Cognitive vulnerability to depression: an exploration of dysfunctional attitudes and ruminative response styles in the United Arab Emirates.

BACKGROUND: There has been little exploration of Beck's cognitive theory of depression and Nolen-Hoeksem's response styles theory within Arab populations. OBJECTIVES: The study investigates the generalizability of these clinically influential models to Emirati citizens residing within United Arab Emirates (UAE). METHOD: An opportunity sample of 450 undergraduate participants was assessed for dysfunctional attitudes using an Arabic/English 40-item version of Weissman and Beck's Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale (DAS). Participants also completed Arabic/English versions of Nolen-Hoeksema's ruminat

The HADS and the DT for screening psychosocial distress of cancer patients in Taiwan.

PURPOSE: This study assesses the sensitivity and specificity of Mandarin versions of two psychosocial screening tools for adjustment, anxiety and depressive disorders: the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and the Distress Thermometer (DT). METHODS: The two scales were used to screen 103 consecutive cancer patients seen for psychiatric evaluation at KF-SYSCC between May and November 2004 prior to their psychiatric interviews. Each scale was tested against clinical psychiatric diagnoses based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition for their sensit

Association between oral malodour and psychological characteristics in subjects with neurotic tendencies complaining of halitosis.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the psychosomatically subjective symptoms of subjects with neurotic tendencies complaining of halitosis. DESIGN: Breath malodour was measured in 368 patients using organoleptic test and gas chromatography. Neurotic tendency and subjective symptoms were assessed using the Cornell Medical Index (CMI). RESULTS: Of the 79 subjects who met the criteria for neurotic tendencies according to CMI scores, 58 (73.4%) had oral malodour, whereas 21 (26.6%) did not. Coated tongue, periodontal pocket, and daily drinking were significantly more common in subjects with oral malodour. On

Attributional intervention for depression in two people with multiple sclerosis (MS): single case design.

BACKGROUND: Depression is common in those with MS. The hopelessness theory of depression, emphasizing the role of attributional style, is supported in this population. Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) that can affect attributional style can reduce depression in people who have MS. AIMS: The present study aimed to consider whether changing attributional style would reduce depression in two people with MS, thereby supporting the importance of this component of CBT with this population. METHOD: Two female participants with MS were offered a 5-session intervention designed to alter attributiona

Attentional bias in complicated grief.

BACKGROUND: Complicated Grief (CG) is a debilitating potential consequence of bereavement. Despite the significant health costs associated with CG, relatively little is known about the cognitive processes associated with the condition. This study investigated information processing in CG. METHOD: Twenty four individuals with CG and 25 bereaved individuals without CG completed a modified emotional Stroop task in which they were presented with death-related and neutral cue words. Half of the participants were also given instructions to suppress thoughts of their loved one's death while completi

Alterations of niacin skin sensitivity in recurrent unipolar depressive disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Skin flushing after niacin (methylnicotinate, vitamin B(3)) stimulation is a biological marker of availability of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). Decreased PUFA levels have been reported in depressive disorder, while add-on supplementation of omega-3 PUFA has been suggested to improve depressive symptoms. This study aimed to clarify whether a disturbance of niacin skin flushing occurs also in depression, and to identify patient characteristics for those who might benefit from PUFA supplementation. METHOD: We studied 30 patients with recurrent unipolar depressive disorder dur

An open trial of a comprehensive anger treatment program on an outpatient sample.

BACKGROUND: This pilot study was designed to investigate the efficacy of a cognitive behavioral treatment for anger. METHOD: Twelve (5 men and 7 women) outpatient adults completed 2-hour group sessions for 16 sessions. Participants were diagnosed with 29 Axis I and 34 Axis II disorders with high rates of comorbidity. Empirically supported techniques of skills training, cognitive restructuring, and relaxation were utilized. In this protocol, cognitive restructuring emphasized the use of the ABC model to understand anger episodes and the Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) techniques of di

The moderating effects of gender on the associations between multidimensional hostility and psychosomatic symptoms: a Chinese case.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of gender on the relationship between multidimensional hostility and psychosomatic symptoms in Chinese culture. The participants in this study were 398 Chinese college students (40% female) recruited from Taiwan. Four dimensions of multidimensional hostility-hostility cognition, hostility affect, expressive hostility behavior, and suppressive hostility behavior-were measured by the Chinese Hostility Inventory. After controlling for the effects of depression and anxiety, the results of path analysis revealed that the multidimensional hostilit

Video-based coping skills to reduce health risk and improve psychological and physical well-being in Alzheimer's disease family caregivers.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether video-based coping skills (VCS) training with telephone coaching reduces psychosocial and biological markers of distress in primary caregivers of a relative with Alzheimer's disease or related dementia (ADRD). METHODS: A controlled clinical trial was conducted with 116 ADRD caregivers who were assigned, alternately as they qualified for the study, to a Wait List control condition or the VCS training arm in which they viewed two modules/week of a version of the Williams LifeSkills Video adapted for ADRD family care contexts, did the exercises and homework for ea

Evidence of reduced complexity in self-report data from patients with medically unexplained symptoms.

