The 2020 Coronavirus Pandemic as a Change-Event in Sport Performers' Careers: Conceptual and Applied Practice Considerations.

The Coronavirus experience (CE) presents a highly challenging period for sport performers (e.g., athletes, coaches, referees), with potential effects on their lives and career trajectories. In this article, we initially conceptualize the CE using the scheme of change for sport psychology practice (Samuel and Tenenbaum, 2011a). Within this framework, the CE is understood as a longitudinal, multifaceted, unpredicted, non-controlled change-event, with four distinct stages: (a) a pre-Coronavirus stage with unique career contextual conditions (i.e., stable engagement or a transitional period), (b)

Self-efficacy in bipolar disorder: Development and validation of a self-report scale.

BACKGROUND: Successful management of bipolar disorder (BPD) typically involves individuals undertaking a complex array of self-management tasks (e.g., taking medication, monitoring symptoms, following a regular sleep routine). Many people with BPD doubt they can successfully undertake these tasks. This low sense of self-efficacy may lead to the perpetuation of BPD symptoms, poor quality of life, and low adherence to treatment. Research on self-efficacy in BPD has been hampered by the lack of a short, reliable and valid self-report scale that is practical to use in clinical and research setting

Epidemiology, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes for psychosocial problems in patients and families affected by non-intellectually impairing craniofacial malformation conditions: a systematic review protocol of qualitative data.

BACKGROUND: Physical attractiveness or unattractiveness wields a tremendous impact on the social and psychological components of life. Many individuals with facial deformities are treated more negatively than normal individuals, which may affect their self-image, quality of life, self-esteem, interpersonal encounters, and ultimately, success in life. Malformations that do not create physiological problems and whose major health impact is to degrade physical attractiveness and engender psychosocial consequences are insufficiently understood and not considered functional problems by medical insu

Mindfulness on-the-go: Effects of a mindfulness meditation app on work stress and well-being.

We investigated whether a mindfulness meditation program delivered via a smartphone application could improve psychological well-being, reduce job strain, and reduce ambulatory blood pressure during the workday. Participants were 238 healthy employees from two large United Kingdom companies that were randomized to a mindfulness meditation practice app or a wait-list control condition. The app offered 45 prerecorded 10- to 20-min guided audio meditations. Participants were asked to complete one meditation per day. Psychosocial measures and blood pressure throughout one working day were measured

Management of Paediatric Ulcerative Colitis, Part 1: Ambulatory Care-An Evidence-based Guideline From European Crohn's and Colitis Organization and European Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition.

BACKGROUND: The contemporary management of ambulatory ulcerative colitis (UC) continues to be challenging with ∼20% of children needing a colectomy within childhood years. We thus aimed to standardize daily treatment of pediatric UC and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD)-unclassified through detailed recommendations and practice points. METHODS: These guidelines are a joint effort of the European Crohn's and Colitis Organization (ECCO) and the Paediatric IBD Porto group of European Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN). An adult learning perspective on disability and microfinance: The case of Katureebe.

BACKGROUND: Despite Uganda's progress in promoting affirmative action for persons with disabilities and its strategy of using microfinance to fight poverty, access to microfinance services by persons with disabilities is still problematic due to barriers, characterised by discrepancies between policies and practices. Regarding education, the affirmative action in favour of learners with disabilities has not translated into actual learning opportunities due to personal and environmental barriers. OBJECTIVES: The study on which this article is based investigated the non-formal and informal adul

New modalities of ultrasound-based intima-media thickness, arterial stiffness and non-coronary vascular calcifications detection to assess cardiovascular risk.

BACKGROUND: Traditional surgical prehabilitation emphasizes biomechanical conditioning. In a pain landscape shaped by opioid exposure, trauma histories, and psychosocial distress, this reductionist approach is insufficient. OBJECTIVE: To propose a multidimensional, whole-person framework for perioperative readiness that integrates neurobiological mechanisms with practical clinical and policy levers. FRAMEWORK: Five synergistic domains-biological, psychological, social, spiritual, and existential-address discrete readiness deficits linked to dopaminergic tone, central sensitization, stress re

Exploring the feasibility of Conjoint Analysis as a tool for prioritizing innovations for implementation.

BACKGROUND: In an era of scarce and competing priorities for implementation, choosing what to implement is a key decision point for many behavioural change projects. The values and attitudes of the professionals and managers involved inevitably impact the priority attached to decision options. Reliably capturing such values is challenging. METHODS: This paper presents an approach for capturing and incorporating professional values into the prioritization of healthcare innovations being considered for adoption. Conjoint Analysis (CA) was used in a single UK Primary Care Trust to measure the pr

Predicting outcomes of primary care patients with major depression: development of a depression prognosis index.

