The Latarjet procedure is a successful treatment for anterior shoulder instability, with fewer than 5% of patients having redislocations-revision surgery and prior surgery having been shown to be significant risk factors for recurrence. Approximately 90% of athletes return to play after the Latarjet procedure, comparable to arthroscopic Bankart repair. Patients may be physically unable to return to play, which may be due to persistent pain, apprehension, or weakness. Pain may be common after the Latarjet procedure and may be attributable to issues with hardware or graft placement, and it may b

BACKGROUND: Chronic nonbacterial osteomyelitis (CNO) is an auto-inflammatory bone disease that usually develops in childhood. Spinal involvement is a common manifestation of CNO, but it is rare for CNO to lead to rapid progression of scoliosis deformity. Here we present a 9-year-old girl with acute scoliosis with CNO and scoliosis progressed rapidly in 2 months.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 9-year-old girl presented bilateral shoulder inequality with pain in the left hypochondrium for 2 months. Standing spinal x-rays showed right convex scoliosis with a 25° Cobb angle. Chest magnetic resonance imagin

Despite widely varying techniques, coracoclavicular (CC) stabilization after traumatic, unstable acromioclavicular (AC) joint dislocations shows notable rates of perioperative complications, radiographic loosening, and, ultimately, loss of anatomic reduction. Loss of reduction can occur in upward of 40% of cases after CC repair or reconstruction. Complications and unplanned reoperations can approach 30% and 1.2% to 5.4%, respectively. While we posit that AC joint congruity confers greater shoulder function, anatomic reduction does not always correlate with patient satisfaction or favorable out

Isolated distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) dislocations are referred to as dorsal or volar of neglected isolated volar DRUJ dislocation which was detected at the second dislocations concerning the position of the ulnar head in relationship to the radius. In contrast to large joint dislocations such as a shoulder dislocation, the clinical picture may mimic a simple soft tissue injury and the dislocation may be missed. In this article, we aimed to present a case presentation to the emergency department. Our patient who had no complaint other than wrist pain was diagnosed with volar dislocation on l

BACKGROUND: Cervical disc replacement (CDR) is an increasingly used alternative to fusion for symptomatic cervical disc disease. While more studies have suggested favorability of CDR over fusion procedures, limited data exist regarding implant fatigability. Here, the authors present a unique and previously unreported failure of the M6-C prosthesis causing spinal cord injury.
OBSERVATIONS: A 49-year-old female with history of cervical degenerative disease and prior C4-7 M6-C arthroplasty presented 9 years later after a minor fall from standing. She endorsed bilateral hand numbness ascending to

BACKGROUND: Parsonage Turner syndrome is an uncommon condition characterized by acute onset shoulder pain, followed by neurologic deficits such as weakness and paresthesia. It is a condition that is thought to be immune-mediated, and triggered by several recognized factors such as trauma, surgery, infections, and immunizations. Upper extremity Parsonage Turner syndrome may affect any distribution of the brachial plexus and most commonly presents unilaterally. Clinical history and examination are the basis of diagnosis, although electrodiagnostic studies may be important for confirmation. Magne

INTRODUCTION: The QuickDASH is a valid and reliable outcome measure widely used to assess the function and pain in arm, shoulder, and hand disabilities. A recent study introduced a QuickDASH 80% cut point test to gauge patients at risk of poor outcomes. However, the utility of this test has not been validated.
PURPOSE: To determine typical QuickDASH scores for three upper limb conditions and to test the sensitivity and specificity of the QuickDASH 80% cut point test in predicting patients at risk of poor outcomes.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study with a total of 406 patient records for

BACKGROUND: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) occurs due to different pathophysiological mechanisms. Presently there is no description of definitive treatment that can resolve the especially recalcitrant motor issues of disability in CRPS type 1 (CRPS-1).
CASE REPORT: We have herein described the successful management of motor disability with a multimodal approach in a patient with CRPS-1 that occurred as a result of a fracture sustained in the lower end of the radius. Sensory/sudomotor/vasomotor symptoms were relieved completely by medications and stellate ganglion block in 2 weeks. Ultr

BACKGROUND: Fetal macrosomia, defined as a birth weight ≥ 4,000 g, may affect 12% of newborns of normal women and 15-45% of newborns of women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The increased risk of macrosomia in GDM is mainly due to the increased insulin resistance of the mother. In GDM, a higher amount of blood glucose passes through the placenta into the fetal circulation. As a result, extra glucose in the fetus is stored as body fat causing macrosomia, which is also called 'large for gestational age'. This paper reviews studies that explored the impact of GDM and fetal macrosomia as

The author reports the case of a 36 year old man with cervical cord injury in whom autonomic dysreflexia developed into intracerebral hemorrhage during inpatient rehabilitation. This patient showed complete quadriplegia (motor below C6 and sensory below C7) due to fracture of the 6th cervical vertebra. An indwelling urethral catheter had been inserted into the bladder for 3 months, diminishing bladder expansiveness. Bladder capacity decreased to 200 ml and the patient frequently experienced headaches whenever his bladder was full.To obtain smoother urine flow, a supra-pubic cystostomy was perf

STUDY DESIGN: An experimental anatomic study performed on elderly cadaveric skulls.
OBJECTIVES: (1) To determine the pin penetration depths in outer table of skull at different torques in the elderly population during halo pin insertion and (2) to validate a safe range of torque for use in this population.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The elderly are at an increased risk of falls, which can lead to cervical fractures. The halo pins used to stabilize these injuries present unique problems in this population owing to osteoporosis, and intracranial pin penetration should always be avoided.

In artificial prosthetics for knee, hip, finger or shoulder joints, ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) is a significant material. Several attempts to reduce the wear rate of UHMW-PE, i.e. the application of suitable coatings, are in progress. A surface modification of polyethylene with wear-resistant hydrogenated diamond-like carbon is favourable, owing to the chemical similarity of polyethylene (-C-H(2)-)(n) and C:H or amorphous C:H (a-C:H) coatings with diamond-like properties. In the present study, the microstructure of a-C:H coatings on UHMW-PE substrates was investigated by

An inner amputation of the upper extremity is understood to be a rupture of the arm's vascular nerve bundle as well as the shoulder's and scapular's stabilizing muscles and fibrous joints without damage to the dermal soft tissue sheath. This injury is a rare and grave incident which mostly occurs within the scope of a high-energy trauma and in cases of polytraumatized patients in combination with additional life-threatening injuries. In the literature this is referred to by the terms scapulothoracic dissociation (SD) and closed forequarter amputation--the entity of SD was first described by Or

UNLABELLED: Metastatic bone disease of the humerus may require surgery for treatment of an impending or existing pathologic fracture or for alleviating disabling pain. Prompt restoration of function is a main goal of surgery, although published results do not reveal if that goal is being met. We retrospectively reviewed range of motion and function of 59 patients operated on from 1986-2003 for those indications. After resection, tumors around the humeral head and condyles (n = 20) were reconstructed with a prosthesis, and tumors at the humeral diaphysis (n = 39) were reconstructed with cemente
