The rhythm of decline: Circadian disruption in neurodegeneration.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with a multifactorial etiology involving genetic, environmental, and metabolic factors. Among these, circadian rhythm disruption has emerged as a crucial but under-explored contributor to disease progression. The circadian system, regulated by the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), controls essential physiological functions such as the sleep-wake cycle, metabolism, and neuroendocrine signaling. Disruption of this system has been increasingly linked to key pathological features of AD, including amyloid-beta accumulation, tau hyper

The Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and the Metabolic Syndrome: A Possible Chronobiotic-Cytoprotective Adjuvant Therapy.

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a highly frequent reproductive-endocrine disorder affecting up to 8-10% of women worldwide at reproductive age. Although its etiology is not fully understood, evidence suggests that insulin resistance, with or without compensatory hyperinsulinemia, and hyperandrogenism are very common features of the polycystic ovary syndrome phenotype. Dysfunctional white adipose tissue has been identified as a major contributing factor for insulin resistance in polycystic ovary syndrome. Environmental (e.g., chronodisruption) and genetic/epigenetic factors may also play relevant

Dynamic relationship and pleiotropic loci of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder with sleep traits.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder modulated by genetic and environmental factors. Approximately 20-55% of individuals with ADHD experience concurrent sleep disturbances, yet the dynamic relationship between the two and their shared genetic mechanisms remain unclear. This study analyzed 11,288 participants (52.1% male) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study using the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children. We found a robust positive correlation between ADHD and sleep traits, though ADHD medication weakened this relationship. Lat

Non-invasive brain stimulation for the treatment of sleep disorders in psychiatric conditions-systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep disturbances are highly prevalent among individuals with psychiatric conditions and significantly impair cognitive, emotional and behavioural functioning. Pharmacotherapy for sleep disturbances carries a risk of dependence and adverse effects, while behavioural therapies are often insufficient. Therefore, there is an urgent need for novel interventions. Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques, including repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, transcranial electrical stimulation and electroconvulsive therapy, have shown potential in modulating neural circuits

Gender differences in the relationship between obsessive-compulsive symptoms and suicide risk among psychiatric outpatient adolescents: the role of depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and sleep disturbances.

BACKGROUND: Suicide has become one of the leading causes of death among adolescents, with an increased risk observed in the psychiatric outpatient population. Therefore, exploring its risk factors is crucial. Obsessive-compulsive symptoms, being common in this patient group, warrant investigation into their impact mechanisms on suicide risk. METHODS: This study enrolled 526 outpatient adolescents [396 females (75.29%); Mage = 15.39, SD = 1.23] who completed relevant questionnaires and provided demographic data during their clinic visit. RESULTS: Obsessive-compulsive symptoms positively predi

[Our visit in the Czech National Institute of Mental Health - experiences and impressions].

In late April 2024, we visited the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) with our psychiatry residency class in Klecany, near Prague, the Czech Republic. There is no similar institution in Hungary, so it was worthwhile to learn not only about the research being conducted there, but also how the successful integration of preclinical and clinical research, patient care, and education is achieved in a psychiatric institute. In this article, we briefly describe the history and professional profile of the institute, its capacities, and the work of the research groups and departments that were

The Effect of Concussion Mechanism of Injury on Sleep Problems in Active Duty Service Members Following Deployment.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep disruption is pervasive in the military and is generally exacerbated during deployment, partially due to increases in operational tempo and exposure to stressors and/or trauma. In particular, sleep disruption is a commonly reported symptom following deployment-related traumatic brain injury (TBI), though less is known about the prevalence of sleep disturbance as a function of whether the TBI was induced by high-level blast (HLB) or direct impact to the head. TBI assessment, treatment, and prognosis are further complicated by comorbidity with posttraumatic stress disorder (P

Circadian Rhythms and Sleep Disorders Associated to Major Depressive Disorder: Pathophysiology and Therapeutic Opportunities.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a complex mood disorder. While much progress has been made in understanding the pathophysiology of MDD, no single mechanism can explain all facets of this disorder. Several studies show that disturbances in biological rhythms can lead to the development of MDD. Indeed, insomnia or hypersomnia are symptoms included in the MDD diagnostic criteria. Clinical studies and meta-analyses showed a strong relationship between MDD and sleep disorders. Sleep disorder and MDD are associated with activation in the hypothalamicpituitary- adrenal (HPA) axis and inflammation.
