Spasticity is one of the common complications of stroke, causing serious adverse effects for patients. However, comprehensive descriptions of the PSS network mechanism are currently lacking. This paper expounds on the mechanisms underlying post-stroke spasticity from multiple perspectives, including central nervous system networks, neurotransmitter networks, pain networks, and myofascial networks, as well as the brain-gut axis and brain-muscle axis networks. It summarizes emerging treatment approaches in recent years, providing a reference for clinical treatment and rehabilitation.

Patients who have sustained a profound brain injury often bite their lips and tongue, damaging their oral tissues. Lip and tongue biting usually occurs in patients with atypical oral reflexes and can lead to severe trauma to soft tissues, resulting in pain, lacerations, swelling, bleeding, ulceration and difficulties providing oral care. Due to the prevalence of lip and tongue biting, healthcare professionals involved in their care must be aware of the presentation, prevention and management, and when and how to refer to dental services.

Mpox, previously referred to as monkeypox, was recently deemed a public health emergency in 2022. Our understanding of potential secondary cutaneous manifestations in the setting of this infection is still evolving. We report a rare case of a man who presented with erythematous, painful subcutaneous nodules on his extremities in the setting of recent mpox infection. Biopsy of a lesion from the lower legs revealed a lobular panniculitis with lupus panniculitis-like features on pathology. He was ultimately diagnosed with a unique case of reactive panniculitis secondary to mpox.

Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a well-known modality for the treatment of malignant brain tumors. SRS, however, can also be used to treat non-malignant functional disorders such as epilepsy, tremor, trigeminal neuralgia (TN), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and intractable pain among others. Given the limited prospective data guiding treatment of these benign disorders, this article serves as a consolidated discussion of the application of SRS for functional ailments, hopefully serving as a reference for those considering application of this technique in clinical practice.

Cystic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) refers to an indolent version of RCC composed predominantly of cysts, and it is associated with good prognosis. We showed the FDG PET/CT findings in a patient with multiple hypermetabolic bone metastases presenting with pain in the left shoulder and upper abdomen, who was later found to have cystic RCC. FDG PET/CT demonstrated hypermetabolic bone lesions and slight thickening of the renal cyst wall with light metabolism. This report indicates the risk of misdiagnosing cystic RCC as a renalcyst.

For fatigue/lack of endurance, standards of care are based on established evidence-based practice. Fatigue is a distressing, persistent, and subjective sense of tiredness or exhaustion that is not proportional to the activity and interferes with usual function. Lack of endurance refers to limited physical capability to sustain an exercise or activity for an extended period of time. From 80% to 100% of patients with cancer report experiencing fatigue. It can be isolated or occur within a symptom cluster with pain, depression, dyspnea, anorexia, and sleep disturbance.

Opium Poppy (Papaver somniferum L.) is considered as one of the earliest medicinal plants known to mankind. Derived from the Greek name "opos" meaning juice, referring to its psychotropic latex, the plant was known and extensively used since Antiquity during religious rituals and for Medical purposes, mainly as hypnotic and pain reliever agent. In Cretan folk medicine it was recommended along with other poppies until the early 20th century to induce children sedation, by the name: "Hypnos" meaning sleep.

Diabetic myonecrosis or muscle infarction (DMI), a clinicoradiological entity is an underdiagnosed complication of diabetes mellitus. It refers to spontaneous aseptic necrosis of skeletal muscles commonly of the lower limb without evidence of any large vessel disease. It presents as painful swollen limb without any external insult in patients with long-standing diabetes mellitus with other microvascular complications especially nephropathy. We present four instances of DMI in our patients who had end-stage renal disease with a varied course.

Balantidium coli human infection predominantly occurs in tropical and subtropical regions in the world. Human case is extremely rare in China. This report details a case of B. coli infection in a 68-year-old man in China, who presented with history of abdominal pain, tenesmus, diarrhea with blood and was diagnosed as B. coli-caused dysentery. Our case indicates possible occurrence of Balantidium coli-related disease in cooler climates. This case is presented not only because of its rarity but also for future references.

Umbilical metastases mainly arise from malignancies of the digestive and gynecological systems, but rarely from breast cancer. A 64-year-old woman with a history of breast cancer was referred to us for investigation of a painful lesion in the umbilicus. Immunohistochemical staining of a specimen obtained by biopsy from the nodule showed umbilical metastasis of breast cancer. After a work up, she was successfully treated with a combination of surgery and endocrine therapy. We report this case to reinforce that not all periumbilical tumoral deposits are consistent.

A 47-year-old man was referred to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon by his dentist because ofa painful ulcer with exposed bone at the lingual side of teeth 47 and 48. The lesion was diagnosed as lingual mandibular osteonecrosis. Characteristics of lingual mandibular osteonecrosis are exposed bone in the molar area and sequestration. The disorder can appear spontaneously or following damage to the mucous membrane. Treatment options are surgical smoothening of exposed bone, surgical removal of necrotic bone and awaiting spontaneous sequestration.

A 69-year-old woman with mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) of the tongue base came under our observation complaining of repeated episodes of haemoptysis. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the tongue base gives rise to a rather vague and aspecific symptomatology. Early symptoms include foreign body sensation in the oral cavity, undefined paraesthesia, and sialorrhoea. With the progression of disease, dysphagia, otalgia, and painful swallowing are usually referred. We report a case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the tongue base mimicking an ectopic thyroid.

Owner complaints that refer to the musculoskeletal system are common in older dogs and cats. When the veterinarian is presented with these types of complaints, the differential lists include chronic intervertebral disk disease, diskospondylitis, degenerative joint disease, spondylosis with nerve root compression, joint/ ligament instability, and/or cancer. The diagnosis and management of some of these conditions is presented in detail with the general goal in mind that the older dog or cat is provided the best quality of life possible through good mobility along with being pain free.

The authors report their experience in the surgical treatment of the sequelae of congenital hip dysplasia, more specifically, 125 arthroplasties performed in 116 patients, with specific reference to the technical difficulties encountered and the various surgical methods used. This review suggests that prosthetization yields a high percentage of good results (77%) and constant remission of pain. Nonetheless, joint function, particularly when motion was severely compromised before surgery, or when dislocation was very severe (Crowe grades III and IV), is not always restored.

Cases of treatment because of acutely occurring states of pain were analysed in a big-city dental outpatients department. The one-year examination covered about 4,000 cases of the total number of 40,000 consultations. As for the diagnoses considered in the examination, it concerned primarily dental caries, acute apical periodontitis and pulpitis. It was to find out if here is a relation between "toothache" and airhygienic influences. This was done with reference to an examination using the same method which was performed as early as in 1982/83. Apparently, there is no immediate correlation.

Three new cases of chronic vitamin A intoxication are reported and a review of the literature with special reference to chronic intoxication in adolescents and adults is presented. The most prominent features are intracranial hypertension, skin and hair deviations, pain in the musculoskeletal system, and fatigue. METHODS: Literature related to BVT from 2004 to 2024 was retrieved from the Web of Science core collection database.
