The Role of Polymeric Biomaterials in the Treatment of Articular Osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis is a high-prevalence joint disease characterized by the degradation of cartilage, subchondral bone thickening, and synovitis. Due to the inability of cartilage to self-repair, regenerative medicine strategies have become highly relevant in the management of osteoarthritis. Despite the great advances in medical and pharmaceutical sciences, current therapies stay unfulfilled, due to the inability of cartilage to repair itself. Additionally, the multifactorial etiology of the disease, including endogenous genetic dysfunctions and exogenous factors in many cases, also limits the for

Laparoscopic orchidopexy for the intra-abdominal testis.

The role of laparoscopy in the management of the impalpable testis has been largely as a diagnostic tool only. Its therapeutic application as a single or two-stage Fowler-Stephens procedure for the intra-abdominal testis is assessed and a management algorithm derived. A retrospective review was performed of 26 children with 33 intra-abdominal testes (IAT) who were operated upon between 1992 and 1997; 5 had a single-stage (6 testes) and 21 had a staged approach. All children had the operated testis located in an acceptable scrotal position on review. Six operations were performed as a single-st

Prevalence and Associated Risk Factors of Self-Harm Among Health Care Workers: Protocol for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Self-harm is a major public health concern, with prevalence increasing worldwide, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic and associated lockdown restrictions. Health care workers (HCWs) face various challenges, such as pressures of social and familial responsibilities, a lack of integration within the profession, heavier workload, bullying at the workplace, and limited support in the workplace, that impact their mental health and often lead to self-harm. OBJECTIVE: We aim to synthesize the evidence on the pooled prevalence of self-harm worldwide and identify risk factors for sel

Modified Mitchell Osteotomy for Juvenile Hallux Valgus: A Case Report.

Juvenile hallux valgus is typically managed conservatively; however, surgery is indicated in symptomatic cases refractory to non-operative treatment. Herein, we report the case of a 17-year-old girl with juvenile hallux valgus who did not respond to orthotic management. After confirming physeal closure, a modified Mitchell osteotomy was performed. Postoperatively, the hallux valgus angle improved from 38° to 18°. Self-administered foot evaluation questionnaire scores revealed marked improvement, and the correction was maintained without major complications at 12 months postoperatively. The mod

A vanishing complication of haemodialysis: Dialysis disequilibrium syndrome.

Dialysis disequilibrium syndrome (DDS) is a rare syndrome characterised by neurological symptoms related to cerebral oedema. New patients who are started on haemodialysis are at the greatest risk for developing dialysis disequilibrium syndrome. Classical DDS develops during or immediately after haemodialysis. It is a generally self-limiting condition and settles with supportive management. Our case report describes DDS in a patient on chronic haemodialysis. She developed a tonic-clonic seizure shortly after completing 4 h of haemodialysis. This occurred in the context of having missed one sess

Urological care of the spinal cord-injured patient.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a catastrophic occurrence affecting the lives of 11,000 people in the United States every year. Urologic complications account for much of the morbidity associated with SCI and as much as 15% of the associated mortality. Spinal cord-injured patients are required to digest a plethora of self-management information during the emotionally and psychologically distressing period immediately following their injury. As a vital resource in the SCI patients' recovery process, it is crucial for the WOC nurse to have knowledge of the specialized needs of this population. This …

Acute interstitial nephritis secondary to infectious mononucleosis.

Renal involvement in infectious mononucleosis (IM) is infrequent. In most cases it is self-limited and is rarely associated with loss of renal function. The purpose of this case report is to document a case of acute interstitial nephritis (AIN) leading to acute renal failure (ARF) in a patient with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and to review literature of EBV infection and its renal manifestation. The patient was managed with hemodialysis and steroids and made an uneventful recovery. Renal involvement in IM may be more common than generally appreciated and may occasionally lead to ARF. Th

Management of trichotillomania.

Hallopeau, a French dermatologist, coined the term trichotillomania (TM) to describe alopecia (baldness) caused by self-traction of the hair, but the term now encompasses the entire syndrome of pathological hair-pulling. It is a disorder of impulse control. The authors present three (adult and child) cases of TM managed successfully using a combination of pharmacotherapy and a package of behaviour therapy. Some psychopathological aspects of the disorder are also discussed.

Dopamine Dysregulation Syndrome in Parkinson's Disease.

This case study examines how patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) may develop dopamine dysregulation syndrome (DDS), a condition characterized by the misuse of dopamine replacement therapy through excessive self-directed dosing beyond what is necessary to control motor symptoms. While carbidopa/levodopa remains the mainstay therapy for many adults with PD, some patients may choose Mucuna pruriens, a complementary medicine containing levodopa, to manage their motor symptoms. This case describes a patient with PD who presents with DDS following co-administration of self-directed Mucuna prurien

Response of tertiary addictions services to opioid dependence during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has presented the addiction services with an unprecedented set of challenges. Opioid users are particularly vulnerable because of their high level of pre-existing health problems and lifestyle factors. In order to minimise their risks to self and to others in the current Covid-19 crisis, addiction services sought to urgently identify vulnerable individuals, and induct them into opioid substitution treatment (OST) promptly. Additionally, several guidelines were created and regularly updated by the health and safety executive (HSE) for any healthcare staff

Self-Strangulation Through A Sphygmomanometer: An Uncommon Suicide.

Suicide by asphyxia is quite a common event in forensic practice and may be implemented in different ways. The authors report a unique case of a 16-year-old youth who committed suicide by means of a standard mercury sphygmomanometer. This manner of suicide has never been described in the literature reviewed. A complete forensic investigation led to the conclusion that the cause of death was mechanical asphyxia, ascribed to self-strangulation by means of an atypical item. The victim suffered from attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) syndrome and was assisted by support teachers. He h
