Family polyvictimization in households with parental health conditions: a cross-sectional study of disparities and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Families with parents with health conditions often experience socioeconomic hardship, caregiving strain, and elevated exposure to family violence. However, differences in family polyvictimization (FPV) between these families and those without health conditions remain underexplored. This study examined disparities in FPV exposure and associated family-level risk factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional household survey was conducted with 1,400 Hong Kong families with children under 18. Measures included FPV (FPV Screen), social support (MSPSS), family hierarchy (PRP), health (SF-12v2, P…

Suicide risk in trans populations: An application of minority stress theory.

Drawing on minority stress theory, the present study tested the relations of minority stressors (i.e., experiences of prejudice and discrimination, internalized antitrans attitudes, fear of antitrans stigma), social support (i.e., friend, family, and significant other support), and substance use (i.e., drug and alcohol use) with depression and suicide risk in a sample of trans individuals. Depression was examined as a mediator of the relations of minority stressors and social support with suicide risk; drug and alcohol use were examined as direct correlates of suicide risk. Participants were 3…

Solidarity, support and competition among communities of female and male sex workers in Mombasa, Kenya.

Female and male sex workers are at elevated risk for HIV infection, psychological distress and other adverse health outcomes. It is therefore important to understand how sex workers' social relationships with one another might inform psychosocial support services for this population. We conducted semi-structured interviews to examine the formation and nature of social networks of 25 female and 25 male sex workers recruited from bars and clubs in Mombasa, Kenya. Relationships between and among female and male participants were often formed based on a mutual understanding of the challenging natu…

Social intelligence in the normal and autistic brain: an fMRI study.

There is increasing support for the existence of 'social intelligence' [Humphrey (1984) Consciousness Regained], independent of general intelligence. Brothers et al. 1990) J. Cog. Neurosci., 4, 107-118] proposed a network of neural regions that comprise the 'social brain': the orbito-frontal cortex (OFC), superior temporal gyrus (STG) and amygdala. We tested Brothers' theory by examining both normal subjects as well as patients with high-functioning autism or Asperger syndrome (AS), who are well known to have deficits in social intelligence, and perhaps deficits in amygdala function [Bauman &

A longitudinal study of partner support and maternal mental health following pregnancy during public health crises.

BACKGROUND: Public health crises like environmental disasters and COVID-19 place psychological burden on affected communities, with pregnant and new mothers disproportionately impacted. With the escalating incidence of such crises, understanding the mechanisms that support maternal resilience is crucial for effective intervention. METHOD: We investigated partner support as a potential protective factor for mothers' mental health following the Australian 2019-2020 bushfires and COVID-19 pandemic. Data were from 278 mothers living in the ACT and NSW who were pregnant during the bushfires and pa

Heterogeneity among exercise participants: latent profile analysis and differential persistence pathways based on the pressure-support-motivation (PSM) framework.

BACKGROUND: Early dropout remains a major challenge in exercise adherence. Most existing studies adopt variable-centered approaches that overlook individual heterogeneity in psychological resources. This study aimed to identify distinct latent profiles of exercise participants and examine how the relationships between appearance anxiety, social support, and motivational resources with exercise persistence differ across profiles. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 625 Chinese adults aged 18-45 who exercised at least once per week. Integrating Objectified Body Consciousness T…

Community-based care of children affected by AIDS in Swaziland: a gender-aware analysis.

BACKGROUND: Care of children affected by AIDS in Swaziland is predominately provided by families, with support from 'community-based responses'. This approach is consistent with United Nations International Children's Fund's (UNICEF) framework for the protection, care and support of children affected by AIDS. However, the framework relies heavily on voluntary caregiving which is highly gendered. It pays limited attention to caregivers' well-being or sustainable community development which enables more effective caregiving. As a result, the framework is incompatible with the social justice prin

Those impacts can include post-traumatic stress disorder, disrupted social relationships, and decreased professional efficacy. This paper examines the emotional, social, and professional experiences of nurses participating in the Israeli Defence Forces’ (IDF) 2023 humanitarian ope