Physical symptoms which cannot be adequately explained by organic disease are a common problem in all fields of medicine. Reduced complexity, shown using nonlinear dynamic analysis, has been found to be associated with a wide range of illnesses. These methods have been applied to short time series of mood but not to self-rated physical symptoms. We tested the hypothesis that self-reported medically unexplained physical symptoms display reduced complexity by measuring the approximate entropy of self-reported emotions and physical symptoms collected twice daily over 12 weeks and comparing the re

[Apathy in Parkinson's disease. Impairment in quality of life].

Apathy is one of the most prominent non-motor symptoms in Parkinson Disease (PD). Its range of prevalence in PD has been estimated in 20 to 45%. The objective of this work is to assess the prevalence of apathy in PD patients, and its relation with depression and executive function impairment. Fifty seven PD patients (54% women), mean age of 68.7 years, and a disease duration of 7.5 years from diagnosis were included. We used the following scales: UPDRS, Hoehn & Yahr, Mini Mental State Examination, the 14-item Apathy Scale (AS), the Beck Depression Inventory, and Trail Making Test versions A an

Affective lability and impulsivity in a clinical sample of women with bulimia nervosa: the role of affect in severely dysregulated behavior.

OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of this study was to examine the role of affective lability in maladaptive behaviors in a sample of women who meet DSM criteria for current bulimia nervosa (BN). METHOD: Participants were administered a semistructured diagnostic interview (SCID-P) and only those who currently met criteria for BN (N = 134) were included in the analyses. All other data were collected through the use of self-report questionnaires. RESULTS: Affective lability significantly predicted the Impulsive Behavior Scale score (sr = 0.21, t = 2.64, p < .009, f(2) = 0.06) and excessive reassuranc

Reduction of shape and weight concern in young adolescents: a 30-month controlled evaluation of a media literacy program.

OBJECTIVE: Recent eating disorder prevention efforts have targeted high-risk females in late adolescence (>15 years). Methodologically rigorous evaluations of prevention programs directed to younger, mixed-sex, universal audiences are largely absent. The primary objective was to evaluate a theoretically informed media literacy program delivered to a mixed-sex, universal, young adolescent audience. METHOD: Five hundred forty Grade 8 students (mean age 13.62 years, SD 0.37 years) from 4 schools participated with a total of 11 classes receiving the 8-lesson media literacy program (126 girls and

Depressive characteristics of adult psychiatric inpatients with a history of multiple versus one or no suicide attempts.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of research suggests that individuals with a history of multiple suicide attempts exhibit more severe psychopathology than individuals with only one or no previous suicide attempts. Given the strong link between diagnoses of major depression and suicide risk, our primary goal was to determine which specific depressive characteristics differentiate multiple attempters from patients with one or no previous attempts. METHODS: Participants were 121 depressed adult psychiatric inpatients. Participants were administered diagnostic interviews to assess the course and chara

Affective temperaments in heroin addiction.

BACKGROUND: Much of the literature has described personality disorder constructs for heroin addicts. Building on previous work we examine the relevance of affective temperament measures in these patients. METHODS: 59 consecutive stabilized methadone treated heroin addicts, 34 with and 25 without psychiatric comorbidity, were compared, regarding affective temperaments, according to the Akiskal and Mallya formulation, with 58 healthy volunteers sharing similar social and regional demographics. RESULTS: No differences were observed between heroin addicts and controls on either depressive or hyp

Assessing sleep during pregnancy: a study across two time points examining the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and associations with depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Sleep quality seems to be an antecedent to depressive symptoms during pregnancy. We sought to 1) examine the psychometrics of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) in pregnancy; 2) examine whether sleep quality predicted increases in depressive symptoms; and 3) compare PSQI scores across 3 or 2 levels of depressive symptoms. METHODS: Each of the 252 participants completed the Beck Depression Inventory (short form) and a sleep quality measure at mid and late pregnancy. RESULTS: PSQI total scores showed good internal consistency and construct validity. An improved m

Psychiatric and psychological outcomes of Japanese living donors following liver transplantation.

This study indexed the mental status in six living donor liver transplantations (LDLT) performed at the Juntendo University Hospital between 2005 and 2007. The donors' preoperative and postoperative psychiatric and psychological status was assessed using the Profile of Mood States (POMS) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). The present study found that the donors' POMS anger/hostile score decreased significantly following transplantation. In addition, the STAI score suggested that donors had little anxiety or depression following the operation. Although the present study was limited d

Does two-year stability for scale scores of psychosocial factors differ by socioeconomic position?

Previous longitudinal studies have demonstrated the importance of measuring stability of risk factors over time to correct for attenuation bias. The present aim was to assess the stability of scores for eight psychometric scales over a 2-yr. period and whether stability differed by socioeconomic position. Baseline data were collected during 2003-2004 from 1,007 men and women ages 45 to 69 years. Follow-up data were collected in 2006 from a total of 795 men and women. Analysis showed that stability over 2 yr. was moderate and tended to be lower in groups of low socioeconomic position. It is sug

Differences in clinical presentation between depressed outpatients wanting versus not wanting treatment for comorbid social anxiety disorder.

Patients with comorbid major depressive disorder (MDD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD) demonstrate greater severity of symptoms and functional impairment compared with patients with either disorder alone. However, no known studies have examined what differentiates patients who do and do not want treatment for comorbid SAD in addition to MDD. The aim of the current study was to examine clinical characteristics (e.g., variables related to depression and social anxiety severity) of patients who did versus did not desire treatment for comorbid SAD. Results showed that patients who desired treatm
