Hypnosis Intervention for Sleep Disturbances in Individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Randomized Pilot Study.

Poor sleep quality is highly prevalent among individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Further, poor sleep quality is associated with reduced quality of life, increased stress response, memory impairments, and progression to dementia among individuals with MCI. Pharmacological treatments for sleep have mixed efficacy and can lead to dependency. Therefore, alternatives to pharmacological treatments for improving sleep among individuals with MCI are needed. The present study reports on the feasibility of a non-pharmacological self-administered hypnosis intervention focused on sleep quali

Human Herpesvirus-6B Infection and Alterations of Gut Microbiome in Patients with Fibromyalgia: A Pilot Study.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain often accompanied by fatigue, sleep disturbances, memory issues, and mood disorders. The exact cause of FM remains unknown, and diagnosis is typically based on a history of persistent widespread pain, as there are no objective biomarkers usable in diagnosis of this disorder available. The aim of this study was to identify measurable indicators specific to FM with potential as biomarkers. This study included 17 individuals diagnosed with FM and 24 apparently healthy persons. Using real-time polymerase chain

Angiogenic potential in periodontal stem cells from upper and lower jaw: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Teeth and supporting oral tissues are attractive and accessible sources of stem cells. Periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSC) are readily isolated from extracted third molars, and exhibit the ability to self-renew and differentiate into multiple mesodermal cell fates. Clinical experience suggests that the exact location of periodontal defects affects the oral bone remodeling and wound healing. Compared to the mandible, the maxilla heals quicker and more efficiently. Angiogenesis is key in tissue regeneration including dental tissues, yet few studies focus on the angiogenic potenti

Paired transcriptional analysis of periodontitis and peri-implantitis within same host: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Peri-implantitis, a plaque-associated pathological condition, has been on the rise with the increasing prevalence of dental implants. Despite its similarities to periodontitis, peri‑implantitis is difficult to control completely and has high relapse rates. This has sparked interest in exploring the pathogenic differences between the two conditions. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 10 participants to concurrently examine periodontitis and peri‑implantitis within the same patients, thereby minimizing inter-individual variation. Gingival tissue samples were collected from

3D Melt Blowing of Elastollan Thermoplastic Polyurethane for Tissue Engineering Applications: A Pilot Study.

Scaffolds, in addition to being biocompatible, should possess structural and mechanical properties similar to the natural tissues they intend to replace. Many tissue engineering applications require porous 3D scaffolds characterized by unique microfibrous organization and mechanical anisotropy. Manufacturing process principles and process parameter-biomaterial interactions ultimately govern the properties that can be achieved in the scaffold. In this study, we investigate a recently developed nonwoven scaffold fabrication process, 3D melt blowing (3DMB), for processing Elastollan®, a thermopla

Thymic stromal lymphopoietin and digital microvascular damage in systemic sclerosis patients: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a complex autoimmune connective-tissue disease, characterised by vasculopathy and fibrosis of the skin and internal organs. Activation of microvascular endothelial cells (ECs) causes the intimal hyperplasia that characterises the vascular remodelling in SSc. The most frequent complication of SSc is the development of digital ulcers (DUs). Thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) may trigger fibrosis and sustain vascular damage. Aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between serum level of TSLP and DUs. METHODS: 75 consecutive SSc patients were enr

A Single-Center Pilot Study of Therapeutic Apheresis in Patients with Severe Post-COVID Syndrome.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, many patients have reported chronic fatigue and severe post-exertional malaise, with symptoms similar to those of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). The accumulation of agonistic receptor autoantibodies targeting beta-adrenergic (β1 and β2) and muscarinic (M3 and M4) neurotransmitter receptors may play a crucial role in the pathomechanism of both ME/CFS and post-COVID conditions. Therapeutic apheresis has been suggested as an effective treatment option for alleviating and mitigating symptoms in this desperate group of patients. In this sin

Ultrasound Shear Wave Elastography of the Arch-Supporting Structures in Symptomatic Flatfoot: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: The posterior tibial tendon (PTT), deltoid ligament, and spring ligament are often torn or attenuated in patients with progressive collapsing foot deformity. The goal of this pilot study was to measure the ultrasound shear wave velocity (SWV) of these arch-supporting structures in feet with varying degrees of deformity to improve our understanding of their role in the progression of deformity. METHODS: Two observers measured the SWV of the supramalleolar and inframalleolar PTT in long and short axes, in the tibiospring portion of the deltoid ligament, and in the superomedial band

Multispectral optoacoustic tomography of benign parotid tumors in vivo: a prospective observational pilot study.

Parotid lumps are a heterogeneous group of mainly benign but also malignant tumors. Preoperative imaging does not allow a differentiation between tumor types. Multispectral optoacoustic tomography (MSOT) may improve the preoperative diagnostics. In this first prospective pilot trial the ability of MSOT to discriminate between the two most frequent benign parotid tumors, pleomorphic adenoma (PA) and Warthin tumor (WT) as well as to normal parotid tissue was explored. Six wavelengths (700, 730, 760, 800, 850, 900 nm) and the parameters deoxygenated (HbR), oxygenated (HbO2), total hemoglobin (HbT
