Visual hallucinations associated with varenicline: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Varenicline is widely used for smoking cessation. It has shown efficacy over placebo and bupropion in manufacturer-sponsored trials. Those with mental illness were excluded from these trials. There are case reports of exacerbation of mental illness and development of psychiatric symptoms with varenicline use. CASE PRESENTATION: A 61-year-old male Caucasian being treated for post-traumatic stress disorder, depression not otherwise specified and alcohol dependence, was prescribed varenicline while he was in a post-traumatic stress disorder/alcohol dual diagnosis treatment program.

EMDR beyond PTSD: A Systematic Literature Review.

Background: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapeutic approach that has demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) through several randomized controlled trials (RCT). Solid evidence shows that traumatic events can contribute to the onset of severe mental disorders and can worsen their prognosis. The aim of this systematic review is to summarize the most important findings from RCT conducted in the treatment of comorbid traumatic events in psychosis, bipolar disorder, unipolar depression, anxiety disorders, substance use dis

Training community providers in prolonged exposure: outcomes of a French consultation programme.

Background: Prolonged Exposure (PE) is a first-line treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), yet its availability remains limited in France. To address this gap, a PE training programme was developed to build capacity among community mental health providers. Objectives: This study aims to examine the implementation of PE, changes in therapists' misconceptions, comfort about PTSD and knowledge regarding exposure therapy following training and to identify predictors of PE use at follow-up in a French sample.Method: Twelve 3-day PE trainings were delivered to a total of N = 200 clinicia

The role of psychological inflexibility on post-traumatic stress symptoms among COVID-19 survivors.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 outbreak spread rapidly around the world, causing a pandemic and negatively affecting the mental health of society. During this process, one of the most mentally affected groups has been patients who contracted COVID-19. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is reported to be an important public health problem after pandemics. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between psychological inflexibility, which is thought to underlie mental problems and PTSD symptoms in Covid-19 survivors. METHODS: A total of 194 patients over 18 years old who were admitt

The impact of racist events on post-trauma mental health symptoms among immigrants and refugees in Canada: the role of racial trauma.

Background: Immigrants and refugees are at greater risk of mental health symptoms, including elevated symptoms of depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). For racialized immigrants and refugees, frequent exposure to racist events is one of several predictors of mental health outcomes. According to race-based traumatic stress theory, repeated exposure to racist events can undermine safety, belonging, and dignity, and may lead to racial trauma, referring to the psychological and physiological stress responses arising from such experiences. However, it remains unknown whethe

Latent typologies of posttraumatic stress disorder amongst first responders: a comparison to combat veterans.

First responders and veterans are disproportionately affected by posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Findings from the extant literature suggest that there may be distinct subtypes of PTSD, and that differences in occupations and the types of traumas experienced may be related to different symptom presentations. As such, the present study used latent profile analysis to identify latent subtypes of PTSD in a carefully diagnosed sample of veterans and first responders. In doing so, we identified a four-profile solution: Cognitive Distress (26.9 %), Anhedonic Avoidance (33.2 %), Ruminative Arou

Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors Do Not Influence Veterans' Alcohol Use Disorder or Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Recovery Trajectories in a Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB) are elevated among individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The highest STB prevalences occur among those with comorbid AUD-PTSD. STB interferes with AUD and PTSD recovery outcomes. However, no research has examined the impact of STB on recovery trajectories among those with dual AUD-PTSD, a comorbidity with a chronic and difficult-to-treat clinical profile. METHOD: Data from a randomized controlled trial with 141 (84.4% male) treatment-seeking Veterans with comorbid AUD-PTSD were used to compare the

Associations between PTSD symptoms and heavy drinking and aggression among treatment-seeking veterans.

OBJECTIVE: Aggression is common among military veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) and is associated with psychosocial impairment. This study examined the associations between within-person changes in PTSD and heavy drinking over the course of treatment and reports of psychological and physical aggression in a sample of treatment-seeking veterans. METHOD: This is a secondary analysis of 141 veterans with co-occurring PTSD and AUD enrolled in a 12-week randomized controlled trial examining doxazosin. RESULTS: Examination of time-varying covariatio

Effects of late-life captivity: preliminary findings following the 7 October attack.

Background: Posttraumatic responses (PTR, i.e. posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD], complex PTSD, prolonged grief, depression, and anxiety) have not been examined following late-life captivity. Most of the captivity literature focuses on young prisoners of war and, to a lesser extent, on younger civilians. Objective: To assess PTR levels in older ex-captives and potential risk factors for elevated PTR following late-life captivity. Methods: We assessed 26 Jewish Israeli older adults (mean age = 82.11±7.23, from Kibbutzim [rural close-knit agricultural communities] in the Gaza envelope) who were

Rapid Reduction in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Severity after Three Fascial Counterstrain Manual Treatments: A Proof-of-Concept Study.

INTRODUCTION: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and elevated levels of central and peripheral pro-inflammatory biomarkers. Fascial Counterstrain (FCS) is a manual therapy technique purported to reduce inflammation and neuroexcitation by decreasing the concentration of pro-inflammatory mediators in the interstitial tissues. We hypothesized that a short course of FCS treatment that specifically targets the interstitium surrounding the SNS will result in a decrease in the severity of PTSD symptoms. MATERIALS AND METHODS:

The impact of multiple traumatic events on habituation during exposure therapy in active-duty military and combat veterans.

