying lesions in locations other th

We developed an akathisia rating scale for use with persons who have mental retardation and screened for the occurrence of akathisia in three samples: 66 adults receiving maintenance neuroleptic treatment, 20 adults not receiving neuroleptics, and 8 adults undergoing neuroleptic dose reduction. The scale had an acceptable level of interrater reliability and validly measured group differences related to neuroleptic treatment status. Using an empirically derived cut-off-score, we estimated the prevalence rate for akathisia to be 5% in neuroleptic-free subjects, 17% in neuroleptic-maintenance sub

A girl aged 9 years with Rasmussen's encephalitis previously treated by left temporal lobectomy suddenly developed prolonged attacks of extremely rapid respirations associated with poverty of body movements and greatly reduced facial movements with loss of speech. Her comprehension appeared intact and she responded to certain requests. Her eye gaze behaviour suggested a high degree of vigilance. The attacks would last from minutes to hours and were repeated up to a dozen times daily. In the context of the stress generated by the illness and other family problems the attacks had been mistaken f

Mutations in the adenylate cyclase 5 (ADCY5) gene recently have been identified as the cause of a childhood-onset disorder characterized by persistent or paroxysmal choreic, myoclonic, and/or dystonic movements. The 2 novel mutations we identified expand the clinical spectrum of ADCY5 mutations to include alternating hemiplegia of childhood.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity could reduce the risk of depression and anxiety. A 24-h day includes time spent sleeping, in sedentary behavior (SB), or engaging in physical activities. However, the joint and combined associations of these 24-h movement behaviors with depressive and anxiety symptoms remain unclear.
AIM: To investigate the compositional associations of 24-h movement behaviors with depressive and anxiety symptoms in a population-based sample of middle-aged adults.
METHODS: The study population (N = 4490) comprised of participants from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 (NFBC
