Mal de debarquement syndrome: new insights.

Mal de Debarquement Syndrome (MdDS) is an enigmatic neurotological disorder with high morbidity, psychosocial burden, and few treatment options. Fortunately, there has been recent growth in scientific interest in understanding the biological basis of and in treating MdDS. Recent studies using functional neuroimaging have shown increased glucose metabolism in the left entorhinal cortex (EC) and amygdala in the setting of decreased prefrontal and temporal cortex metabolism in subjects with persistent MdDS. The EC is a key player in processing and gating spatial information to be stored in the hi

Psychological aspects of juvenile fibromyalgia syndrome: a literature review.

Juvenile fibromyalgia syndrome (JFMS) is a non-inflammatory chronic pain condition that occurs mainly in girls aged 9-15 years. JFMS is characterized by constant widespread pain in different parts of the body, poor sleep quality, daytime sleepiness and an altered mood. Concomitant psychological and organic factors result in a diminished capacity to cope with pain. The quality of life of individuals with chronic pain and their caregivers is severely restricted and the occurrence of symptoms of anxiety and depression is common in this population. The aim of the present study was to perform a sys

Temporomandibular disorders and functional somatic syndromes: deliberations for the dentist.

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is an umbrella term for a collection of disorders affecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and associated tissues. TMD is not a rare pathology for the dentist. The most common presenting symptom is pain, which causes the patient seek immediate treatment. Management is dictated by the cause. The most 'famed' causes include trauma, inflammation, aging, parafunctional habits, infections, neoplasms, and stress; and these are always considered in the differential diagnosis of TMJ pain. There are some less 'famed' causes of TMD, which are characterized by increase

[Molecular mechanism and mental function of postnatal neurogenesis].

Postnatal neurogenesis has been observed in two brain regions: the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the lateral ventricle and the subgranular zone (SGZ) of the dentate gyrus in the hippocampus, among vertebrates including human. Accumulating evidence has indicated the molecular mechanisms commonly underlying embryonic and adult neurogenesis. Genetic factors essential for neural development, i.e., Pax6, Fabp7, Sox2, Wnt3, Notch1, etc., are also expressed in adult neurogenic regions. Adult neurogenesis, however, is distinct from embryonic neurogenesis in that the former is activity dependent; enviro

[Musculoskeletal disorders caused by repetitive trauma of the upper limbs: a paradigm of the development of occupational diseases and industrial medicine].

The work related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are a wide range of inflammatory and degenerative disease and disorders that result in pain and functional impairment. All available definitions for WMSDS are non consistent and require in each individual case and in each group study careful identification of symptoms, signs and findings. WMSDs, as a mutifactorial work related disease, are associated to physical and psychosocial factors at work and other individual, sociocultural factors. They are therefore good paradigm for the changing occupational risks and illness and for the new methods t

Family concerns and relationship problems in anxious pregnant women and their associations with postnatal functional disability in Pakistan.

OBJECTIVE: Expanding on existing research suggesting that strategies to reduce prenatal anxiety can decrease functional disability (e.g., difficulties in performing everyday activities and social participation), we examined if this effect varied by type of anxiety-producing problem (i.e., having family concerns and relationship problems versus other problems) reported during pregnancy. Further, we explored if perceived social support mediated this relationship. METHODS: We used longitudinal data on 310 anxious Pakistani women who received any psychosocial intervention sessions as part of a pr