OBJECTIVE: Depression research and practice focus increasingly on diverse patient populations with varying probabilities of response to clinical care. Prognostic indices use preexisting patient characteristics to estimate the probability of subsequent negative clinical outcomes and are useful tools for improving the study and care of diverse populations. Few such measures, however, have been developed for mental health conditions. This study developed and validated a depression prognosis measure for primary care patients with major depression. METHODS: Consecutive patients in 108 primary care

Learning disorders with a special emphasis on reading disorders: a review of the past 10 years.

OBJECTIVE: To review the past 10 years of clinical and research reports on learning disorders. METHOD: The most common and best-researched type of learning disorder is reading disability, which is the focus of this review. A selective review of the literature from Psychological Abstracts and Index Medicus from 1985 to the present was conducted. This review focused on conceptual and methodological issues, current assessment practices, epidemiology, correlates of brain function, biological factors, predictors of reading achievement, core deficits, comorbidity reading development and instruction

Amplifying Youth Voices in Public Health: Assessing the Sustained Impact of PATCH Youth Engagement Programs on Adolescent Health, Well-Being and Leadership Development.

INTRODUCTION: For over 10 years, the Wisconsin-based Providers and Teens Communicating for Health (PATCH) Program has worked alongside youth ages 14-19 to enhance adolescent health programs, policies, and practices. This evaluation explores the lasting effects on those who participated in the PATCH program as an adolescent. METHODS: All former Wisconsin PATCH participants were invited to complete a retrospective pre-post survey that asked them to reflect on their attitudes, actions, and knowledge before and after participating in PATCH. The survey used 5-point Likert scales and open-ended que

Experience of diabetes self-care and well-being among adults with type 2 diabetes in South Ethiopia: a qualitative descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) poses an escalating challenge in resource-limited settings where daily self-care practices are often compromised. The everyday realities of individuals with T2DM in Sub-Saharan Africa remain insufficiently understood. This study explored self-care experiences among adults with T2DM in South Ethiopia, focusing on factors shaping their daily lives and well-being. METHOD: A qualitative descriptive design with reflexive thematic analysis was employed. In-depth interviews were conducted with 21 purposefully selected participants (12 patients, 9 providers

Misconceptions, prejudice and social distance towards people with alcohol use disorders in China.

PURPOSE: Research from Western societies indicates pervasive public stigma against people with alcohol use disorders (AUDs). However, there is a lack of knowledge about the interactions between different components of stigma and their contribution to discriminatory behaviour towards individuals with AUDs within the Chinese cultural context. The aim of the present study was therefore to investigate the relationships of (mis-)conceptions, stereotypes, emotional reactions, perceived public stigma and their contribution to the desire for social distance among the Chinese adults. METHODS: (Mis-)co

Procedural Learning Improves Cognition in Multiple Sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is considered a neurodegenerative disease and an inflammatory demyelinating neuropathology in young population. Procedural memory has been poorly investigated in MS. OBJECTIVE: We assessed whether the MS group was able to develop a motor-cognitive skill, using a procedural task (PLSC) developed in our laboratory, applying a manual and serial reaction time (RT) paradigm to semantic categorization. METHODS: We evaluated 26 MS patients and 26 socio-demographic matched control participants using the PLSC task. RESULTS: Using non-parametric statistical analyse

Exploring characteristics associated with first benzodiazepine prescription in patients with affective disorders and related diagnoses.

OBJECTIVE: In patients with affective disorders, benzodiazepines (BZDs) are frequently administered at the onset, sometimes inappropriately. We sought to identify clinical variables associated with first BZD prescription in a large sample of patients with affective disorders. METHODS: Four hundred sixty patients with mood or anxiety disorders attending different psychiatric services were assessed comparing those who received BZD as first treatment (BZD w/) and those who did not (BZD w/o). RESULTS: More than one third (35.7%) of the total sample had received BZDs as first prescription. In rel

The music that helps people sleep and the reasons they believe it works: A mixed methods analysis of online survey reports.

Sleep loss is a widespread problem with serious physical and economic consequences. Music can impact upon physical, psychological and emotional states, which may explain anecdotal reports of its success as an everyday sleep aid. However, there is a lack of systematic data on how widely it is used, why people opt for music as a sleep aid, or what music works; hence the underlying drivers to music-sleep effects remain unclear. We investigated music as a sleep aid within the general public via a mixed methods data online survey (n = 651) that scored musicality, sleep habits, and open text respons