Exposure therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is efficacious for treating patients with multiple traumatic events. However, individuals with PTSD with exposure to multiple traumatic events are theorized to experience differences in emotional reactivity and fear extinction processes compared to those exposed to a single traumatic event. Thus, there is concern that individuals exposed to multiple traumatic events respond to exposure therapy differently than individuals reporting a single traumatic event. This study examined the impact of trauma frequency on exposure therapy processes

Psychopharmacology for Trauma-Exposed Youth.

Trauma exposure in children and adolescents is a significant public health concern due to its profound impact on mental health and development. This study explores the complexities of trauma in youth, including the differentiation between trauma exposure and posttraumatic stress disorder, and the long-term effects of adverse childhood experiences. The study discusses the risks and benefits of polypharmacy in treating complex trauma and comorbid conditions in youth. Given the current gaps in research, the study emphasizes the need for comprehensive, individualized treatment plans that integrate

Client and therapist experiences with the Processing of Positive Memories Technique (PPMT) in a randomized controlled trial: insights for protocol refinement.

Background: The Processing of Positive Memories Technique (PPMT) is a brief, memory-based intervention designed to enhance access to detailed positive autobiographical memories (AMs) in individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although research suggests that PPMT is feasible and may reduce PTSD symptoms, little is known about client and therapist experiences with PPMT when delivered to individuals with diagnostic PTSD.Objective: In a pilot randomised controlled trial, PPMT was compared to Supportive Counseling. Seventy clients with PTSD were randomised in a 1:1 ratio to receive f

Physical disorders and neuroendocrine vulnerability in the development of posttraumatic stress disorder: A 2-year injury cohort study.

This study examined whether the association between early post-trauma cortisol levels and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) onset is moderated by the burden of preexisting physical disorders (PDs), with attention to earlier- versus delayed-onset PTSD. Given evidence that earlier-onset and delayed-onset PTSD may involve distinct temporal and pathophysiological mechanisms, we hypothesized that cortisol and number of PDs would more strongly predict earlier-onset PTSD. Data were drawn from a prospective cohort of 895 adults hospitalized for traumatic injuries. Morning serum cortisol was measure

Evaluating a family-centered care intervention for reducing post-traumatic stress and aggression among parents of infants with congenital anomalies: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The NICU admission of an infant with a congenital anomaly is a major source of parental psychological distress. Family-Centered Care (FCC) is a supportive approach hypothesized to mitigate this distress. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured FCC intervention on reducing post-traumatic stress (PTSD) and aggression among parents of these infants. MATERIAL AND METHOD: This prospective, multicenter, assessor-blind randomized controlled trial included 74 parents with clinically significant baseline PTSD symptoms. Participants were randomly assigned to either the

Weathering the Storm Together: Therapists' Experiences Treating War Trauma Survivors While Managing Their Own Concurrent Trauma.

Mental health therapists (MHTs) providing care during shared traumatic reality face distinct emotional and professional challenges, particularly when they are also personally affected. While a central concern is compassion fatigue, emotional exhaustion that arises from prolonged exposure to others' trauma, this concept does not capture the dual nature of the MHT's traumatic experience, both as a citizen of the region and as a helping professional exposed to the traumatic narratives of their clients. This study explores the shared traumatic reality experiences of MHTs working in a war zone, off

The impact of psychological trauma on weight loss, psychosocial functioning, and psychopathology in bariatric and metabolic surgery candidates: a systematic review.

Up to 22% of bariatric and metabolic surgery (BMS) candidates experience trauma or stressor-related symptoms and/or diagnoses (trauma-related distress), such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), yet research assessing their impact on surgical outcomes remains limited. To our knowledge, this is the first systematic review examining how presurgical trauma-related distress affects postsurgical BMS outcomes. Five electronic databases and five grey literature sources were searched from inception to April 2025 for quantitative studies of adults undergoing BMS with current symptoms or diagnoses

Despite the obstacles: consistent treatment effects for traumatized refugees regardless of asylum status change.

Background: The prevalence of mental disorders is high among refugees and asylum seekers due to past traumatic experiences and post-migration stressors, such as uncertain asylum status. Specialized psychosocial treatment centers aim to address this complex interplay between clinical symptoms and social stressors. Thus far, evidence for the effectiveness of such multidisciplinary treatment approaches is mixed, and the influence of post-migration stressors like asylum status changes over the course of treatment has not yet been thoroughly investigated. Objective: The present study aimed to evalua

Understanding the interplay of social context and physiology on psychological outcomes in trauma-exposed adolescents: a protocol and baseline data report.

Background: Adolescence is a period of increased risk for trauma, with a subset of adolescents developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Research has explored the interplay of biology (e.g. heart rate, skin conductance) and social context as critical influences in the early development of PTSD. Prior research is limited, however, by assessments at discrete points and reliance on self-report. Research is needed to model the dynamic interplay of social context and biology.Method: We have developed an integrated ecological method for characterizing biosocial processes using: (1) wristband
