The effects of sodium cyanide on relaxation, increases in cyclic GMP accumulation and guanylate cyclase activation induced by sodium nitroprusside and other nitrovasodilators were examined in rat thoracic aorta. Cyanide abolished nitroprusside-induced relaxation and the associated increase in cyclic GMP levels. Basal levels of cyclic GMP and cyclic AMP were also depressed. Reversal of nitroprusside-induced relaxation by cyanide was independent of the tissue level of cyclic GMP prior to addition of cyanide. Albinism in mammals is accompanied by specific morphological and functional alterations of the visual system. To understand their cellular basis we studied the physiological characteristics and transmembrane currents of pyramidal neurons in 350-microm-thick slices of visual cortex from pigmented and albino rats using whole-cell and gramicidin perforated patch-clamp recordings. The aim of the present work was to study the effect of substance P (SP) and somatostatin (SST) on hepatic bile flow. For this purpose a total of 54 anesthetized mongrel dogs were used. The gallbladder was excluded by ligation of the cystic duct and a common duct fistula was created by insertion of a catheter into the common duct. Both SP and SST were found to exert an anticholeretic effect in the dog. SST was also found to be anticholeretic in man.
