Effect of multidimensional perioperative factors on postoperative delayed neurocognitive recovery in elderly patients undergoing single-port video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy: A prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Delayed neurocognitive recovery (DNR) is a frequent postoperative complication in elderly patients, yet predictors in single-port video-assisted thoracoscopic (SP-VATS) lobectomy remain unclear, especially regarding psychosocial and frailty factors. We aimed to identify comprehensive preoperative and intraoperative predictors of DNR in this population. METHODS: This prospective study enrolled 309 patients aged ≥60 years undergoing SP-VATS lobectomy. Preoperative psychological status (anxiety, depression, sleep quality), physiological condition (frailty, oral health), and social sup

Frailty and social, clinical and computed tomography imaging factors in COPD: a multicentre study.

BACKGROUND: Frailty often coexists in patients with COPD regardless of disease severity and may serve as a treatable trait. We hypothesised that factors associated with frailty may differ by COPD severity. This study aimed to comprehensively explore related factors including symptoms, physical activity, dietary behaviour, serum biomarkers and computed tomography (CT) parameters. METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis of a multicentre prospective cohort study included patients with COPD aged ≥50 years with a smoking history ≥10 pack-years. Frailty was assessed using the Kihon checklist. Data w

Patient experiences of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) in China: a multicentre qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic progressive lung disease that profoundly impacts patients' daily lives. While pharmacological therapies continue to advance, less is known about how patients experience the burden of disease across different periods after IPF diagnosis, resulting in a lack of evidence for the development and optimisation of patient-centred intervention strategies. Therefore, this study aimed to explore how individuals with IPF experience the disease and its impact on daily life in China. METHODS: This multicentre qualitative study was conducted usin

Post-traumatic stress disorder in patients with unintentional acute poisoning and its influencing factors.

INTRODUCTION: The population of patients with unintentional acute poisoning is large, yet clinicians pay relatively little attention to the psychological state of this group. This study aimed to investigate the current status of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and its main influencing factors in patients with unintentional acute poisoning and provide data support and a theoretical basis for the prevention of PTSD and reduction of its incidence in this population. METHODS: Convenience sampling was used to select 312 patients with unintentional acute poisoning who were admitted to a terti

Early life predictors of subjective cognitive function in older age: Emerging longitudinal associations over six decades.

OBJECTIVES: Self-rated memory impairment is common in older age and has been related to objective cognitive decline and dementia. Recently, there has been growing interest in early-life predictors of late-life cognition, but research has been limited due to the absence of data spanning the entire lifespan. The present study investigated whether psychological health, social well-being, socioeconomic status (SES), and cognitive abilities at age 10 and 13 predicted subjective memory almost six decades later. METHODS: Psychological health, social well-being, SES, and cognitive abilities were meas

University student mental health before and after implementation of a mental health strategy: a repeated cross-sectional study from Australia.

Studies have consistently indicated that university students are at risk of experiencing poor mental health. This study analysed survey waves at an Australian university in 2019 and 2022 preceding and following implementation of a student mental health strategy to evaluate progress on supporting student mental health. Key indicators for mental health and wellbeing; diversity and inclusion; and risk and protective factors for psychological distress were assessed. Regression analyses examined change between survey waves and risk and protective factors within waves. For mental health measures, th

Impact of nonunion on patient-related outcomes after single level minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion for lumbar degenerative disease: A propensity score-matched analysis.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of nonunion on patient-reported outcomes (PROs) following transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF). As the influence of fusion status on clinical outcomes remains controversial, we conducted a retrospective analysis using propensity score matching to adjust for potential confounders affecting postoperative outcomes in nonunion cases. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 415 patients who underwent single-level TLIF for lumbar degenerative disease (LDD) with a minimum 2-year follow-up. Patients were categorized into nonunion (N, n = 119) and

Timing of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Treatment Based on Social Deprivation.

INTRODUCTION: This study sought to investigate the impact of the area deprivation index (ADI) on the treatment timeline from carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) to carpal tunnel release (CTR). We hypothesize that increased social deprivation will correlate with increased time between care milestones from presentation to surgery. METHODS: This is a retrospective review of patients diagnosed with CTS who underwent CTR at a single academic institution. Variables including gender, race, ethnicity, smoking status, medical comorbidities, ADI, timing of visits and surgery, and electrodiagnostic (EDX) studi

A cross-sectional study of stigma towards opioid users among rural law enforcement and community members in tennessee.

BACKGROUND: The U.S. opioid crisis, resulting in nearly 500,000 deaths from 1999 to 2019, has been exacerbated by persistent stigma, which hinders treatment and recovery efforts. This stigma, whether structural, social, or self-imposed, challenges overdose prevention and recovery. Our study aimed to assess and compare levels of stigma towards opioid users among rural law enforcement officers (LEOs) and community members in Tennessee, highlighting rural community-level attitudes. METHODS: Methods involved surveying two groups: LEOs (N=48) and community members (N=393). Utilizing a Likert Scale
